LHS Lancer Band and Guard Band Booster Newsletter November 2004 Director s Notes Dear LHS band students and parents, Congratulations to the band on a great finish to our marching season at ACCs. We moved up from 16th to 13th place (our 2nd-best finish ever), with our guard placing 6th overall. The credit goes to the kids, who were determined to work and improve our performance all the way to the end; their focus and attention to detail this week made me very proud of them. Thanks also to the roadies and chaperones who make the day possible, as well as all the parents and supporters who traveled north to be there for these students. We have a great band family, and it was out in force on Saturday. Thanks everyone for a terrific marching season. Concert Band rehearsals now begin each Tuesday from 2:30-5pm, and our first one will be Tuesday, November 16. These will continue until our winter concert, which is scheduled for December 9 at 7:30pm, then resume after the first of the year. While we re on the subject of concerts, please notice that the jazz ensemble and percussion/concert band concerts in May have been changed to May 4 and 11, respectively, due to graduation schedule changes and May track meets. The color guard will begin rehearsal for their indoor season soon. A calendar should be published by November 22. There is a $50 fee for participation in this extracurricular activity to help cover the cost of costumes, equipment and instructors. The fee is due by December 15 (the same time that 1/2 quota is due for those going on the spring trip). If a guard student has $50 in excess of their needed quota by that time, the funds can be transferred from quota to guard with parent permission. Good luck to Kalin Peterson, Anna Meadors and Grant Piccerillo, who will be auditioning for all-state band on November 20th, and to all of our students auditioning for all-county band on December 1. The choral department will present a cabaret on Thursday, November 18 at LHS. This involves several of our band students, and the students perform popular music in a dessert theater setting. The drama department will present its nontraditional production of A Christmas Carol on December 2, 3, and 4. I hope you ll come out and support these events. Elections from the November Booster Meeting Keith Prather was elected as Band Booster Vice President and Rhonda Lambert as President at the November Booster meeting. With Keith now serving as V.P. there is a vacant executive board position that needs to be filled. This is an elected position. If you are interested in running for this position, please contact Anna Grimes sasasg@adelphia.net or 301-829-9668 by December 5. An election will be held at our December 14 Booster meeting. Nominations will be accepted from the floor prior to the election. Thank You! Thank you to everyone who has helped with the many tasks involved with keeping our Booster organization running. From organizing fundraising, helping to roadie, chaperoning, uniform room work, writing receipts, calculating quota, to working fundraisers, getting your students to practices and events etc., etc. (the list goes on and on!) We have a lot of quiet behind the scenes help that is greatly appreciated. Even 15 minutes of volunteer time is significant and can make a difference. We need to especially thank Mr. Lloyd and all of the assistants and instructors, Mr. Brown, Ms. Boehne, David, and Mo for the countless hours they spend in order for our students to be able to perform. Thanks to our students also for all their efforts! Volunteer Hours Please turn in non-quota earning volunteer hours to Stephanie Ferber CMSteph@aol.com or 301-831-5828. If you roadied or chaperoned for Marching band this season, your hours will be turned in for you by Sam and Rhonda. Happy Thanksgiving! Kevin Lloyd

Fundraisers Subs! If you are new to the Band or have never experienced Sub Night, come see what it s all about! Quota is earned for each adult and student who comes to help (on-thejob training always available!) "Sub Night" begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria (on the Pick-up/Delivery dates posted). The LHS Band has earned a reputation over the years for selling fresh, generous, attractive subs in a timely manner. We need everyone s continued cooperation to maintain that tradition. Sub Orders are due in the band room on October 11 th by 3:30pm or via e-mail by October 12 th to lhssuborders@hotmail.com by 4:00pm. Delivery is October 20 th by 7:00pm. Fed Ex Field We have an opportunity to work at Fed Ex Field as a fundraiser. Dates are listed below. Our responsibility is maintaining the condiment stands on the club level (the club level is climate controlled). We don't sell any concessions, therefore do not have to be concerned with handling money or alcohol. For each individual that works, you will earn $8.00 an hour towards quota or approximately $80.00 per person per game. Plus you will be fed! Please keep in mind that we are being paid to do a job. Therefore, you may be able to catch glimpses, but will not be able to watch the game or tour the stadium. We will then send a confirmation with dress code requirements and directions to the employee lot. If anyone is interested, we will try to set up car pools. The following dates are available: November 14 th December 12 th (night game, adults desperately needed) January 2 nd Contact Keith or Michelle Prather at 301-831-7962 or kgprather@msn.com Dominos Pizza Don t forget to order Dominos Pizza every-other Thursday night! 15% of all orders will be donated to the band. The on-line coupon must be turned in at time of payment, and can be used at New Market or Mount Airy locations, for delivery or carry out. Wine Festivals Linganore Winecellars is looking for a few families to perform tastings at some local stores in Mt. Airy, New Market & Frederick. Contact Al Case at 301-831-9479 if you are interested in helping out. The next wine season will soon be upon us, Al will need people to work next year. However, for those of you who worked this past season, we put in approximately 1,600 hours of service at $5.00 per hour. Linganore Winery Volunteer Appreciation Party The Linganore Winery would like to invite all of the adult band booster volunteers who worked at the wine festivals in 2004 to a night of enjoyment on Saturday November 27 at the winery starting around 7 PM till??? This party is only for the adults who volunteered and you may bring your spouse or significant other. The winery is planning on having food and refreshments and would like to know how many to expect so if you would like to attend please RSVP no later than 11/22 by calling or emailing Al Kase at 301-831- 9479 or arkase@adelphia.net Candy Cases of candy are still available for sale, please contact Niki Koehler @ (301) 831-3890 or by email: NikiD4Life@aol.com. Each pack of candy sells for 50 cents. Half of the earnings from the sales go directly to quota. You must take a whole case. The following is a list candy that is currently available to sell: 2 boxes of Runts, 3 boxes of Gobbstoppers, and 4 boxes of Sweettarts. Candy may not be mixed between cases. Frederick Keys! No a schedule isn t available yet, but keep your eyes open it s only a matter of time before Peg will need help filling in time slots with warm and able bodies! Just an update on last season, the band put in 4,482.5 hours earning a total of $17,571.20. This gave each student who worked $3.90 per hour. Page 2

