Marlins (Rk) Dominican Summer League (Northwest) 32-23 2nd 5.5 GB Today s Preview: The Grasshoppers (A, Marlins) are back in action after a rain-shortened win against the Power (A, Pirates) at First National Bank Field. Greensboro is sending left-hander Sean Guenther to the mound against West Virginia s Travis MacGregor as the Hoppers look to clinch a series win. The Grasshoppers lineup has experienced a shakeup over the last week with 18 roster moves in the month of August, including the arrival of Miami s top three draft picks from this June. In welcoming many new faces to the dugout, the Grasshoppers recently promoted shortstop Jose Devers and outfielder Tristan Pompey to the Class A-Advanced Jupiter Hammerheads. Hoppers Hurlers: Sean Guenther, 22, makes his fourth start and ninth appearance with the Grasshoppers as he faces a Pirates affiliate for the second time this year. He is coming off a no decision on July 30 at Rome, allowing five runs (three earned)on 10 hits over 6.0 innings while walking none and striking out five. The left-hander has issued only three walks while fanning 22 over 27.2 innings with Greensboro. While Guenther has not faced West Virginia before, he had a strong start April 26 vs. Bradenton (High-A, Pirates) when he tossed 6.0 innings, allowing a run on seven hits in a no decision. He opened this season with Class A-Advanced Jupiter where he went 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA in seven games (seven starts) in the Florida State League. The Marlins selected him in the seventh round of the June 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Notre Dame. He split his debut season between the GCL Marlins and Batavia, going 1-4 with a 3.18 ERA (18 ER/51.0 IP) and 44 strikeouts in 13 games (12 starts). About Last Night: The Grasshoppers dropped five runs in the first to surge past the Power on Tuesday before the game was called due to nearby lightning. Daniel Castano (4-2) worked all 6.0 innings for Greensboro to earn a complete-game win in the storm-shortened contest. He allowed one run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. West Virginia Power starter Sergio Cubilete (3-5) took the loss, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits over 4 and 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three before giving way to reliever Ike Schlabach. In the bottom of the first, Greensboro sent 11 men to the plate while scoring five runs on five hits. Connor Scott, the Marlins first round pick (13th overall) in this June's First-Year Player Draft, and Thomas Jones led off with back-to-back doubles for a quick 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Isael Soto followed with an RBI-single. Chris Torres then drew a 2-out walk before Marcos Rivera reached base on a strikeout-wild pitch that loaded the bases. Will Allen stepped to the plate and slapped a 2-run single to left field for a 4-0 lead, and Ricardo Cespedes followed with an RBI-single to cap the big inning. Allen finished 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI while Soto drove in two runs on a 2-for-3 night. Scott reached base in every plate appearance in his Class A debut, going 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI, two walks, and two runs scored. Fellow top draft picks Osiris Johnson (Second Round, 53rd overall) and Will Banfield (Competitive Balance Round B, 69th overall) also made their Class A debut with Greensboro on Tuesday night. Youth Movement: The Grasshoppers received the Miami Marlins top three draft picks from this June s First Year Player Draft on Tuesday as Connor Scott (First Round, 13th overall), Osiris Johnson (Second Round, 53rd overall), and Will Banfield (Competitive Balance Round B, 69th overall) all made their Class A debut Tuesday against West Virginia. The trio of teenagers are the three youngest members of the Grasshoppers as Scott (18) was born Oct. 8, 1999, Banfield (18) was born Nov. 18, 1999, and Johnson (17) was born Oct. 18, 2000. With his promotion to Greensboro, Orisis Johnson becomes the first player born in the new millennium to suit up for the Grasshoppers. Where there s a Will: Grasshoppers catcher Will Allen put together his third 4-RBI game of the season on Tuesday, going 2-for-3 with a 2-run home run in the 8-1 win over West Virginia in six innings. Allen, who played first base on Tuesday, also slapped a 2-run single in the first inning as Greensboro built an early 5-0 lead. Earlier this season, Allen torched the Hickory Crawdads with eight RBI in three games played, driving in four runs on June 11 and again on June 13 in the second game of a doubleheader. The most RBI by a Grasshopper in a single game this season is