FISH BITES ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (47-24) RHP Lance Lynn (4-4, 3.07) vs. MIAMI MARLINS (30-43) RHP Dan Haren (6-4, 3.19) MARLINS PARK, MIAMI, FL Thursday, June 25, 2015 7:10 P.M. The Marlins look to avoid a three-game sweep at the hand of the Cardinals in the series finale tonight at 7:10 p.m. Miami sends RHP Dan Haren to the bump against the Club he debuted with in 2003; he is 4-2, 4.05 (46.2 ip/21 er) in seven career starts against the Redbirds, and has averaged 8.9 strikeouts/9.0 against them. St. Louis counters with righty Lance Lynn, who is returning from the disabled list to make this start. He is 3-0, 3.92 in five career appearances (three starts) against the Fish; his last three outings against them have been starts, and he has earned the win each time out. Miami is coming off a 1-4 road trip on which it visited the Yankees (0-2) and Reds (1-2). The Marlins also take on the Dodgers (June 26-28) and San Francisco (June 30-July 2) on this homestand. Tonight s National Anthem will be performed by First Baptist Church of Nashville Choir, and the ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Miami Dolphins running back Lamar Miller. TODAY S TRANSACTION The Marlins today designated RHP Vin Mazzaro for assignment and recalled from rehab and reinstated RHP Jarred Cosart from the 15-day disabled list (vertigo). VS. THE CARDINALS The Marlins have dropped the first two game of this three-game set to the Cardinals. Miami was 4-2 vs. the Cardinals last season, 2-1 at Marlins Park, and has won four of its last seven against the Redbirds. The Marlins are 68-100 all-time vs. the Cardinals, 32-52 at home (5-7 at Marlins Park). LAST NIGHT The Marlins got out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Giancarlo Stanton s 27 th home run of the season, but that was all the offense would muster in a 6-1 loss to the Redbirds. Mat Latos started and allowed just five runners to reach base on three hits and two walks over 7.0 innings, but all five would score - on home runs by Kolten Wong (two-run homer in the third) and Jason Heyward (three-run homer in the seventh). Stanton had the only multi-hit game for the Marlins, going 3x4, while Dee Gordon was 1x4 with his 25 th stolen base. NO JUNE SWOON HERE Giancarlo Stanton has 12 home runs this month, which is tied for the Club record for home runs in any month. Dan Uggla set the Franchise mark with 12 homers in May of 2008, and Stanton tied it in May of 2012. Stanton has five games left to break the Club record. He is tied with Albert Pujols for the most home runs in the Majors this month; the most home runs hit in a month this season was 13, by Bryce Harper in May. Stanton also ranks third in the Majors this month in RBI (23), behind Nolan Arenado and Pujols, who have 24. His.855 slugging percentage leads the Majors, ahead of Pujols (.815), and his.361 (30x83) batting average ranks fifth in the National League (12 th in Majors). COMFORTS OF HOME Giancarlo Stanton has a hit in all 11 home games this month, batting.447 (17x38) with two doubles, seven home runs, 16 RBI, a.533 on-base percentage, and a 1.053 slugging percentage in that time. He leads the National League in home runs, average, and slugging percentage at home this month; he is second in OBP, behind Joey Votto (.564), and third in RBI, behind Nolan Arenado (21) and Troy Tulowitzki (17). REELING EM IN ON HOME WATERS Miami s pitching staff has posted a 2.31 ERA (121.0 ip/31 er) over its last 13 games at Marlins Park, dating back to May 23, when the Fish snapped a nine-game home losing streak. The Club is 9-4 at home over that span. Prior to May 23, Miami had a 3.99 ERA (212/94) in 23 home games (8-15 team record), and had held opponents under two runs just twice. Since May 23, Miami s home ERA ranks third in the Majors, behind Pittsburgh (1.60) and St. Louis (1.75), while the Club s home winning percentage (.692) is fourth, behind St. Louis (.846/11-2), Pittsburgh (.800/12-3), and Toronto (.750/12-4). WELL AHEAD OF THE PACE Giancarlo Stanton hit his 27 th home run of the season last night in his 72 nd game. He is the fastest player in Club history to reach 27 home runs, beating out former leader Gary Sheffield (87 in 1994) by 15 games. The fastest players to 28 home runs in Club history were Cliff Floyd (2001) and Mike Lowell (2003), who did it in 93 games. - Elias FIRST-HALF MARKS IN PERIL With 17 games remaining before the All-Star break, Giancarlo Stanton has 27 home runs and 67 RBI. The Club record for home runs prior to the break is 28, by Mike Lowell in 2003, followed by Stanton this year. The record for RBI is 76, also by Lowell in 2003, with several players currently standing between Stanton and that mark. Also, Dee Gordon has 106 hits on the season; the Club record for the first half is 117, by Juan Pierre (2003) and Hanley Ramirez (2007). PENN-ING PERFECTION Three pitchers for Short-Season A Batavia combined to toss the third perfect game in New York-Penn League history last night in a 1-0 win over Mahoning Valley. Gabriel Castellanos started for the Muckdogs and struck out 12 over 7.0 innings. Miami s second-round pick in this year s First-Year Player Draft, lefty Brett Lilek, made his professional debut in the eighth inning and struck out all three batters he faced. Steven Farnworth sealed the perfection in the ninth to earn the save, striking out one batter.
