The last time the Hoyas started the season with eight-consecutive wins was the season when they won their first eight games on the slate. LAST TIME OUT Georgetown continued its winning ways on Saturday afternoon as the Hoyas handily defeated the visiting North Carolina A&T Aggies, 83-74, at Capital One Arena. With the win, the Hoyas improved to 8-0 on the season while the Aggies slipped to 5-4. Junior center Jessie Govan recorded his sixth double-double of the season as he led the team with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Govan led a trio of Hoyas in double figures as freshman guard Jamorko Pickett chipped in 12 while junior forward Kaleb Johnson added 10 as well as grabbing five rebounds and blocking three shots. Junior forward Marcus Derrickson chimed in with nine boards to go with eight points, two blocks and one steal. Senior Jonathan Mulmore and graduate student Trey Dickerson paced the offense with five and four assists, respectively. For the game, GU shot 48.4 percent from the floor and hit 73.9 percent of its free throws. The Hoyas outrebounded the Aggies, Georgetown was strong inside with 52 points in the paint as well 19 second-chance points. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-0 on the year and Howard slips to 1-9. Junior center Jessie Govan recorded his fifth double-double of the season in the effort. For the sixth time this season Govan led the Hoyas in scoring, tallying 24 points. Adding 16 rebounds to match his career high, he notched his fifth double-double of the year. Govan was one of three in double figures as classmates Kaleb Johnson added 18 and Marcus Derrickson tallied 16. Derrickson recorded nine boards while Johnson provided eight and both had four assists. For the game, Georgetown shot 45.8 percent from the floor and hit 19-of-23 free throws. The Hoyas outrebounded the Bison, 41-25, and held a strong presence inside with 36 points in the paint to Howard s 18. Named after Hall of Famer, three-time NCAA champion, six-time NBA champion and six-nba MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the yearly award recognizes the top center in Division I men s college basketball. A national committee consisting of top college basketball personnel selected the 20 preseason candidates. Former Hoya All-American Otto Porter Jr., the 2013BIG EAST Player of the Year and the No. 3 pick in the NBA Draft (Washington Wizards), began his fifth season as a professional in DC. Another former All-American, Greg Monroe, began his third season with the Milwaukee Bucks and just recently got traded to Phoenix. He started his career with the Detroit Pistons. 11 PATRICK EWING HEAD COACH FIRST SEASON GEORGETOWN C 85 Georgetown University announced on April 3, 2017 that Patrick Ewing (C 85) was named its new head men s basketball coach. Ewing comes back to Georgetown after serving for 15 years as an assistant head coach in the NBA. He served as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards ( ), Houston Rockets ( ) and Orlando Magic ( ) and most recently as the associate head coach for the Charlotte Hornets. Ewing is recognized as the greatest men s basketball player to ever don the Blue & Gray. He was selected as one of the top 50 players in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Ewing was a three-time consensus First Team All-America selection (1983, 1984, 1985) on the Hilltop, leading the Hoyas to three NCAA Championship Game appearances and the 1984 National Championship title. He was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1984 NCAA Championships. His play propelled Georgetown into one of the most respected basketball programs in the country. During his illustrious career, Ewing had the opportunity to play for, and coach, alongside some of the great coaches in basketball, including Pat Riley (New York Knicks), Jeff Van Gundy (Knicks, Houston Rockets), Stan Van Gundy (Orlando Magic), Tom Thibodeau (Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves) and Steve Clifford (Charlotte). He was the first pick in the 1985 NBA Draft and went on to earn NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 1986 with the New York Knicks after averaging 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Ewing scored 24,815 points during his 17-year NBA career to go along with 11,607 rebounds. Ewing spent 15 years with the Knicks and made 10-consecutive NBA All-Star appearances. Ewing averaged 21.0 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.45 blocks in 1,183 career games and was a member of the NBA s 50th Anniversary Team. He remains the New York Knicks all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocked shots, steals and field goals made. He still stands second all-time in scoring at Georgetown, averaging 15.3 points in 143 games. He is one of only four players in program history to score at least 2,000 points (2,184). Ewing is the all-time leader in total rebounds (1,316), blocked shots (493) and games played (143).
