Weather permitting, we will all be outside walking the track and all students will be dismissed outside immediately following the parade at 3:20PM. As the children are excitedly talking about and preparing costumes for Halloween, please be reminded that replicas of weapons or toy weapons are not permitted at school. As always, if your child s class is having a party please remember to send snacks to share that are peanut free. This is part of the Safe Schools policy and we ask for your support in helping us ensure everyone s comfort, safety and well-being. Don t forget to bring your cameras as this is a sight to be seen! Want to report a student absence? Want to know when the deadline is? Need a copy of a field trip form? Save yourself a call and program allison.walker@tdsb.on.ca in your smartphone and email Allison in the office for any of your Whitney School needs.

Picture Re-takes Wednesday October 26 th After receiving several parental concerns regarding school photos, I informed Bright Pics of my disappointment. In response, they have written an apology letter to the Whitney community here. We encourage you to take advantage of the photo re-take day and if you have any questions, please give me a call. On Photo Retake Day, the photographer will ONLY retake individual shots, not whole class photos. If Allison has already confirmed your child s individual photo, you do not need to call again. Debbie Dogs on School Property This a reminder that dogs are NOT permitted on school property at any time, including the weekends. Although there are MANY signs on the property asking community members to keep dogs out, it is not always abided by. Unfortunately, we have had several occurrences of owners not picking up after their dogs, which in turn leaves a large mess for our caretakers on a daily basis. Please be kind and respectful to our school grounds for the sake of our children. Thank you. SPA DAY Friday November 4 th Character development at Whitney P.S. is about helping our students learn and practice positive character attributes, which will help them not only do their best, but be their best. During the month of November, we will be focusing on the character trait empathy. Empathy means putting yourself in someone else s shoes and understanding, sensing, and sharing in the feelings and emotions of others. Empathy means showing love, compassion and encouragement as well as identifying with another s situation and feelings. During the month of November, teachers will be discussing what empathy looks like and feels like in the classroom with all students. Please join us on Friday November 4th at 10:30 am for our next SPA Day Assembly. Mr. van Hoeijen s grade 4/5 class will be leading this assembly and sharing in their understanding of empathy with the whole school. It is also PJ and MOUSTACHE day so kids can wear their comfy pyjamas and sport a moustache in support of Movember!

Andrew Larsen is coming to Whitney PS! On Friday, October 28th in the library, acclaimed Tor onto-based Canadian author Andrew Larsen will be visiting Whitney Jr. Public School to present his newest picture book, A Squiggly Story to the grade 1 & 2 students. According to the New York Times: A Squiggly Story is a charming little book that may help first time storytellers keep trying to write stories. Mr. Larsen is the author of many charming children s books, including In the Tree House about a hot summer day when a city-wide blackout occurs, and The Imaginary Garden, about a family that lives in an apartment building and creates an imaginary world for themselves by painting it on a giant canvas on their porch. Students may pre-order books using the book order form here and will also be distributed to all grade 1 and 2 students in class. Please print off and fill out the pre-order book form and return it to Mr. Winter (room 305) by Friday October 28th. More information about the author can be found on his website: http://www.andrewlarsen.ca

Do you have costumes that are too small, no longer wanted, or that have just been forgotten about? If you do, please donate them to our Whitney s Hallowe'en Costume Drive Oct 19-24 We will be donating all your clean costumes to the Children s Development Institute (no toy guns or knives please). You can place the costumes in the bins in front of the Main Office. Thank you for your support and helping extend the fun of Hallowe'en throughout the community. Lisa Clark

cross-country As another Cross-country season draws to a close I want to say a big thank you to all the parents that got their children up and ready for early morning practices, who drove their own kids and others to meets, who cheered on our Wildcats, who ran with their kids on weekends, and who supported and encouraged their kids. The South District Conference Finals took place on Wednesday October 19th on what was an incredible day. Our Conference team of 20 runners did amazingly all running fantastic races against some of the best athletes in Toronto. Congratulations to all of our Conference finalists on representing Whitney with pride! Our season officially ends with our City Finals on October 27th. Help me in cheering on Beats and Ella as they prepare for the big day! Go Wildcats! slo-pitch On Tuesday Oct. 11th, our girls played a one day slo-pitch tournament against Brown, Rosedale and Hillcrest. We had some remarkable plays! Mackenzie and Jessica had some great pop up catches, Sophie and Georgia amazed everyone with their stellar pitching, and Beats hit a home run! Everyone played so well and came together as a team. We persevered in the last inning of the last game to make a Jays worthy comeback with 5 runs, just one run short of tying the game. Our Wildcats made us proud and we moved on to the semifinals to compete against Frankland P.S. During that game, the girls were great at bat and had some exciting pop up catches from Riley and Beats but unfortunately they didn't move on. They did however show support and excellent sportsmanship. Thanks girls you made us extremely proud! Coach Janice & Ms. Karadimas football Congratulations to our Boy s Football team who went an impressive 3-1 at their tournament but just missed advancing to the playoffs in a very tight fight for that final spot. Our Girl s Football team is getting ready for their finals match-up next Wednesday October 26th. Let s cheer them on Whitney! upcoming sports Boy s Volleyball tryouts start this week.
