PREFACE This book is dedicated to players, coaches, and fans of Bronco girls hockey. It is the hope that this book will be a source of the history of the Bronco girls hockey program, and to be a guide to the many great memories of triumphant games and also to the difficult memories of heart-breaking defeats of the past. I wish to thank the following people for their help with putting this information together. First, the people at the International Falls Library, who took the time to assist with finding many past newspapers. Second, Tim Mellstrom, who retained the scores of the games of the first few years, and was there to answer the technical questions. Finally, Stuart Nordquist, who kindled my interest in the history of all Bronco athletics and without whose original vision and love for Bronco athletics, this book would not have been possible. Timm Ringhofer 1

REFLECTIONS Girls hockey in International Falls began as a club sport during the 1996-1997 school year. Dan Dissell started the program and coached it for two years before handing the reins over to Tim Mellstrom for the 1998-1999 season. The girls hockey team became a varsity sport beginning with the 1999-2000 season. The Broncos played their first varsity game at Thief River Falls on November 19, 1999, losing by a score of 6-1. The first home game was a 4-4 tie played at Bronco Arena on November 23, 1999, versus Greenway. The fourth game of the first season brought about the first- ever victory, a 2-1 win over Pequot Lakes. The Broncos were a part of Section 7 for their first two seasons as Minnesota girls hockey was only a one-class sport. The wins were at a premium for the first two seasons, but during the third season, the Broncos posted nine wins and ended the season with their first home playoff game versus East Grand Forks. The 2-1 four-overtime loss was a disappointing but exciting way to end the season. Before the 2001-2002 season, girls hockey became a two-class sport, and the Broncos were placed in Section 3A. The 2002-2003 season was very similar to the third season record-wise, and the Broncos were defeated by East Grand Forks again in the playoffs. The fifth season again had a similar record to the previous two seasons; however the Broncos achieved their first 10-win season and first-ever playoff victory, an 8-3 trouncing of Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis on February 10, 2004. Beginning in the 2004-2005 season, Section 3A was split into two subsections: North and South. International Falls was placed in the North Subsection along with Crookston-Fisher-Red Lake Falls, East Grand Forks, Lake of the Woods-Rainy River- Indus, Roseau, Thief River Falls, and Warroad. The Broncos ended the 2004-05 season with their second consecutive season of double-digit wins including a home playoff win over Lake of the Woods-Rainy River-Indus. The 2005-2006 season was the third consecutive season of double-digit wins and also increased the most number of wins in a season to eleven. The 2006-2007 season again brought about changes to the Bronco girls hockey program. The Minnesota State High School League made the change from four 2

sections to eight sections for girls hockey in Class A. This placed the Broncos in Section 8A along with Crookston-Fisher-Red Lake Falls, East Grand Forks, Lake of the Woods-Rainy River-Indus, Roseau, Thief River Falls, and Warroad which were the same teams as the North Subsection of Section 3A. Also, the administration and school board decided that the program needed to go in a new direction replacing Tim Mellstrom and naming Bruce Elson as the second head coach in Bronco girls hockey history. With a young team, the Broncos failed to reach double-digit wins or win a playoff game for the first time in four seasons. Before the 2007-2008 season, the Broncos were placed in Section 7A for the next two seasons along with East Range (Babbitt-Embarrass-Tower-Soudan-Ely), Eveleth- Gilbert-Virginia-Mountain Iron-Buhl-Mesabi East, Hibbing-Chisholm, Moose Lake Area (Moose Lake-Willow River-Barnum-East Central-Cromwell), Princeton, and Silver Bay-Two Harbors-Cook County. The Broncos were able to attain their first ever.500 record for a season and also increased the most number of wins in a season to thirteen. A thrilling, 4-3 double overtime victory over East Range in the quarterfinal game of the Section 7A playoffs was played at Bronco Arena which lead to the Broncos first appearance in a section semifinal game. In the 2008-2009 season, Chisago Lakes Area was added to Section 7A, and also was the Broncos opponent in the first round of the playoffs. The Wildcats traveled to Bronco Arena and upset the Broncos, 5-1. The Broncos were unable to match or better the previous season s.500 record. Before the 2009-2010 season, the administration and school board decided that the program needed to go in a new direction replacing Bruce Elson and naming Gerald Bolstad as the third head coach in Bronco girls hockey history. Bolstad was the first head coach of the girls hockey program not to be a faculty member. The Broncos were able to win their first road playoff game in team history as they defeated Princeton 4-2 and also improved their record to back to the.500 mark. In the 2010-2011 season, the Broncos won their 100 th game in program history as they defeated Fort Frances 2-1 on February 2 nd. The Broncos again won a playoff game on the road against Silver Bay Area in overtime 4-3 and then lost to Chisago Lakes Area in overtime in the section semifinal at Cloquet as the Wildcats ended the Broncos 3

season for the third consecutive season. For the 2011-2012 season, Proctor- Hermantown was added to Section 7A, giving the section eight teams. The Broncos achieved their first-ever above.500 regular season in the 2011-2012 season with a 15-8-0 record and also ended the season with their first-ever above.500 record with a 16-9-0 mark. The sixteen wins set a new mark for wins in a season. The season ended as the previous three had with a loss to Chisago Lakes Area and again in overtime in the section semifinal. The 2012-2013 season was a season plagued with injuries. The Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs in overtime for the third consecutive season in a double overtime game played in Princeton. Beginning with the 2013-2014 season, Section 7A was reconfigured to have only six teams as Chisago Lakes Area and Princeton were removed, leaving Eveleth-Gilbert Area, Hibbing-Chisholm, Moose Lake Area, Proctor-Hermantown, Silver Bay Area and the Broncos. For the fourth straight season, the Broncos lost in the playoffs in overtime and the second straight year in double overtime as they fell to Hibbing-Chisholm in the Section 7A semifinals. The Broncos had their second season that ended with above.500 record as they went 15-9-3. In the 2014-2015 season, the Broncos were at the.500 mark for the season with a 13-13-0 record. The season would end like the previous season, to Hibbing-Chisholm in the Section 7A semifinals. The Marshall School of Duluth was added to Section 7A beginning with the 2015-2016 season. The Broncos had a 14-11 record in 2015-2016 as they scored more than 100 goals in a season for the first time in their history. The Broncos had another first in their history as they played outdoors at the holiday tournament in Coon Rapids. The Bronco lost in the Section 7A quarterfinals in double overtime to Moose Lake Area. The 2016-2017 season brought about another 100+ goal season for the Broncos, and the girls would lose in the Section 7A quarterfinals to Duluth Marshall in overtime. This marked the sixth time in seven seasons that the Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs in overtime. In 2017-18, the Falls would record their ninth straight season of double-digit wins as they finished the season with a 13-10-2 records and lost to Proctor- Hermantown in the Section 7A semifinals. This concluded the first nineteen seasons of Bronco girls hockey. 4
