IMCC Newsletter 24 Friday, 10th August 2018 Digging In The Year 7 students had the opportunity to conduct their own archaeological dig in their studies of History this week. The students have been learning about the process archaeologists use to excavate artefacts, to form conclusions about how people lived in the past. Archaeologists from Archae-Aus brought samples from their own excavations in Perth for the students to uncover using the techniques required to carefully extract the artefacts. The students discovering artefacts ranging from pottery, coins and buttons to shells, charcoal and sharpened stones. The range of artefacts found in different layers (strata) of their dig gave students an idea of differences in how Indigenous Australians lived prior to European settlement. All the students now have the task of using their findings to write a report with their conclusions about how different groups of people lived in Perth in the past. Mrs Adele Baker Head of Social Sciences Catholic Performing Arts Festival This week at the festival the Swing Band and Jazz Ensemble performed at Sacred Heart College, Sorrento. Both ensembles played challenging and impressive pieces. The audience and adjudicator were impressed with both groups receiving wonderful reports. Congratulations to the following students who received awards for their performances last week at the festival: Outstanding Award Naomi Capon (vocal solo) Excellence Award Kya Moreno (vocal solo) Certificate of Merit Sophia Abad (vocal solo) Mia Gibson (vocal solo) There are still many events to be held at the festival which runs until the end of August at various locations around Perth. 2019 Specialist Music Applications Applications for the 2019 Specialist Music course were due this week. Thank you to the many students that applied. Auditions will be held on Tuesday 21 st August. An audition timetable will be sent home in the next week. We look forward to hearing the many talents of the Year 7 students in the coming weeks. Miss Kylie Malam Head of Performing Arts Aladdin On the 8 th August, the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Music, Dance and Drama students had the privilege of attending Disney s breath-taking Aladdin at the Crown Theatre, Perth. The production catered for all including an Australian reference by humorously incorporating the trademark of Vegemite into the beginning of the performance. The students attending the performance described the set design as highly-technical, with well-rehearsed and seamless transitions, particularly the magic carpet, which was spectacular, and the music. The fusion of musical styles created a fascination through the audience. Composer, Alan Menken, who wrote the music for the original film did a wonderful job. The dance routines were well choreographed, highly-skilful and vibrant, engaging us with every flip, turn and clap. The actors captured the essence of each character very well, the Genie s witty and humorous lines had us begging for more. Overall, Disney s Aladdin was truly magical, creating a spontaneous illusion which had us on the edge of our seats. We walked away speechless. Naomi Capon Arts Prefect Athletics Athletics training has begun. All students are welcome to improve fitness, technique and possibly represent the College at Interschool Athletics.
