Ms. Kosh, Dance Director for HMS, is excited to welcome her new students and returning dancers with enthusiasm. She has high expectations for the 2016-2017 school year. Please read through this newsletter for information regarding dance attire, class expectations, the tardy policy, rehearsals, and performance dates. Additionally, mark your calendars and notify Ms. Kosh as soon as possible if your student has a scheduling conflict. Ms. Kosh also asks that you sign, date & return the final page of this newsletter by Friday, August 26 th. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Kosh at your convenience. She looks forward to meeting each of you. It is going to be a fabulous year for Hopewell and the HMS dance department. Thank you for your continued support. Getting Started I N Dance In Dance, the students are expected to follow many studio guidelines daily. Students will dress out completely. Students will be in their warm-up lines 5 minutes after the tardy bell rings, dressed and prepared for class. Students will participate fully in daily warm-ups and workouts. Students will display respect to their instructor, guest choreographers & fellow dancers at all times. Food, gum, beverages, phones, etc. will not be allowed in class. Students will cooperate with others & display an open mind to learning new skills. Students will learn and follow proper dance class etiquette.

Page 2 Just Dance What HMS Dancers wear The required Hopewell Dance uniform includes: Hopewell Dance T-shirt: Students will need to order a Hopewell dance t-shirt from the dance department for $10. Please see the attached order form & return it to Ms. Kosh by August 26th. Black Jazz Pants/Leggings: Students need to provide their own long black jazz or yoga pants. Black Jazz Shoes: Students are also required to have black jazz shoes or plain black ankle socks. Beginning the 2 nd week of school, students will need to dress out in their own school-appropriate athletic shorts and a Hopewell t-shirt. Hopewell Middle School Dance students will be required to dress out in their dance uniform beginning Tuesday, September 6 th. (Please write their names permanently on the inside of their pants, t-shirts and jazz shoes.) Studio Uniform Guidelines: 1. Both men and women are expected to wear their hair pulled back out of their face during dance class. 2. NO jewelry may be worn during class with the exception of stud earrings. All jewelry should be kept in a Ziploc bag locked in the student s gym locker. 3. Students are responsible for laundering their own clothes. 4. Students should also bring roll-on deodorant to store in their locker. No aerosol body sprays, perfumes or glass bottles are allowed. 5. All clothes left behind will be placed in the lost and found cage located in the dressing room. Small valuables that are left behind will be stored in the coaches office or with Ms. Kosh. 6. If a student fails to dress out they will have difficulty participating and staying engaged in the learning activities for the day. Therefore, their Personal Engagement Grade will be affected. 7. When a student provides a handwritten parental request not to participate, he/she is still required to dress out unless the note states otherwise. As per TEA guidelines, a student may only be excused a maximum of three consecutive days with a parent note. A doctor s note is required for excused lack of participation for longer than three days. I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself. -Mikhail Baryshnikov

Just Dance Page 3 The Locker Room & Keeping Your Items Secure A locker is provided for each and every dance student. However, each student needs to provide their own COMBINATION lock because all students are required to lock up all of their belongings every day. Students are not permitted to share their locker combination with anyone nor are they allowed to share lockers!!! In addition, students are not permitted to use cell phones when in the locker room, especially as cameras as it is important that we protect the privacy of each student using the locker room. Hopewell Middle School and/or Round Rock ISD is not liable for items that are lost or stolen. Please take care of your dancewear and personal items. Also, remember to label all dancewear with students initials in permanent marker so it can be returned to you if it is lost and then found. Dance students earn the grade Dance students earn grades by combining 3 categories to make 100%: Personal Engagement (40%), Formative Assessments (30%), and Summative Assessments (30%). The Personal Engagement category demonstrates the students ability to dress out fully thus being able to be actively engaged in daily lesson; the Formative Assessments are daily assignments, games and activities that are developed to gauge the students progress throughout the unit; and finally, the Summative Assessments consist of the end of unit written quizzes and performance quizzes. Late work is accepted 1 day late for a maximum of 70, and students have 1 day per day absent to make up missed work including performance quizzes. Dance Grades Broken Down When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It s to enjoy each step along the way. -Wayne Dyer 40% Personal Engagement Personal Engagement Grades are tabulated as follows: 100/week o No Dance Clothes = -10 o Dressed out but not Dance Attire = -5 o No Dance Tshirt = -5 o No Dance Pants = -5 o Wearing Jewelry = -5 o Hair Down = -5 o Chewing Gum/Candy/Food = -5 30% Formative Assessments 30% Summative Assessments

Page 4 Just Dance Dance Students do Written Work? An educated dance student knows dance vocabulary, the history of the dance genres, and much more. Thus, it is essential for the dance student to not only dance but learn through written work. At Hopewell, dance students are required to keep certain supplies in the studio: A pocket folder with brads that contains loose-leaf paper (1 st RED; 2 nd - BLUE; 3 rd - GREEN; 4 th - ORANGE; 6 th -PURPLE; 8 th - YELLOW) A composition notebook A pen or pencil If supplies are lost, it is the responsibility of the student to replace them. Students Miss Class When a dance student is absent, it is their responsibility to ask the instructor what they missed & for their make-up work before or after class. It is also their responsibility to set up a time before or after school to learn missed choreography with the instructor. Students Are Tardy to Class Dance students are expected to be in their warmup/roll call lines 5 minutes after the tardy bell rings. Spotlight on Performances Fall Show, Intersection Students are required to perform in the annual RRISD Dance Show Intersection. It is held at the Performing Arts Center located next to McNeil High School. Please invite your family and friends to the performance! A student can acquire a tardy by being in the locker room after the tardy bell or by being late to their warm-up/roll call line.
