LATEST FROM THE LIBRARY LIBRARY SUPPORTS STUDENT LEARNING This was an exciting month in the LMC as 7th grade teachers Ms. Hottmann (ELA) and Ms. Trumpy (Math) combined their classes in our space for several weeks for morning and afternoon sessions of The Real Game. The project-based lessons in this program simulate real life as students work together and learn important skills such as how to find employment as well as manage their time and finances. This was the first year they used the online materials available through our Career Cruising subscription. Ms. Fuerstenberg and student teacher Ms. Wedig also brought 6th graders to the library this month. The students received a research skills lesson in how to search for non-fiction books, how to use the online versions of World Book Online and the Encyclopedia Britannica, and how to better evaluate websites for their validity and usefulness as a source of information.
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS The local competition teams have been chosen, and students will be strategically making sure that all titles are covered among their members. The students have continued reading and taking online quizzes available through the WEMTA Battle of the Books site together to hone their skills. On January 8th, DMS students will be going to battle against St. Joseph s School in the City Council Chambers below the Dodgeville Public Library at 9 AM for the local competition portion of our battle. Stay tuned to hear the outcome in our next newsletter! CHROMEBOOK CENTRAL STATION Did you know that the LMC is Chromebook Central at DMS? When students have an issue with their devices, they come to the LMC for assistance. We address hardware and software problems, offer a charging station, and lend out Chromebooks if students have forgotten theirs. We encourage students to charge their Chromebooks each night at home and be responsible for remembering their Chromebooks each day. We also work on Chromebook expectations so our students are ready for the responsibility and independence of high school. JANUARY BOOK DISPLAYS Read Em and Weep - Books to Make You Cry Meet the Author - Gary Paulsen Who Was... Dive into this fun biography collection!
