FISH BITES The Marlins open a seven-game homestand with the first of four games against the Atlanta Braves tonight at 7:10 p.m. LHP Caleb Smith, making his eighth start of the season, is facing the Braves for the first time in his career. Atlanta is countering with Mike Foltynewicz, who in eight career appearances (seven starts) against the Marlins has gone 3-1 with a 4.19 ERA (38.2 ip/18 er). The Marlins returned home last night from a six-game road trip to Cincinnati (2-1) and Chicago (0-3). The series loss to the Cubs snapped a string of four consecutive series wins, the Marlins longest series win streak since taking five straight from August 11-27, 2017. The current homestand will continue with a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers following Monday's off-day. YESTERDAY IN CHICAGO Miami suffered its third sweep of three or more games this season, falling 13-4 to the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs scored the first nine runs of the game through the first three innings, eight of those crossing the plate in the third inning. Miami cracked the scoreboard in the fourth when a Justin Bour groundout scored Brian Anderson, who led off the inning with a triple. Trailing 12-1 going into the seventh, Miguel Rojas launched a two-out, two-run home run to left field, his fifth of the season, and Bryan Holaday followed in the ninth with a leadoff home run, his first of the season. Wei-Yin Chen was saddled with his second loss, allowing nine runs on seven hits and two walks, with one strikeout, over 3.0 innings. Merandy Gonzalez tossed 3.0 innings of relief, recording the second-most (tied) strikeouts in a relief appearance in Club history with seven. TODAY'S TRANSACTIONS The Marlins today returned from rehab and reinstated Elieser Hernandez from the 10-day disabled list and optioned Merandy Gonzalez to Double-A Jacksonville. In four rehab starts between Single-A Jupiter and Jacksonville, Hernandez posted an 0-1 record and 4.80 ERA (15.0/8) with six walks and 15 strikeouts. Hernandez's first appearance will mark his Major League debut. VS. THE BRAVES The Marlins dropped the 2017 season series, 8-11, despite winning the series in Miami, 5-4. It marked just their third home season series win over Atlanta since 2010. The Marlins have gone 94-110 all-time in South Florida, including a 19-35 mark at Marlins Park. Miami trails the overall series, 174-240. EMERGING ARTIST Caleb Smith has struck out a combined 26 batters over his last three starts, and has 48 on the season. Smith ranks fourth in the National League (seventh in MLB) with a strikeout rate of 33.8% (48/142). He trails Scherzer (40.0), Robbie Ray (36.3), and Corbin (34.5) in the NL.
