The Hoyas showed consistency across the board as all five starters scored in double figures. Junior Marcus Derrickson led the way with team highs of 16 points and nine rebounds. Senior Jonathan Mulmore continued to serve as GU s floor general as he posted his own career highs of 15 points and eight assists. Jessie Govan added 14 points and freshman Jamorko Pickett added 12. Junior Kaleb Johnson added 11 points to round out those who scored in double figures. The Black Bears are 1-5 on the season and coming off a 78-72 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday night. He was named head coach on April 3, 2017 and is the fourth coach in 18 years at Georgetown. The last time the Hoyas started the season with four consecutive wins was in 2014-15. They won their first eight games in the 2010-11 season. LAST TIME OUT Georgetown won its first road game of the season with an 82-76 victory over Richmond University on Saturday night. Georgetown finished with balanced scoring as all five starters scored in double figures. Marcus Derrickson led the team with 16 points on 4-for-10 shooting and a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe as well as a squad-best nine rebounds, while Jonathan Mulmore added a career-high 15 points and tied a career high with eight assists. Jessie Govan chipped in 14 points, while freshman Jamorko Pickett added 12 and Kaleb Johnson provided 11 to round out those in double figures. For the game, the Hoyas shot 53.2 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from 3-point land on 5-for-11 shooting. The Hoyas outrebounded the Spiders, 35-27, for the game. Georgetown held the Spiders to 46.0 percent shooting from the field and its perimeter defense held Richmond to 25.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc. De Monte Buckingham led the Spiders with 28 points and six rebounds and Grant Golden added 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. DOWN THE SHORE Behind a career-high 24 points from junior Kaleb Johnson and double-doubles from classmates Jessie Govan and Marcus Derrickson, the Hoyas defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 83-57, at Capital One Arena on Saturday, November 18. For the second-consecutive game, the Hoyas had five players in double figures. Johnson had a team-best 24 points behind 9-of-13 shooting including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. He added six boards, four assists and a block in 34 minutes. It was Govan s third double-double (23P, 14R) in as many games and the first of the season for Derrickson (14P, 10R). Georgetown shot 51.7 percent from the field and hit 47.4 from 3-point land. The Hoyas outrebounded Maryland Eastern Shore, 48-26, and limited the Hawks to 32.3 percent shooting for the game. IN THE NBA When the National Basketball Association season started, several former Georgetown men s basketball players were on rosters for the season. Former Hoya All-American Otto Porter Jr., the 2013BIG EAST Player of the Year and the No. 3 pick in the NBA Draft (Washington Wizards), began his fifth season as a professional in DC. Another former All-American, Greg Monroe, began his third season with the Milwaukee Bucks and just recently got traded to Phoenix. He started his career with the Detroit Pistons. Former BIG EAST Player of the Year and All-American Jeff Green plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers. PATRICK EWING HEAD COACH FIRST SEASON GEORGETOWN C 85 Georgetown University announced on April 3, 2017 that Patrick Ewing (C 85) was named its new head men s basketball coach. Ewing comes back to Georgetown after serving for 15 years as an assistant head coach in the NBA. He served as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards (2002-03), Houston Rockets (2003-06) and Orlando Magic (2007-12) and most recently as the associate head coach for the Charlotte Hornets. Ewing is recognized as the greatest men s basketball player to ever don the Blue & Gray. He was selected as one of the top 50 players in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. Ewing was a three-time consensus First Team All-America selection (1983, 1984, 1985) on the Hilltop, leading the Hoyas to three NCAA Championship Game appearances and the 1984 National Championship title. He was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1984 NCAA Championships. His play propelled Georgetown into one of the most respected basketball programs in the country. During his illustrious career, Ewing had the opportunity to play for, and coach, alongside some of the great coaches in basketball, including Pat Riley (New York Knicks), Jeff Van Gundy (Knicks, Houston Rockets), Stan Van Gundy (Orlando Magic), Tom Thibodeau (Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves) and Steve Clifford (Charlotte). He was the first pick in the 1985 NBA Draft and went on to earn NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 1986 with the New York Knicks after averaging 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Ewing scored 24,815 points during his 17-year NBA career to go along with 11,607 rebounds. Ewing spent 15 years with the Knicks and made 10-consecutive NBA All-Star appearances. Ewing averaged 21.0 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.45 blocks in 1,183 career games and was a member of the NBA s 50th Anniversary Team. He remains the New York Knicks all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocked shots, steals and field goals made.
