The 7th & 8th graders did a great job. Gold medal : Garrett McGauley Silver medal : Colton James Bronze medals : Zach French, Isaac Olson, McKayla Schroeder, and Nik Swiggum Great job Mathletes! The food was enjoyed by all! TORNADO AND SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK The week of April 8-12 is Wisconsin s Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness week. On Thursday, April 11th a statewide tornado drill is planned. At 1:00 p.m. the National Weather Service will issue a statewide mock tornado watch and at 1:45 p.m. a statewide mock tornado warning. This is an ideal opportunity for schools, businesses and families to practice safe procedures for severe weather.

2 THE GIVING TREE Dodgeville Middle School will be reintroducing The Giving Tree. The Giving Tree is a program where staff request needed items for the classroom. A list of these items will be shared out with the community through an in Infinite Campus and included in future newsletters. This is a great opportunity for families to donate needed items that benefit the students of DMS. These items are greatly appreciated by the staff to sustain a positive learning environment. Ms. Sueflohn is a Middle Childhood/ Early Adolescence Education Major with an English Minor from University of Wisconsin - Platteville. She spent third quarter working in Lancaster with elementary students and is looking forward to working with middle school students to end the school year. LATEST FROM THE LIBRARY APRIL IS NATIONAL SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH! Join the LMC as we celebrate this year s National School Library Month with the theme Everyone Your School Library. Ms. Spady and Ms. Radosevich have fun activities planned for the DMS students. Trivia, contests, games, and prizes. Join us as we share how our LMC empowers our students!

3 PEEPS SHOW AT THE LMC! Get out those delicious morsels of marshmallow and your imagination and submit a literary-themed diorama for our third annual Peeps Show! We ll have a limited number of supplies, boxes, and PEEPs for you to take home and build your creations. Stop in at the LMC and pick up rules and an entry form. You can enter individually or as a team. Dioramas will be displayed in the LMC. Students and staff are encouraged to enter. Entries are due Monday, April 22nd. Winners will be decided by a school-wide vote and will be announced May 1st. STATE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS COMPETITION RESULTS Congratulations to our Wisconsin Middle Level State Battle of the Books team of Alyson Melssen, John Qualley, Owen Tiber, Addison Turner and alternate Gianna Robinson! The result of the competition are finally in, and they came in 31st out of over 144 teams that competed around the state. Great job, team! Students: If you would like to compete next year, be sure to look out the list of titles to be released by WEMTA after June 1st. The list will be available in the DMS LMC and at the Dodgeville Public Library. 6TH GRADE NEWBERY PROJECT We welcomed Ms. Fuerstenberg s class into the LMC for a lesson introducing them to the library s extensive collection of Newbery-award-winning books, from the latest 2019 winners to the original from Students are excited to stretch themselves and read titles that are outside their usual comfort zone, including some classic literature. We look forward to seeing their related personal projects near the end of April! THANK YOU, THANK YOU! The Scholastic Book Fair Was a Success! We are so grateful for the many families who purchased items at the Scholastic Book Fair. We had over $1,000 in final sales. (If you ordered books online, they should be arriving sometime after Spring Break.) We will be using the Scholastic Dollars we earned to buy materials for the DMS LMC as well as new books for teachers classroom libraries. Thank you to parent Paula French for coordinating this year s fair. Also, a HUGE thank-you to the student volunteers from the DHS National Honor Society, who helped us out during the fair! We enjoyed your assistance as well as a chance to connect with students who formerly attended DMS. DID YOU KNOW... that the Library regularly puts together carts of books for use by students for projects and casual reading content-area reading within teachers classroom? This past month, we provided books for Computer Literacy & Careers, Social Studies, and English-Language Arts classes. APRIL BOOK DISPLAYS New Books - We ve got a lot of new books just itching to get out the door! Mysteries, historical fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels. Earth Day - Check out our collection of titles dedicated to conserving our planet. Autism Awareness - April is Autism Awareness Month and we ve picked some awesome books to bring autism awareness closer to our students. Spring Sports - Warmer weather brings spring sports. We ve got a great collection of titles about soccer, baseball, and track. - The Library Ladies, Ms. Spady & Ms. Radosevich

