game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Friday, August 10 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes continue a four-game set tonight against the Iowa Cubs, part of only seven home games in the first 24 contests of August. After last night s victory, the Baby Cakes have won five straight for the third time this season, and a win tonight would equal their season-best streak, set May 3-8. New Orleans had dropped nine of 12 meetings with the I-Cubs this season prior to last night. LAST TIME OUT Sandy Alcantara and three relievers combined on a three-hit shutout as the Baby Cakes beat Iowa, 1-0. Alcantara worked out of a first-inning jam after he walked two of the game s first three batters, settling in to retire 10 in a row until Iowa s first hit. Alcantara set down the final seven I-Cubs and ended his night with six punchouts. New Orleans scored its lone run in the second inning when Tomas Telis doubled, went to third on a fly out and scampered home on a passed ball. Jose Quijada took over in the seventh and walked a pair of batters before fanning Bijan Rademacher to escape trouble. He issued a two-out walk in the eighth, but Jumbo Diaz came on to strike out Zagunis to leave the tying run on base. Tyler Kinley allowed two singles in the ninth, putting runners at the corners with one out, but induced a pop up from Jacob Hannemann and fanned Chris Gimenez to complete his sixth save. ON THE HILL Zac Gallen makes his team-leading 21st start. In three games against the I-Cubs this season, Gallen is 1-1 with a 5.02 ERA (8 ER/14.1 IP), and yielded eight hits and five runs in a 5-3 loss to Iowa at the Shrine on June 28. In his other seven outings at home, Gallen is 4-1 with a 0.43 ERA (2 ER/41.2 IP), including a streak of 29.0 consecutive shutout frames to open the season. Prior to his loss in El Paso last Friday, Gallen had won three straight following his All-Star Game appearance, allowing just one run and nine hits in 17.2 innings, becoming the first NOLA pitcher to win three straight starts since Jose Urena in 2015. new orleans baby cakes (55-60) vs. iowa cubs (42-73) RHP Zac Gallen (7-6, 3.85) vs. RHP Trevor Clifton (2-2, 3.94) On This Date... 2005: Rick Short goes 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, as NOLA scores five times in the first inning en route to a 6-1 win over Portland. Brendan Harris caps the early scoring with a two-run double, while Short goes on to collect four hits in each of the next two games to raise his batting average to.400 entering the season s final two weeks. SHUCK HONOURED The PCL named J.B. Shuck its Player of the Week for July 30-August 5, becoming the first NOLA player to take the honor since Destin Hood in May 2017. Shuck went 11x16 (.688) in five games and reached base in 14 of 19 plate appearances (.737) to lead all of MiLB in both categories. He also had PCL-best marks in slugging (1.000) and OPS (1.737). In the four games in Albuquerque, Shuck reached base 14 times, going 10x18 with four walks. Shuck is 27x59 (.458) over his last 17 games, adding a home run, six doubles and 13 runs scored, and has boosted his batting average from.150 to.333 in that span. With a walk last night, he has reached base safely in 13 games in a row. DEAN OF HITS Austin Dean picked up his 24th multi-hit game and homered for the second time on the road trip on Tuesday, after going his previous 47 games with only one home run. Additionally, he has six doubles in seven games in August, one more than he totaled in his first 76 games with the Cakes. Dean owns a.340 batting average between AA Jacksonville and NOLA, good for eighth in all of Minor League Baseball, and has moved into a tie for eighth in the PCL batting race (.319). His 130 hits overall are 10th-most in the minors. LONELIEST NUMBER The Baby Cakes played in their 41st one-run game, four more than any other PCL club. New Orleans has won their last two one-run contests, but are still 17-24, the second-worst mark in the league (Albuquerque, 7-15). GOOSE EGGS The Baby Cakes recorded their 10th shutout of the season, and their second 1-0 blanking of Iowa (July 21 in Des Moines). The Cakes rank second in the PCL to Omaha (11), with eight of the shutouts coming at the Shrine. NOLA had 11 shutouts last year, tied for second-most in the league, and has ranked either first or second in the league in shutouts in seven of the last eight seasons. New Orleans has been shutout four times, tied for sixth-most in the PCL. DIAZZLING After going hitless last night, Isan Diaz is 4x23 (.174) in seven home games. Diaz had recorded three multi-hit games in a fourgame road series in Albuquerque, and is 13x41 (.317) in 11 games on the road. On Saturday, Diaz became the first NOLA player with two triples in a game since Vinny