FISH BITES MIAMI MARLINS (46-68) RHP Tom Koehler (8-9, 3.75) at ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (73-41) LHP Jaime Garcia (4-4, 1.77) BUSCH STADIUM, ST. LOUIS, MO Friday, August 14, 2015 8:15 P.M. EDT The Marlins open a six-game road swing with the first of three games against the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at 8:15 EDT. Right-hander Tom Koehler is making his third career start and appearance against the Cardinals, owning a 1-1 record and 11.17 ERA (9.2 ip/12 er); both outings came at Marlins Park, with the most recent being a win on August 11, 2014. St. Louis will counter with left-hander Jaime Garcia, who is 1-0, 1.59 lifetime in three starts against the Fish. Following this weekend series, the Marlins will head north to Milwaukee for a three-game set against the Brewers. Miami enters this trip following a brief two-game homestand that saw the Marlins sweep the Red Sox. VS. THE CARDINALS Miami opens a three-game set at Busch Stadium tonight, looking to snap a four-game losing streak against the Cardinals. The Marlins are 0-3 against the Redbirds this season after suffering a sweep at Marlins Park from June 23-25. The Fish are 8-14 against St. Louis since the beginning of the Miami era, but have won their last two meetings at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals lead the all-time series, 101-68, and have a 48-36 lead in the Gateway City. WEDNESDAY Miami let an early 4-1 lead slip away, but responded with 10 hits and 10 runs in the sixth inning, tying the Club record for runs and hits in an inning, in a 14-6 victory over the Red Sox on Wednesday. It marked the first sweep of Boston in Franchise history. Dee Gordon got the Marlins an early 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run, his first of the season and the third of his career. Miami pushed three across in the second on an RBI triple by J.T. Realmuto, a single by Ichiro Suzuki, and a sac bunt by Gordon. After the Red Sox rallied to tie the score at 4-4, the Marlins blew the game open in the sixth. Realmuto drove in the first run with an RBI single, Suzuki followed with a two-run triple, and Adeiny Hechavarria, Martin Prado, Derek Dietrich added RBI singles before Realmuto capped the inning with his first career grand slam. Kyle Barraclough earned his first career win, with 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. RUNNING FOR THE BOOKS Miami s 10-run sixth inning tied a Club record for runs in an inning; it was previously done on July 9, 2009 at Arizona, when the Fish scored 10 runs in the eighth inning. The Marlins also had 10 hits in the sixth inning Wednesday, tying a Club record for hits in an inning; they previously had 10 hits in the seventh inning on July 11, 2015 vs. Cincinnati and in the fourth inning on August 20, 2012 at Arizona. Also, J.T. Realmuto set a Club record for an inning by recording five RBI in the frame. BIG INNINGS The Marlins on Wednesday scored 10 runs in the sixth inning vs. Boston, marking Miami s third inning with eight-or-more runs in 2015, the most in a season in Club history. The Fish also have two eight-run innings this season: on July 11 vs. Cincinnati (bottom 7 th ) and June 16 vs. New York-AL (bottom 1 st ). The only other time in Club history that Miami had two innings with eight-or-more runs in one season was 1995, when the team scored eight in the top of the fifth on September 17 at Colorado and in the top of the eighth on July 17 at San Francisco. CAN T STOP THE BACKSTOP J.T. Realmuto on Wednesday vs. Boston fell a double shy of becoming the first player in Club history to hit for the cycle, but still had a day to remember, with three hits and a career-high six RBI. The six RBI tied the Marlins record for a single game by a catcher, as Charles Johnson also drove in six runs on June 23, 1995 at Cincinnati. According to ESPN Stats and Info, the only catcher to ever record more RBI in a game against the Red Sox was Yogi Berra, who had eight RBI in 1957. ROOKIE CATCHING ON J.T. Realmuto was 3x5 with a triple, home run and six RBI on Wednesday. He recorded his 78 th, 79 th and 80 th hits of the season, surpassing Charles Johnson s previous Club record (79) for hits by a rookie catcher. The triple on Wednesday marked his sixth of the season, tying him with Benito Santiago (1993) for the Marlins single-season record for triples by a catcher. On Tuesday, Realmuto recorded his 16 th double of the season, breaking a tie with Charles Johnson (1995) for the most by a rookie catcher in Club history. Charles Johnson holds the Club mark for most games caught (97), while Realmuto ranks second (82). Among National League rookies this season, Realmuto ranks sixth in average (min. 300 AB) at.255 (80x314), second in triples (6), 10 th in hits and 11 th in doubles (16). Among all NL catchers, he ranks first in triples, fifth in doubles and runs scored (39), seventh in games played and hits, eighth in home runs (6), and tied for eighth in RBI (35). GOING RIGHT AGAINST THE LEFT The Marlins, who recorded 13 hits against left-handed pitching on Wednesday, enter tonight s game against southpaw starter Jaime Garcia with the best average against lefties in the National League at.283 (245x866) and rank second in the Majors, behind Toronto (.284). Despite the offensive success, Miami is just 11-14 in games when facing a left-handed starter. Since July 11, the Fish are batting.343 (60x175) against LHP, the best mark in the Majors over that span. The Red Sox rank second with a.317 average, followed by the Dodgers with a.313 mark. Dee Gordon has been driving those numbers this season, as he ranks second in the NL in average vs. left-handers at.368, trailing only Paul Goldschmidt (.384). That is the highest mark in the Majors by a left-handed batter, ahead of Anthony Rizzo (.346). Mike Jacobs had three hits and a home run, while Hanley Ramirez added three hits of his own. Dontrelle Willis recorded his fifth career double-digit strikeout-game, fanning 11 batters. Overall record on this date: 10-10 Ichiro Suzuki recorded career hit #2,911 and #2,912 on Wednesday, going 2x5 with an RBI single and a two-run triple. He has 4,190 career hits between Japan (1,278) and MLB, just one hit shy of unofficially tying Ty Cobb s career hit total. Additionally, Suzuki, who is 38 th on the all-time hits list, is also the active leader in stolen bases (496), ranking 23 rd on the all-time list (since 1898, modern stolen base rule).