five, accomplished by Zach Sullivan and Isael Soto. No-Hitter History: Sunday s no-hitter against Kannapolis is Greensboro s first since April 23, 2012, when Jose Fernandez combined with Gregory Nappo and Kevin Cravey in a 6-0 win over Hickory for the first no-hitter in Grasshoppers history. Prior to that, Greensboro s last no-hitter came during the Bats era, when Jason Vargas spun a 9-inning no-no on Aug. 24, 2004, against the Savannah Sand Gnats. IN THE WEEDS: GRASSHOPPERS NOTES Youth Movement: The Grasshoppers received the Miami Marlins top three draft picks from this June s First Year Player Draft on August 7 as Connor Scott (First Round, 13th overall), Osiris Johnson (Second Round, 53rd overall), and Will Banfield (Competitive Balance Round B, 69th overall) all made their Class A debut Tuesday against West Virginia. No-Hitter History: Greensboro pitchers combined to throw a 7-inning no-hitter in Game 1 of the August 5 doubleheader at Kannapolis in a 2-1 win. Taylor Braley worked 5.0 scoreless, hitless innings, working around two walks while striking out four. Jeremy Ovalle walked two batters and plunked another while recording two outs in the sixth inning, leading to an Intimidators run without the benefit of a hit. Michael Mertz tossed the final 1.1 innings of hitless ball, striking out two and walking two to complete the gem. Kannapolis earned a measure of revenge, scoring a 9-0 win in Game 2. The August 5 no-hitter against Kannapolis is Greensboro s first since April 23, 2012, when Jose Fernandez combined with Gregory Nappo and Kevin Cravey in a 6-0 win over Hickory for the first no-hitter in Grasshoppers history. Prior to that, Greensboro s last no-hitter came during the Bats era, when Jason Vargas spun a 9-inning no-no on Aug. 24, 2004, against the Savannah Sand Gnats. Low-Hit Games: Prior to the August 5 no-hitter in Game 1 of a doubleheader, a Greensboro 2-1 win at Kannapolis, the Grasshoppers had tossed a pair of 1-hit games this season, most recently on July 29 vs. Hickory in a 2-1 win over the Crawdads. On April 16, Greensboro 1-hit Lakewood in a 1-0 win at FirstEnergy Park. Rockin Rogers: Trevor Rogers 12 strikeouts on July 29 set a new season-high by a Grasshoppers pitcher, surpassing the 10 strikeouts by Dustin Beggs on June 12 vs. Hickory in Game 1 of a doubleheader. That day, Beggs fanned 10 over 5.0 innings of work the only other Grasshoppers pitcher with a double-digit strikeout game this season. Rogers also matched the longest outing by a Greensboro pitching in 2018, working 7.2 innings to equal Brady Puckett s 7.2 innings of work on May 5 vs. Greenville. Blanked by Bugs: Greensboro pitching enjoyed its ninth shutout win and its sixth combination shutout of 2018 in a July 27 win, 3-0, over Hickory. Starting pitcher Daniel Castano has now spearheaded three of the Grasshoppers nine shutouts this season. Greensboro is now 9-7 in shutout games this season, tied with Lexington (9-5) for the fourth-most shutouts in the South Atlantic League this season behind Lakewood (20-7), Augusta (11-6), and Delmarva (10-11). With a scoreless first inning on July 28, the Hoppers came within one inning of matching the team s longest scoreless inning streak of the season before giving up a run in the second. The Grasshoppers longest scoreless pitching streak of the season came May 19-21 when the team tossed 19.0 consecutive scoreless innings, including back-to-back shutouts on May 20 in a doubleheader against Lakewood. Thieves in the Night: Greensboro swiped a season-best seven bases July 11 against Kannapolis, two more than the team s previous season-high. The Hoppers stole five on June 11 against Hickory. Six different players stole at least one base with Ricardo Cespedes becoming the sixth Grasshoppers with two stolen bases in a game this season and the first since Garvis Lara and Thomas Jones each stole two bags on June 25 against Kannapolis. In total, Greensboro successfully stole seven bases in nine chances en route to a 6-2 win in the series opener. Base on Balls for Brown: Micah Brown drew a teambest three walks in the July 11 win, 6-2, over Kannapolis, matching the most by a Grasshoppers batter in a game this season. On April 29, Aaron Knapp drew three walks in an extra-inning game at Asheville. Turning Two, Four Times: The Grasshoppers matched the team s high watermark for double plays in the July 11 win over the Intimidators with four twin-killings in the 6-2 victory. All four double plays came in their own unique style. First baseman Micah Brown started a 3-6-3 double play with Jose Devers returning fire in the second inning. The Hoppers turned a traditional 5-4-3 from Marcos Rivera to Garvis Lara to Brown as well as 