The 7th & 8th graders did a great job coming home with 4 Bronze, 3 Silver, and 3 Gold awards. SCOLIOSIS Please return the completed scoliosis sheet that was sent home in 2nd term report cards in January. If you have concerns, please contact your physician. AUTISM WEEK Student Leadership is sponsoring a DMS Autism Week running Monday, April 2nd - Friday April 6th. The week will include multiple events there will be a coin challenge all week during the lunch shifts. The Advisory that collects the most will receive an ice cream party. Student Leadership members are also selling Butter Braids. The money raised from the coin challenge and the sale of the Butter Braids will be dispersed amongst various groups and organizations, such as Ethan s Shining Light and Hodan Community Services to name a couple. We will be ending the week with Light It Up Blue Day on Friday, April 6th. Students and staff can show their support and wear blue. A picture will be taken on Friday during advisory.

LATEST FROM THE LIBRARY APRIL IS NATIONAL LIBRARIES MONTH! Join the LMC as we celebrate this year s National Library Month, with the theme Libraries Lead. The National Library Week 2018 celebration will mark the 60th anniversary of the first event, sponsored in 1958. Read more about National Library Week a t National Library Week History. Ms. Spady and Ms. Radosevich have fun activities planned for the DMS students. Trivia, contests, games, and prizes. Join us as we share how our LMC empowers our students! PEEPS SHOW AT THE LMC! Get out those delicious morsels of marshmallow and your imagination and submit a literary-themed diorama for our second annual Peeps Show! We ll have maker sessions each morning in the LMC during the week of April 9-13. We ll supply the Peeps, basic supplies, and boxes to help your creative process. Stop in at the LMC and pick up rules and an entry form. You can enter individually or as a team. Dioramas will be displayed in the LMC. Students and staff are encouraged to enter. Winners will be decided by a school-wide vote and will be announced May 1st. STATE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS COMPETITION RESULTS The Wisconsin State Battle of the Books Competition results are in! The DMS Team came in 15th out of the 144 teams that competed in the middle-level competition from all around the state. A big congratulations to our stellar team of Chloie Anderson, Johnathan Butteris, Seth Jenkins, and Isaac Olson! If you would like to compete next year, be sure to look out the list of titles to be released by WEMTA on June 1st. The list will be available in the DMS LMC and at the Dodgeville Public Library. APRIL BOOK DISPLAYS New Books - We ve got a lot of new books just itching to get out the door! Mysteries, historical fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels. Earth Day - Check out our collection of titles dedicated to conserving our planet. Autism Awareness - April is Autism Awareness Month and we ve picked some awesome books to bring autism awareness closer to our students. Spring Sports - Warmer weather brings spring sports. We ve got a great collection of soccer and baseball titles. Dewey Decimal of the Month: 636 Dogs We ve got some great books to help you choose a dog, train your dog, or just learn how to be a dog.

MUSIC NOTES DMS SUMMER MUSIC 2018 Dates: June 11-July 6 Summer Marching Band: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 8:30-9:30 Summer Jazz Band: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:40-10:30 In addition Drumline and Colorguard Clinics: Tuesday & Thursday 8:30-9:30 (June 12, 14, 19 & 21) All DMS band students currently in grades 6-8 should plan to attend the Summer Music Program at Dodgeville Middle School. Members of the drumline and colorguard are required to attend the clinic sessions listed above in addition to marching practices to learn cadences and routines. Any interested DMS and DHS students are invited to participate in the Dodgeville Summer Jazz Band. Community service hours are awarded for HS students helping with the program! Cost of T-shirt is $8 and checks should be made payable to Dodgeville Middle School. All T-shirt orders must be prepaid. Participants in the Summer Music Program have opportunities to earn coupons towards A FINAL prize drawing to be held at a picnic lunch celebration provided by the Music Boosters on Friday, July 6 th here at DMS. Students earn coupons when they Attend rehearsal or clinic (marching band and/or jazz band) Attend a lesson as scheduled with an instructor Practice 1 coupon for 30 minutes of practice March in a parade or perform in a jazz concert. Parades are July 4 th in Mineral Point, and July 8 th in Dodgeville. Students will be learning to play our new fall marching tune. The Jazz Concert will be at 6:00 on Friday, July 6 th in the DMS cafeteria. Students currently in 6 th and 7 th grade should also plan to march on Sunday, Sept. 2nd in the Ridgeway Labor Day Parade. Marching Band is a fun summer activity and marching in parades provides a great service to our community! Uniforms for summer music performances include Summer Music T-shirt, solid-color dark shorts of your choice with white tennis shoes/athletic shoes and short white crew socks. Individual lessons on M, W or F will be between 11:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on a first come-first served basis. You may make appointments for lessons in advance by calling 935-3307, ext. 3054. 7TH & 8TH GRADE BAND AND CHOIR Students in 7th/8th Grade Band and Choir have an "In-School" performance at DMS and an Exchange Concert with Wisconsin Heights Middle School on Friday, April 20th before heading to Kalahari for some fun at either the Waterpark or Amusement Park. Students should have confirmed their park choices and returned permission slips and health forms to travel with the band and choir. IT S NEVER TOO LATE TO JOIN BAND If you would like to join band as a 6th or 7th grade, please register for our Dodgeville Summer Music Program. Lessons are offered for students to get started. You may also attend our beginning band parent information meeting on Thursday, April 5th at 7:00 p.m. Students are welcome to attend with parents. A representative from Ward Brodt music will discuss the process of renting or purchasing an instrument. Families with instruments may bring them to have them checked for suitability and play condition. There will be sheets to sign-up for an appointment for mouthpiece testing. Students will try their choice of instruments after school on April 24th or 26th. Please complete registration for summer music if you have a child interested in joining band. SOLO AND ENSEMBLE Congratulations to all DMS students who performed at Solo and Ensemble Festival in Lancaster on Saturday, March 3rd. Of 49 events entered; 39 received a 1 rating! Special recognition to Maya Kramer, Mia Patterson and Megan Decker who performed a most difficult Class A event. Megan received a 1* and will be performing at State Solo and Ensemble on April 28th at UW-Platteville. SUMMER MUSIC CAMP SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS The Dodgeville Music Boosters offer scholarships for all music students. Take advantage of an opportunity to spend a week at one of many college-sponsored camps this summer! Applications are due by May 11h. Ask a music teacher for an application and list of camps and prices. The amount of the scholarship depends on the number of people who apply. Scholarships will be awarded at the Music Boosters Awards Night on Tuesday, May 29th. WHAT IS SmartMusic? Our DMS band students have the opportunity to work with SmartMusic in their lessons. SmartMusic is music software online that is available through a subscription. It is used in lessons as a tool for practice and evaluation. Students can see their music on the computer screen and play their part into a microphone. The program shows notes that they played correct, notes they missed and reflects their performance with a percentage scoring. Students may play concert music, exercises from their lesson books, scales and solo literature. If you are interested in having SmartMusic to use at home, you can find information at SmartMusic.com and download it to your computer. Your child can begin using this program for more music-making at home! Students will have unlimited access to the world s largest accompaniment library for all ages and skill levels, which includes thousands of pieces of music!

On Thursday, April 12th a statewide tornado drill is planned. At 1:00 p.m. the National Weather Service will issue a statewide mock tornado watch and at 1:45 p.m. a statewide mock tornado warning. This is an ideal opportunity for schools, businesses and families to practice safe procedures for severe weather.
