The Z's had won eight of 1 meetings with the Sky Sox at Zephyr Field prior to consecutive 8-2 defeats the last two evenings, and now trail the all-time series YESTERDAY S NEWS Colorado Springs scored five runs on five hits and a walk in the first inning off Z s starter Adam Conley, who was making his Triple-A debut, en route to an 8-2 win. Conley allowed seven runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4. innings. The Sky Sox batted around in the top of the first, getting a two-run double from Kyle Parker, an RBI double from Matt McBride and a two-run single from Drew Garcia. Josh Rodriguez homered in the bottom of the frame off Colorado Springs starter Tyler Matzek, but Jake Marisnick's fifth-inning double was the only other hit in five innings against Matzek, who fanned 11 batters. The Z's and Sky Sox each struck out 14 times. ON THE HILL After back-to-back games featuring Zephyrs starters making their Triple-A debuts, Elih Villanueva gets the nod in the series finale. Villanueva has spent most of the last three seasons in New Orleans, and enters the season ranked seventh on the franchise's career chart in starts (52) and ninth in innings pitched (324.1) and strikeouts (219). Villanueva was 2-3 with a 3.5 ERA in eight starts for the Zephyrs in 213 in a season interrupted by an elbow injury. He pitched 6. innings in each of his final three outings, including the season finale on 9/2 vs. Albuquerque, the third consecutive year he had pitched the Z s final game of the season. DUECES WILD The Zephyrs have scored two runs in each of their first three games. They had not opened a season with two or fewer runs in three straight contests since 211, when they scored a single tally in each of their first three games, all of them losses. The Z s last went three consecutive games with two or fewer runs from June 29-July 1 last season, when they dropped two at Round Rock and one at Omaha. COLD BATS A day after they scored two runs on two hits, the Z s mustered four hits Saturday, including a pair of solo home runs by Josh Rodriguez and Justin Bour. The 14 strikeouts by Zephyrs hitters were their highest total in a game since they struck out 14 times last August 18 vs. Iowa. The Z's are batting.161 through the first three games, ranking ahead of only Iowa (.151) in the PCL. UNLUCKY SEVEN The seven runs Colorado Springs scored against Adam Conley were the most he had given up in a start since August 16, 212 with Class A Jupiter, when he allowed seven runs and left the game after one-third of an inning. Conley allowed more than two runs in only six of 25 starts in 213 for AA Jacksonville. MILITARY APPRECIATION Today the Zephyrs will debut their military appreciation camouflage jerseys, which will be worn for each Sunday home game throughout the 214 season, the first time a military jersey will be utilized as part of the Zephyrs' regular uniform rotation. The Z's are partnering with Budweiser to raise awareness and money for Folds of Honor, which provides financial support to families who have lost loved ones in military service. The jerseys will be auctioned off on Fan Appreciation Night (August 31), with proceeds going to Folds of Honor. THE SKIPPER Andy Haines takes the reigns of the Zephyrs, becoming the 14th manager in New Orleans history. Entering his seventh season in the Marlins organization, and sixth as manager, Haines spent each of the last two years at Class A Jupiter, where his 212 club came within five outs of the Florida State League championship. He previously managed two seasons in Greensboro, winning the 211 South Atlantic League title, as well as one year in Jamestown, and including one year at the helm of Windy City of the independent Frontier League, has compiled a record over six seasons. Haines celebrated his 37th birthday Wednesday, and is the youngest manager at the Triple-A level. THE STAFF Pitching coach Charlie Corbell and hitting coach Damon Minor both return to the Zephyrs for a fourth consecutive season. Corbell, who was also the team s pitching coach in 25, last year guided the Z s to the PCL's best team ERA (3.54) for the second year in a row. Under Minor s tutelage, the Zephyrs established a franchise record in 212 by hitting 153 home runs. Athletic trainer Chris Olson also returns for his second season in New Orleans, while strength and conditioning coach Quentin Eberhardt joins the Marlins organization after two years in the Houston Astros system, most recently at AA Corpus Christi. NAWLINS NOTES Justin Bour has hit safely in each of the first three games, belting his first home run of the season in the ninth inning. He had 18 homers in 213 with AA Tennessee The Zephyrs bullpen has a 2.95 ERA with 21 strikeouts 12.1 innings Z's starters allowed six runs or more in back-to-back starts for the first time since May 21-22, 212 at Reno (Tom Koehler and J.D.