4-3 two-ball from Lara to Brown. The most unusual double play came in the form of batters interference on a strikeout that obstructed catcher Michael Hernandez s throw to try to pick off a runner at second base. The batter and base runner were both ruled out on the play. The only other 4-double play game Greensboro posted this season came May 3 vs. Hagerstown. Walk This Way: Kannapolis issued 10 walks to Greensboro on July 11, giving the Grasshoppers their most free passes in a game this season. The Hoppers previous high came on April 11 when they drew seven walks at home against Augusta, including six by GreenJackets starting pitcher Garrett Cave. In the game, Intimidators starting pitcher Zach Lewis walked seven batters over 4.1 innings to set a new single-game high by a Hoppers opposing pitcher this season. The Comeback: With Lexington ahead 8-2 after five innings on July 8 -- thanks to three in the second and five in the fifth -- Greensboro rallined in the top of the eighth with a 5-run frame of their own en route to an 11-10 win in 11 innings. Jose Devers, Garvis Lara, and Tristan Pompey led off the frame with three straight base hits to get one run back before Soto belted a 3-run blast to pull the Grasshoppers within two, 8-6. With the basepaths empty and no outs, Tad Ratliff replaced Collin Snider on the mound. Micah Brownsmacked a 1-out double, and Michael Hernandez drove him in with an RBI-single to cut the Legends' lead to one. In the top of the ninth, the Grasshoppers tied the game, 8-8, on Soto's sacrifice-fly to cash Devers. Vincenzo Aiello tossed a scoreless bottom of the ninth to pitch Greensboro into extra innings. The 6-run deficit overcome for a win matches the largest comeback with by Greensboro this season (the Hoppers trailed the Greenville Drive 8-2 through five innings on May 4 before charging back to win 9-8 thanks to a 6-run sixth inning. Silky Soto: Isael Soto's 5-RBI night on July 8 matched the most by a Hoppers hitter in a game this season, tying Zach Sullivan's 5-RBI game on May 9 at Asheville. Soto and Michael Hernandez each finished 3-for-5 to lead the six Hoppers hitters who had a multi-hit day. Extra! Extra!: The Grasshoppers scored an extrainnings win July 8 at Lexington, 11-10 in 11 innings, their first since April 29 at Asheville with an 11-7 victory over the Tourists. Greensboro is now 4-1 in extrainnings games this season with the team s first four extrainning contests all coming during the season s first month. The Hoppers won 10-9 (10) at Hagerstown on April 12, lost 5-4 (10) at Lakewood on April 17, and won 5-4 (10) at Lakewood on April 18 before playing the team s most recent extra-innings game prior to this series with the win at Asheville. Take Your Time: Sunday s game was the longest for the Grasshoppers this season both in terms of the number of innings played (11) and the time of the game (3:54). The team s four previous extra-innings games all finished in 10 innings while the Hoppers longest game of 2018 by time before Sunday came April 29 at Asheville in a 3:28 contest. Sunday s game was Greensboro longest by time since August 5, 2017, when the Grasshoppers needed 4:39 to beat Kannapolis 5-4 in 15 innings. LUCKY 13 Greensboro pitchers matched the team s season-high with 13 strikeouts in back-to-back games against the Crawdads on July 28-29. This marked the eighth and ninth times the Grasshoppers fanned 13 batters in a game in 2018. 4/9 vs. Augusta 5/10 at Asheville 6/5 at Delmarva 6/29 vs. Delmarva 7/5 vs. Lakewood 7/17 vs. Asheville 7/23 at Lakewood 7/28 vs. Hickory 7/29 vs. Hickory STREAKING TO JUPITER Cameron Baranek, who was promoted to Class-A Advanced Jupiter to being the Second Half, finished the first half on a 13-game hitting streak (since June 1) and 21-game on-base streak (since May 24) with Greensboro. Both are the longest by a Hoppers hitter this season. He surpassed an 11-game hitting streak by Jose Devers and a 20-game on-base streak by Jhonny Santos earlier this season. Baranek is batting.420 (21-50) with two home runs, two doubles, and eight RBI over his 13-game hit streak, the longest active streak the SAL and tied for the 10th-longest in 2018. His 21-game on-base streak is the longest by a Grasshopper since James Nelson reached base safely in 37 straight games from April 28-June 9, 2017. RECORD RUNS ALLOWED The June 27 run total against the Shorebirds matched the Grasshoppers franchise record for runs allowed when Greensboro gave up 20 runs for the second time since the team s inaugural 2005 season. The only other 20-run game for a Hoppers opponent came nearly 10 years ago to the day, on June 28, 2008, in a 20-6 loss to Kannapolis. That night, Greensboro allowed 