We are reaching out to the student body and staff to assist with selling butter braids. We will be offering a variety of incentives and/or prizes for your involvement. We will be using donations from Pizza Hut, Culver s and McDonalds. sell 1 item and get a small bag of skittles sell 5 items and get a token/coupon for free food or item sell 10 items and get a different token/coupon for free food or item top 3 sellers at DMS will receive a gift card from Walmart top selling grade level will get an extra advisory gym day top selling advisory at each grade level will get a special dessert/treat at lunch The more butter braids we sell, the more projects and activities we can do at DMS and help support other worthy causes in our community! Please consider participating in this worthwhile fundraiser. Some ideas for selling: immediate family, friends, neighbors, parents co-workers, church members, teachers, coaches, 4-H leaders, etc. A reminder that all order forms and money need to be turned into the office no later than Tuesday, April 2nd. If you would like an envelope to collect and keep your money in, please see Mrs. Kamps, Ms Trumpy, or Ms Cullen. The butter braids will be delivered just in time for spring gatherings. Students need to pick up their orders on Tuesday, April 16th after school in the DMS cafeteria. We appreciate all of your consideration and support! UPCOMING EVENTS: April: The Student Leadership Team will sponsor an all-school activity following the conclusion of FORWARD testing (tentative date is Thursday, April 18th). Students will be able to choose between several different activities and will also be able to enjoy some snacks while visiting with fellow students at DMS.

5 Student Leadership members will also be playing bingo with the residents at Crest Ridge on Monday, April 1st, no fooling!! (we had to change from April 15th due to a transportation conflict). May: $1 phone fundraiser for 2 Fridays(May 3 and 10). Students who pay $1 will be able to use their cell phones during lunch. Money raised will be used to purchase flowers, mulch, stepping stones and a light to shine on the flag. Members will be adopting and re-doing the two flower beds in front of DMS and the flower garden across from the water tower. Student Leadership members will be making door decorations with the residents at Crest Ridge on Monday, May 20th. Also see the Love Dodgeville Event below. June: We will be assisting with the Awards program as well as sponsoring the end of year celebration including a dance, games, and snacks. Student Leadership members will be playing bingo at Crest Ridge on Monday June 3rd. LOVE DODGEVILLE EVENT The Student Leadership Team and the Builders Club will be working together on two different community service projects for the 4th annual Love Dodgeville event. We will be making May baskets for Crest Ridge residents and helping with spring clean-up projects at the Arboretum. A BIG thank you to one and all for your support and consideration as we try to make a difference at DMS and in the Dodgeville community!! MUSIC NOTES SOLO AND ENSEMBLE 2019 RESULTS Congratulations to all DMS Band, Choir and Orchestra students who performed on Saturday, March 2 at Solo and Ensemble Festival in Platteville. There were 29 events involving 30 6th-8th Grade Dodgeville Middle School Music Students. DMS students earned 17 Gold Medals, 11 Silver Medals and two participation pins for a comments only performance. All medals will be presented to students at the Music Boosters Awards Night on May 28th at 7:00 p.m. at Dodgeville High School. A special congratulations to Drew P. who earned special recognition for a very difficult Class A Trumpet Solo Event. He received a 1* and is eligible to perform at State Solo and Ensemble on April 27th at UW-Platteville. Alaina L. and Aylin C. performed a Class C vocal duet for (Comments Only). Other events included a Class C vocal trio with Mia B., Alaina L. and Dovy H. (2); Class C instrumental ensembles included Caden Z. & Isaac O., Brass duet (2), Ruth H. and Nik S.; flute & clarinet duet (2) and a percussion ensemble event with Corley J., Irene T., Natalie G., Sierra D. and Hank H. (1) Class C vocal soloists were Rose B. (1); Cooper C. (1) and Chloé J.(1) Class C Instrumental Solos included Morgan O., Flute (2), Brody G., alto saxophone (2), Kyla R. trumpet (2), Alyson M., flute (1), and Carson M. (1) Performing in a more difficult Class B events were vocal soloists, Alyson M. (2), Isaac O. (2), Corley J. (1), Natalie G. (1), McKayla S.(1). Class B Instrumental Soloists included Isaac O, Euphonium (2), Anna G., clarinet (2), Sydney O., alto saxophone (2), Colton J., oboe(1), Garrett M., alto saxophone (1), Zena W., Flute (1), McKayla S.; cello (1); Megan V., cello (1) and Natalie G., piano (1). Class B instrumental ensembles included a Miscellaneous Quintet with Colton J., Drew P., Garrett M., Zach F., and Ben S. (1)

