FISH BITES MIAMI MARLINS (46-70) RHP David Phelps (4-8, 4.35) at ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (75-41) RHP Carlos Martinez (12-4, 2.62) BUSCH STADIUM, ST. LOUIS, MO Sunday, August 16, 2015 2:15 P.M. EDT The Marlins wrap up this three-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals today at 2:15 EDT, with St. Louis-native David Phelps taking the mound for Miami. The right-hander, who is looking to snap a five-game losing streak, is making just his second start against the Cardinals, suffering the loss on May 27, 2014 at Busch Stadium; he allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits (one home run) and two walks, with five strikeouts, in 6.0 innings. St. Louis will send right-hander Carlos Martinez to the bump, who is 1-0, 3.86 (7.0 ip/3 er) in one career start against the Marlins. Following today s contest, the Marlins will head north to Milwaukee for a three-game set against the Brewers. Miami enters this trip following a brief two-game homestand that saw the Marlins sweep the Red Sox. VS. THE CARDINALS Miami looks to snap a five-game losing streak against the Cardinals. The Marlins are 0-5 against the Redbirds this season, suffering a sweep at Marlins Park from June 23-25. The Fish are 8-16 against St. Louis since the beginning of the Miami era, but have won two of their last four meetings at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals lead the all-time series, 103-68, and have a 50-36 lead in the Gateway City. LAST NIGHT Miami could not take advantage of its opportunities, going 0x8 with runners in scoring position and dropping the middle game of this three-game set at St. Louis, 6-2. The Marlins erased an early one-run deficit in the second inning, when Marcel Ozuna singled and moved to third on a single by Cole Gillespie. Ozuna then scored on a balk by John Lackey. The Cardinals retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second, and the score held until Justin Bour hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to cut the deficit in half. The Cards capped the scoring with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Ichiro Suzuki had two singles on the night, with his single in the first inning marking professional hit #4,192 for Suzuki, unofficially surpassing Ty Cobb for the second-most career hits all-time. UP NEXT Following today s game, Miami heads north for its first meeting of 2015 with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brew Crew won the 2014 season series, 3-4, but the two clubs split the four-game series at Miller Park. The Fish were 20-17 over their first 37 games in Milwaukee, but have gone 5-16 over their last 21 games. Overall, the Marlins trail the all-time series, 59-63, and are 8-13 since moving to Miami. EXCLUSIVE COMPANY Ichiro Suzuki recorded career MLB hits #2,914 and #2,915 last night. He has 4,193 career hits between Japan (1,278) and MLB, unofficially the second-most career hits all-time. Additionally, Suzuki, who is 38 th on the all-time hits list, is also the active leader in stolen bases (496), ranking 23 rd on the all-time list (since 1898, modern stolen base rule). According to Elias, he would become just the eighth player all-time to reach 2,900 hits and 500 steals, joining Ty Cobb (4,191/901), Honus Wagner (3,430/724), Paul Molitor (3,319/504), Eddie Collins (3,313/743), Rickey Henderson (3,055/1,406), Lou Brock (3,023/938), and Barry Bonds (2,935/514). Earlier this season, Suzuki passed several baseball legends on the all-time hits list, including Babe Ruth (2,873, 43 rd ) and Mel Ott (2,876, 42 nd ). EARLY RISERS The Marlins are batting.269 (345x1281) day games this season, with 55 doubles, 11 triples, 31 home runs and 159 RBI in 38 games. The.269 average ranks second in the National League and fifth in MLB, behind Detroit (.293), Boston (.283), Kansas City (.271) and Colorado (.271). Three Marlins players rank in the top 10 in the NL in average in day games. Dee Gordon leads the League with a.386 (54x140) mark, Justin Bour (.347) ranks fifth and J.T. Realmuto (.338) ranks eighth. In addition, Realmuto ranks third in the NL in slugging (.662) in day games, while Bour ranks sixth (.627). HOT COLE Cole Gillespie continues to take advantage of his opportunities, batting.400 (14x35) in August, with five multi-hit games, five runs scored, two doubles and two RBI. The five multi-hit games came in consecutive contests, marking a career high. Overall, Gillespie has made 25 starts for Miami this season, 14 in center field, 10 in right field and one in left field. He is batting.340 (32x94) as a starter, with 12 runs, nine doubles, a triple, home run and nine RBI. Miami also ranks fourth in the NL and sixth in MLB with a.987 fielding percentage (4212 TC). ROOKIE CATCHING ON J.T. Realmuto has 81 hits this season, surpassing Charles Johnson s previous Club record (79) for hits by a rookie catcher.