23 hits, one more than the June 27 loss, 20-2, which was a 22-hit night by Delmarva. In the process of June 27 s 20-2 loss, Delmarva set or tied 11 season high marks for offense against Greensboro, including the following: Category 6/27 vs DEL Previous Mark/Last Accomplished Most Runs, Game: 20 14, 5/9 at ASH Most Runs, Inning: 8 (7th) 8, 5/4 vs. GVL (5th) Most Hits, Game: 22 16, 5/3 vs. HAG Most HR, Game: 4 4, 4/28 at ASH Most Doubles, Game: 6 3, 5x, last: 5/30 at LWD Most Triples, Game: 1 1, 13x, last: 6/25 vs. KAN Most Innings with a run: 6 5, 4/28 at ASH Most HR, Game (Indiv.): 2, Craport, 2, 2x, last: Spanberger, 5/9 at ASH Most Triples, Game (Indiv): 1, McCoy 1, 13x, last: Dedelow, 6/25 vs. KAN Most Hits, Game (Indiv.): 5, Robertson 4, 6x, last: Dorow, 6/11 vs. HIC Largest Margin of Defeat: 18 8, 5/6 vs. GVL

OFF ON THE WRONG FOOT June 27 s loss began with Greensboro giving up a home run to the first batter of the game for the second time this season. Delmarva s Kirvin Moesquit set the tone early when he launched Scott Sebald s third pitch over the left field wall. On April 9, Augusta s Malique Ziegler hit the first pitch of the game by Taylor Braley out of the park in a 7-4 loss to the GreenJackets. GIVE ME FIVE Delmarva s Will Robertson became the first Grasshopper opponent to collect five hits in a game this season when he went 5-for-6 as part of the Shorebirds 22-hit, 20-2 win in Greensboro on June 27. It was the first 5-hit game by a Hoppers opponent since August 24, 2017, Jake Burger went 5-for-5, hitting for the cycle and driving in three runs for Kannapolis. AIN T IT GRAND Cameron Baranek hit the Grasshoppers first grand slam of the 2018 season and the 13th in the South Atlantic League this season. The last Greensboro slam came July 3, 2017, when Luis Pinto went yard against Asheville s Jared Gesell. Only three times in the SAL Asheville, Lexington, and Rome have not hit a grand slam this season. BEGGS BETTER THAN BATTERS Dustin Beggs set a new season-high by a Hoppers pitcher when he struck out 10 batters over 5.0 innings in Tuesday s spot-start. He surpassed Taylor Braley's nine strikeouts April 20 against Charleston. Beggs has now fanned 45 batters in 33.2 innings while walking only six. In addition to having the higheststrikeout performance as a starter with 10 on Tuesday, he also holds the season mark for most K s out of the bullpen after fanning eight batters over 3.0 relief innings on April 27 at Asheville. HOPPIN THEIVES Greensboro stole a season-high five bases on June 11 against Hickory, with a season-high two players recording multiple swiped bags in a game. Both Cameron Baranek and Thomas Jones stole two bases while Jose Devers added one. The highlight of the game came on a well-executed double-steal as Devers broke for second base, inducing a throw from Crawdads catcher Sam Huff, allowing Jones to break from third and slide head first across the plate. The Grasshoppers previous season-high was three stolen bases, accomplished three times in 2018. DOUBLE THE TRIPLES Jose Devers became the first Grasshopper to triple twice in a game this season on June 8 against the BlueClaws. He finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBItriples, two of the team s season-high three triples in the game. In the first inning, he scored Cameron Baranek from first base with a drive to the right-field corner, and in a fit of déjà vu, hit a similar ball in the third that also brought Baranek across the plate. NO FREE PASSES Greensboro pitchers have put together 20 games in 2018 without walking a batter, most recently on July 30 at Rome. HEY NOW, YOU RE AN ALL-STAR The Grasshoppers will be well-represented when in the 59th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game presented by Pizza Hut on Tuesday, June 19, at First National Bank Field with two players and four members of the field staff selected for the event. Starting pitcher Ryan Lillie joins designated hitter Lazaro Alonso as the two Grasshoppers players selected, while manager Todd Pratt, pitching coach Mark DiFelice, athletic trainer Eric Reigelsberger, and strength & conditioning coach Brady Fitzgerald will serve on the field staff for the Northern Division Squad. SAL announced Hall of Fame Class of 2018: Eric Krupa, President of the South Atlantic League, has announced the members of the Class of 2018 for the South Atlantic League Hall of Fame. The three new inductees will be honored as part of the festivities surrounding the 59th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game, scheduled to be played on June 19, 2018, at First National Bank Field, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. This year s class includes