6 MUSIC IN THE PARKS PERFORMANCE TRIP FOR ALL 7TH/8TH GRADE BAND, ORCHESTRA AND CHOIR STUDENTS All music students in 7th/8th Grade should have returned their permission, health forms and fees to the school office if they are planning to travel with the 7th/8th Grade Band and Choir to perform at the Music in the Parks Festival in May. Please contact the school office as soon as possible so that your child will be able to enjoy this great performance opportunity and afternoon at Six Flags Great America Amusement Park in Gurnee, IL! This is an all-day event on Saturday, May 18th. Thank you to all who have agreed to chaperone for this trip! Orchestra students will serve as announcers and help with equipment and will be part of the audience for the performances at the Music in the Parks Festival at Mount Vernon HS in Mount Vernon, IL. CONCERT Congratulations to all Band, Orchestra and Choir students for a fantastic POPS Concert on March 5th! Our spring concerts include all of our bands in the DMS/DHS Band Concert on Monday, May 13th at DHS DMS/DHS Orchestra Concert on Thursday, May 16th in the DMS Cafeteria. DMS/DHS Choir Concert on Monday, May 20th at DHS All concerts begin at 7:00 p.m. with students in spring concert dress-up clothes. No formal looks, but certainly look professional! MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP If your Band, Orchestra or Choir student is looking for some extra summer enrichment opportunities, there are many summer camps and experiences offered at area colleges and in surrounding communities. Be sure and complete a MUSIC BOOSTER SUMMER CAMP SCHOLARSHIP application by May 3rd and return it to the DMS School Office to help offset the extra cost and give your child an opportunity to enjoy these additional learning opportunities! SUMMER BAND All 6th-8th Band Students are expected to register and join us for the 2019 DMS Summer Music Program. Students will be performing as a marching band for the Mineral Point 4th of July Parade, the Dodgeville Farmers Appreciation Parade and also the Ridgeway Labor Day Parade. Colorguard and Drumline have additional rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to learn routine and cadences for the parade. Our current 8th graders are our sections leaders and many DHS students join us for this fun opportunity to begin learning how to march and prepare music that we will continue to play in the Fall of 2019! Summer Jazz Band meets each day after Summer Marching Band practice with a performance on Friday, July 5th. Complete and return a registration form with $8 for your Summer Music T-shirt! Please call to schedule your child for extra summer lessons that are offered weekly between 10:00 and 3:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from June 10th-July 5th. Anyone interested in joining band should sign up for lessons and make plans to attend marching rehearsals to be a part of our 7th/8th Grade Band. SUMMER IS A GREAT TIME TO LEARN! It s never too late to begin learning to play an instrument in a school ensemble. Please contact Mrs. Ellis if your child is interested in learning to play in band or orchestra and would be able to be involved in the DMS Summer Music Program.

7 DMS SUMMER MUSIC 2019 Dates: June 10-July 5 (Last Parade July 7th) Summer Marching Band: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 8:00-9:00 Summer Jazz Band: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:15-10:00 In addition Drumline and Colorguard Clinics: Tuesday & Thursday 8:00-9:00 (June 11, 13, 18 & 20) All DMS band students currently in grades 6-8 should plan to attend the Summer Music Program at Dodgeville Middle School. Members of the drumline and colorguard are required to attend the clinic sessions listed above in addition to marching practices to learn cadences and routines. Any interested DMS and DHS students are invited to participate in the Dodgeville Summer Jazz Band. Community service hours are awarded for HS students helping with the program! Cost of T-shirt is $8 and checks should be made payable to Dodgeville Middle School. All T-shirt orders must be pre-paid. (Please order a T-shirt even if you are unable to attend Summer Band.) Participants in the Summer Music Program have opportunities to earn coupons towards A FINAL prize drawing to be held at a picnic lunch celebration provided by the Music Boosters on Friday, July 5 th here at DMS. Students earn coupons when they Attend rehearsal or clinic (marching band and/or jazz band) Attend a lesson as scheduled with an instructor Practice 1 coupon for 30 minutes of practice March in a parade or perform in a jazz concert. Parades are July 4 th in Mineral Point, and July 7 th in Dodgeville. Students will be learning to play our new fall marching tune. The Jazz Concert will be at 6:00 on Friday, July 5 th in the DMS cafeteria. Students currently in 6 th and 7 th grade should also plan to march on Sunday, September 1st in the Ridgeway Labor Day Parade. Marching Band is a fun summer activity and marching in parades provides a great service to our community! Uniforms for summer music performances include Summer Music T-shirt, solid-color dark shorts of your choice with white tennis shoes/athletic shoes and short white crew socks. Individual lessons on M, W or F will be between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on a first come-first served basis.
