FISH BITES Marlins' right-hander José Ureña will throw the very first pitch of Major League Baseball's 2018 Championship Season this afternoon when Miami kicks off its 25th Anniversary campaign against the visiting Chicago Cubs at 12:40 p.m. Ureña, who went 14-7 with a 3.82 ERA last season, has a 2-1 record and 3.18 ERA in three career starts against Chicago. He will be opposed by left-hander Jon Lester, who was 13-8 with a 4.33 ERA in 32 starts last year and has a 1-2 record and 4.66 ERA in five career starts against the Marlins. Miami concluded 2017 with a 77-85 record and second-place finish in the National League East. The Marlins own an 11-14 record on Opening Day following last year s 4-2 loss to the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park. Miami is looking snap a three-game Opening Day slide, as its last OD win was on March 31, 2014 against Colorado (10-1). Today's contest will mark the 19th time in Franchise history that the Marlins have opened the season schedule at home, going 10-8 in those games. JUST GETTIN' STARTED José Ureña is making his first career Opening Day start, and will be the 16th different pitcher to start on Opening Day in Club history. He made his first Opening Day roster in 2017, as a member of the bullpen. When injuries created an opening in the rotation, he took advantage and did not look back. After Ureña entered the rotation on May 7, he proceeded to go 14-7 with a 3.97 ERA in 28 starts the rest of the way. From that date on, he led the National League in starts and tied Zack Greinke and Alex Wood for the second-most wins, behind Zach Davies (15). Among NL pitchers with at least 25 starts after May 7, Ureña's ERA ranked 10th, and his.232 average against ranked sixth. Miami won 17 of his 28 starts. OPENING ACTS Miami is batting.260 as a team on Opening Day, averaging 4.92 runs per game in season openers. The Club record for runs scored on Opening Day is 12 in a 2009 win over the Nationals at Sun Life Stadium. Miami has tallied 10+ runs on Opening Day three times in Franchise history; 12 in 2009 vs. Washington, 11 in 1998 vs. Cubs and 10 in 2014 vs. Colorado. The Club record for Opening Day hits is 14, done in 2014, 1998, and the Marlins' inaugural game in 1993. The pitchers have recorded a 3.67 ERA (225.2 ip/92 er) with 95 walks and 168 strikeouts all-time in Game One of the season. The most strikeouts recorded by a Marlins' team in a season opener is 11, done on April 6, 2004 vs. Montreal, followed by a 10-strikeout performance against Colorado in 2014. The Marlins have gone into extra frames in season openers twice (0-2), most recently in 2016's 11-inning opener against Detroit at Marlins Park. The only other extra-inning game on Opening Day was in 2001, when the Phillies and Marlins dueled for 13 innings. OPENING DAY ROSTER Miami set its Opening Day roster today, with 12 players making their first career OD roster. The Marlins will open the season with 12 pitchers, three catchers, six infielders and four outfielders. PITCHERS: Kyle Barraclough, Odrisamer Despaigne, LHP Jarlin García, Tayron Guerrero, LHP Chris O'Grady, LHP Dillon Peters, Caleb Smith, Drew Steckenrider, Junichi Tazawa, Jacob Turner, José Ureña, and Brad Ziegler. CATCHERS: Bryan Holaday, Tomás Telis, and Chad Wallach. IELDERS: Brian Anderson, Justin Bour, Starlin Castro, Garrett Cooper, Yadiel Rivera, and Miguel Rojas. OUTFIELDERS: Lewis Brinson, Derek Dietrich, Braxton Lee, and Cameron Maybin. The following players will begin the season on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26: LHP Wei-Yin Chen (left elbow strain), Elieser Hernandez (tooth infection), Dan Straily (right forearm strain), C J.T. Realmuto (low back contusion), Martín Prado (left hamstring strain), and JT Riddle (right shoulder tendinitis). Brett Graves (left oblique strain) will begin the season on the 60-day disabled list. LEADING THE CHARGE Manager Don Mattingly is entering his third campaign at the helm of the Marlins. In his second season with Miami, he led the team to a second-place finish in National League East with a 77-85 record. In his two seasons with the Marlins, Mattingly already ranks fifth on the club's all-time managerial wins list with 156, trailing Jack McKeon (281), Fredi González (276), Rene Lachemann (221), and John Boles (205). Since 2013, Mattingly (434 wins) is the fourth-winningest manager in the Majors, behind Joe Maddon (461), Mike Matheny (456), and Terry Franconoa (454). Mattingly owns a.531 (602-530) all-time mark in his seven-year career Major League manager. GRAPEFRUIT LEAGUE