Rottino on April 15, 2010, also at Isotopes Park. Diaz leads all Marlins farmhands with 39 extra-base hits. TOMAS THE TANK Tomas Telis scored the lone run in last night s contest and extended his hitting streak to nine games, tying his season high, by going 2x4 with two doubles. Telis had just four doubles in 222 at-bats entering last night. He is batting.364 (24x66) with 13 RBI in 19 games since June 30 and now has 171 career hits as a New Orleans catcher, third-most in club history behind only Raul Chavez (288) and Mitch Meluskey (183). DANDY SANDY Sandy Alcantara improved to 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA (10 ER/43.1 IP) at the Shrine, where opponents are batting.192 (29x151). Last night was his second career start allowing just one hit, joining a 6.1-inning effort for Low-A Peoria on July 2, 2016 vs. Clinton. It was his third consecutive quality start with the Cakes and fifth in his last six outings as NOLA upped its record to 10-5 in Alcantara s starts. RISPY BUSINESS New Orleans went 0x6 with RISP last night, after going 27x66 (.409) with runners in scoring position across the four games in Albuquerque. NOLA is batting.277 with RISP, their best mark since batting.279 since 2007. The Cakes have stranded the third-most baserunners in the PCL (865), fewer than only Fresno (869) and Tacoma (898). NEXT OF KIN Tyler Kinley pitched in his team-leading 33rd game and recorded his sixth save in eight opportunities. He has not allowed a run in 14 of his last 15 appearances, during which opponents are hitting.228 (13x57). ROSTER MOVES The Marlins selected the contract of Rafael Ortega, who had set the single-season franchise record for triples (10) with a pair of three-baggers on Tuesday in Albuquerque. Ortega, 14x37 (.378) over his last nine games with the Cakes, is appearing in the majors for the first time since 2016 with the Angels. Additionally, Miami has activated righthander Drew Rucinski, ending his rehab stint with the Cakes before he made an appearance. NAWLINS NOTES Baby Cakes relievers have not given up a run in their past three games (9.0 IP)... Peter Mooney is 5x11 (.455) in his last three games, adding two RBI... The Cakes are 29-4 when allowing two runs or fewer... NOLA is second in the PCL with a.314 batting average in August, trailing only Nashville (.325)... SEVENTH HEAVEN With 7.0 shutout innings on 4/21 vs. Oklahoma City, Gallen became the first Baby Cakes pitcher to work at least 7.0 innings in 2018. Gallen held the Dodgers to four hits and fanned five to record his second victory. He repeated the feat on 5/3 vs. Round Rock with 7.0 scoreless frames in a no-decision with a season-high six strikeouts. HOME SWEET HOME Gallen did not surrender a run over his first four starts at home, pitching 26.0 consecutive scoreless innings to open the season. Opponents batted.204 (19x93) and just.048 (1x21) with runners in scoring position. The streak ended at 29.0 IP on 6/2 vs. Memphis when Anthony Garcia led off the fourth inning with a home run. K MAN With nine strikeouts in 6.0 IP on 5/9 at Round Rock, Gallen equaled his career high, set twice in 2017 with High-A Palm Beach. It was Gallen s fifth quality start in his first seven outings of the season. CENTURY MARK Gallen threw 107 pitches in a no-decision on 6/2 vs. Memphis, a new career high. Gallen had never thrown more than 100 pitches, a plateau reached twice in 2017 while with High-A Palm Beach. He surpassed the mark with 111 pitches on 6/28 vs. Iowa, most by a NOLA pitcher in 2018. LIMITING THE DAMAGE Though opponents batted.284 against Gallen through his first 13 starts, he yielded only a.213 average (20x94) with runners in scoring position. Each of the four home runs he surrendered came with the bases empty. DIRTY DOZEN Colorado Springs knocked Gallen for 12 hits in 4.2 innings on 7/3, matching Jarlin Garcia (6/27 vs. Iowa) for the most hits surrendered by a Baby Cakes pitcher in 2018. The Sky Sox used three home runs, a career high against Gallen, to score nine runs, the first time in 45 career starts he allowed more than five runs in a game. YOU RE AN ALL-STAR For the second straight season, Gallen earned league All-Star honors as he was selected to the PCL squad by ranking ninth in the league with a 3.43 ERA through his first 15 starts. Gallen needed just seven pitches to retire the International League side in order in the sixth inning of the Triple-A All-Star Game on 7/11. ROAD WOES Across his first nine road assignments, Gallen went 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA (33 ER/43.1 IP). Opponents batted.358 (67x187), and plated at least four runs in six of the nine starts. BACK ON TRACK Gallen snapped a nine-start winless drought with 6.0 innings of one-run, three-hit ball on 7/16 at Oklahoma City.