three Greensboro natives: a former player in the Western Carolina League, a former mayor and a current executive. Former Hickory Rebels player Ken Free, Former Greensboro Mayor Jim Melvin, and Greensboro Grasshopper President and General Manager Donald Moore will be inducted. A lifelong Greensboro resident who is in his 17th year as President/GM of the Greensboro club, Donald Moore has been recognized as the SAL Executive of the Year four times (2006, 2007, 2008, 2013). Under Donald s leadership, the Grasshoppers have received the SAL Club Merit Award five times (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2013), the SAL Community Service Award three times (2014, 2015, 2016) and the Bob Freitas Award, given by Baseball America to the best Class-A organization, in 2008. Donald also serves as chairman of the SAL Scheduling Committee and is also the founder and President of the North Carolina Association of Professional Baseball Teams (NCAPBT), which consists of the 10 minor league teams in North Carolina. Moore was inducted into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 for his outstanding service to the community through his work with the Grasshoppers and many other youth sports initiatives he has been a part of in his lifetime. LILLIE LILLIE! Ryan Lillie tossed 7.0 shutout innings with eight strikeouts to pitch Greensboro past Augusta in the team s first game at the new SRP Park in North Augusta, S.C. The right hander worked around three hits and walked no batters in a 3-1 win for the Grasshoppers. Lillie threw 88 pitches with 62 strikes en route to the win, improving to 2-1. JONES DEBUTS WITH PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS Thomas Jones was named the first weekly award winner for the Grasshoppers this season, winning South Atlantic League Player of the Week honors for April 30-May 6, his first week with the team. He hit.350 (7-20) with a double, four home runs, six RBI, and eight runs scored in five games with Greensboro, starting with his debut on May 2. WALKING OFF THE SUNS Michael Hernandez gave the Grasshoppers their first walk-off home run of the season on May 2 as part of his career day, driving in four runs in an 10-8 win over the Hagerstown Suns. Hernandez finished 3-for- 5 with a pair of RBI-singles to go along with his game-winning 2-run home run off Jared Brasher with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. It was the Grasshoppers second walk-off win of the season and seventh win in the final at-bats during the 2018 season. IT S MILLER TIME Brandon Miller opened his May 1 start against the Suns by retiring the first 16 batters faced, taking a perfect game one out into the sixth inning in his fifth start of the season. Hagerstown eventually caught up to Miller, chasing him from the game after 5.1 innings pitched. The right-hander took no decision that day, allowing four runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts in the outing. EVERYBODY HITS All nine batters hit safely for the first time in 2018 when Greensboro fought off Asheville, 11-7 in 10 innings, on April 29. Infielders Jose Devers and Lazaro Alonso led the 16-hit charge with three hits each as the Grasshoppers batted around in the top of the 10th for a 7-run inning. In the big frame, the team collected six hits, including four doubles, to run away from the Tourists after Asheville rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force the extra inning. BEGGS BAFFLES BATTERS Dustin Beggs dominated out of the bullpen on April 27 at Asheville, striking out eight batters over 3.0 nearly-perfect innings of work. He struck out the first six batters he faced in perfect sixth and seventh innings. After inducing a groundout to open the bottom of the eighth and allowing a base hit the lone batter to reach against him on the night the righthander fanned the final two batters he faced to close his outing. Greensboro fell to Asheville, 3-2. SHARP STINGER AGAINST THE GREENJACKETS: In their first series against the new-look Augusta GreenJackets, Greensboro was stung early as Malique Ziegler led off the game for Augusta with a first-pitch home run off Hoppers starting pitcher Taylor Braley. The GreenJackets hit two home runs in the opening frame, with Ryan Kirby adding a 2-run blast, en route to a 7-4 lead over the Grasshoppers. JONESING FOR OFFENSE When it comes to first impressions, no Hopper has made a bigger or better one than outfielder Thomas Jones, who joined the team May 2. In his first three games with Greensboro (May 2-4), he went 2-for-4 in each game with at least one home run in all contests. In total, he hit four home runs in three games while batting.500 (6-12) with a double and six RBI.