RECAP The Marlins wrapped up their 2018 Grapefruit League schedule on Sunday, finishing with a record of 15-13-3 on the Spring. They were sixth in the GL, behind Boston (21-9), Houston (20-9), Baltimore (17-12), St. Louis (17-12), and the Yankees (18-13). Lewis Brinson ranked fifth among qualified GL batters with a.328 average; while Starlin Castro (.321), Derek Dietrich (.370), Isaac Galloway (.389), Peter Mooney (.364), and JB Shuck (.364) all turned in solid Springs but did not qualify for the rankings. Brinson posted seven doubles, tied with four other players for second in the GL. Brian Anderson, who hit.275 with four homers and 11 RBI, finished tied for fifth in runs scored (13) and 10th in slugging (.588). Odrisamer Despaigne was third in innings pitched (24.0). SPRING BLOOM Miami drew 58,696 fans to 15 home dates at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter this spring. That total surpasssed 2017, in which the Marlins drew 58,449 to 18 home dates. It represents a 20.5% increase per game from 2017 to 2018. FOX Sports Florida carried six Marlins Spring Training contests, which saw its average viewership rise 25% over last spring. Additionally, Marlins Spring Training viewership on FOX Sports Florida grew by +42% among Hispanic households in the South Florida market. 62 JOSÉ UREÑA HT 6 3 WT 206 BATS RIGHT THROWS RIGHT MLB DEBUT APRIL 14, 2015 AT ATLANTA BIRTHPLACE SANTO DOMINGO, DR BORN SEPTEMBER 12, 1991 OPENING DAY AGE 26 CONTRACT STATUS SIGNED THROUGH 2018 ACQUIRED SIGNED AS INTERNATIONAL FREE AGENT ON AUGUST 29, 2008 José Ureña, who has made Miami s Opening Day roster for second consecutive season, is making first career OD start. Finished 2018 Grapefruit League season with 2-1 record and 6.10 ERA (10.1 ip/7 er) in five starts. Becomes seventh different OD starter in last seven openers for Miami. Last pitcher to make consecutive OD starts was Josh Johnson, who tossed three season openers from 2010-12. Posted team-high 14 wins last season, to go with 3.82 ERA (169.2/72) and 113 strikeouts in 34 appearances (28 starts). Established career highs in wins, appearances, innings pitched, strikeouts, and ERA. Finished season 14-7, 3.97 (154.1/68) as starter. Did not factor in a decision and had a 2.35 ERA (15.1/4) in six relief appearances. Went 6-1 with 2.40 ERA (63.2/17) in 11 day-game starts. Owned fourth lowest ERA among NL starters (min. 50.0 IP), behind Max Scherzer (1.90), Stephen Strasburg (2.06) and Jimmy Nelson (2.32). - Stats LLC From May 7 through end of season, led National League with 28 starts, and 14 wins in that time tied Zack Greinke and Alex Wood for second, behind only Zach Davies (15). Among NL pitchers who made at least 25 starts in that time, average against (.232) ranked sixth and ERA ranked 10th. Set career high with five-game winning streak over seven starts from May 23 to June 23. Did so despite posting a 4.58 ERA (37.1/19) in that time, as he received 7.47 runs of support during stretch. Tossed season-high 8.0 innings in loss on July 31 vs. Washington, and again in win on Sept. 20 vs. the Mets. Allowed just one run to Nationals, and two to New York. Became first Marlins pitcher since Henderson Alvarez (4), José Fernández (2), and Nathan Eovaldi (2) in 2014 to have multiple starts with 8.0-plus innings and two-orfewer runs allowed in a single season. Had streaks of seven starts with 5.0 innings and five starts with two-or-fewer walks snapped in his start on Aug. 28 at Washington (L, 4.0 ip, 3 bb). Bounced back in his next start by holding Philadelphia to one run over 7.0 innings on Sept. 3, in a 3-1 loss. Made 21 starts following a team loss, with a 12-5 record and 3.54 ERA. Only Marcus Stroman (25) had more such starts in the Majors, while Ureña s win total tied Jacob degrom for the MLB lead. Allowed five runs in 5.0 innings in his start on July 26 at Texas, but was the beneficiary of 11 runs of support while he was in the game, an eventual 22-10 victory for the Fish (club record for runs in a game). For the season, he received 5.91 runs of support in starts, which ranked sixth among NL starters (min. 28 GS). Suffered loss on July 31, when he tossed 8.0 innings and allowed just one run on three hits and a walk, with six strikeouts. It was just fourth time in Club history that a pitcher took a loss in a game in which he tossed at least 8.0 innings and allowed just three hits and two-or-fewer runs. Over career, has gone 18-20 with a 4.53 ERA (264.0/133) in 49 Major League starts. Has 33 career relief appearances with a 1-1 record, one save, and a 5.65 ERA (51.0/32).