Fall Fundraisers Delivery of all fundraisers (including Yankee Candles) will be on Sub Night, Wednesday, November 17 from 6-7 pm in the LHS cafeteria. Mrs. Purcell will be available to collect money during Sub Night. All fall fundraiser money is due no later than December 17. Quota for each fundraiser will not be posted to Student's account until all of the Student's money for that fundraiser is turned in. Any questions should be directed to the individual fundraiser chairperson. KIDA Indoor Guard and Percussion Show We will again be hosting a KIDA indoor show on February 5, 2005 (This year it does not conflict with All County Band!). This is a great quota earning opportunity for students and adults. Sign up sheets to work the day of the show will be available at our January 12 sub night and then posted in the band room until all positions are filled. We are in need of some adult help prior to the show to head up and organize our Food Concession Stand (more than one person can work together on this and we will have info. from the former person in charge) and our Non Food Concessions (flowers, etc.). Anna Grimes has been in charge of this previously and will help. You can contact her to for information. Please contact Rhonda Lambert if you can assist with either of these jobs at lamb5to1@hotmail.com or 301-829-2804. Thanks! Refreshment help needed for concerts We are in need of someone (can be more than one) to coordinate refreshments for the December and May concerts. This involves having a table set up in the lobby, making sure there are napkins, cups and ice, and getting a few people to pour soda. Booster members send in 2 liter bottles of soda and individually wrapped cookies, brownies, etc. the evening of the concert. We don t sell the refreshments, but we have a donation jar or basket at the table. Contact Rhonda lamb5to1@hotmail.com or 301-829-2804 if you can help. For the December concert, if your last name begins with A-L, please bring baked goods. If your last name begins with M-Z, please bring two 2 liter bottles of soda. Thanks! Page 3

Financial Information Important Quota Information! We are using a new system for our accounting and will not be posting a large spreadsheet in the band room. We will now be sending an email statement of each person s account status each month. We need each band parent to provide the following information for this new change to take place: Parent Name Student Name Email address Phone number Please indicate if this is a 1st year 2nd year or 2nd semester student Go to www.linganoreband.org/acctform.htm if you haven t already and sign up. Please complete this as soon as possible so we can finish our data base Money Collection and Receipts Mrs. Shiderly will be available to collect funds and issue receipts on the following days through 2004: At the conclusion of the Tuesday evening practices in the band room. Just a few "friendly" reminders from our treasurer... write your child's name in the memo section of each check send a deposit slip along with each payment fill out the deposit slip completely - list ALL fundraisers and the specific amount for each do not turn in forms or orders with the money - your order may not get placed in time do not turn in money with forms or orders - this puts an undue financial responsibility on the fundraiser chairs pay for candy by check or currency - no coins will be accepted double check to make sure that all monies turned in are actually in the envelope... and please seal that envelope understand that I am keeping track of 150+ accounts, paying bills, and keeping records - when emailing or calling, PLEASE BE NICE! Deposit slips are available on-line now! Check out the website at www.linganoreband.org. Just a note: See the band pictures on the website of the Libertytown Parade and Westminster TOB Competition! www.linganoreband.org Sub Nights from 4:30-7 PM in the LHS cafeteria: 11/17 and 12/15. Thursdays, 11/18 & 12/16 during class periods. Money can be taken on other days, but it is most convenient for people to bring in money when Mrs. Shiderly is here so that we don't have to take time from instruction. PLEASE IF AT ALL POSSIBLE MAKE PAYMENT ON DAYS MRS.SHIDERLY IS AT SCHOOL!!!!!! Page 4
