WALES IN THE EIGHTIES: THE FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL Tuesday, December 15, BBC One Wales, 10.35pm The 80s was a decade when culture, history and heritage were pushed to the forefront in a bid to revitalise Wales as a nation. In 1982 S4C was created and kick-started a vibrant independent production industry in Wales. One of the most successful programmes was animated children s TV show Superted, which saw success outside of Wales too. Some Welsh language activists campaigned against immigration from England and a few took campaigning to a whole new level by burning holiday homes. Mike Peters, frontman of Rhyl band The Alarm, spoke out against the arson campaign fearing it would result in the loss of life. Attitudes towards preserving industrial heritage were also changing. Industrial sites were now seen as part of Wales history as opposed to an eyesore in the landscape. And surfer Linda Sharp from Aberavon was riding the wave of a new sport in south Wales. But surfers were falling ill after competing in Welsh waters so the Surfers Against Sewage campaign decided to take action. Cerys Shore 3
COMING HOME: IWAN THOMAS Friday, December 18, BBC One Wales, 8.30pm European and Commonwealth gold medallist Iwan Thomas has spent his career pushing himself to the limits and in Coming Home he s keen to discover whether competitiveness runs in his family. Iwan grew up listening to his mother talking affectionately about his great-great-grandfather Thomas Thomas. He was a self-made man, an entrepreneur owning several businesses and working as a local politician in Dinmael, north Wales. But according to family legend, Thomas made a fortune from a slate mine he owned somewhere near Bala. Iwan is keen to uncover whether the stories are true and if Thomas did in fact make his money in slate. On his emotional journey into the past, Iwan learns about his three times great-grandfather Griffith Thomas, who worked as a gamekeeper for the Pale estate, where Queen Victoria once stayed while Griffith worked there. He also learns the sad story of his four times great-grandmother Ann, who lost two sons within months of each other - one was just 10 days old. Stephen Morgan 4
