Sheddies Chatter The Men s Shed (North Shore) Trust March 2018 Welcome to the March 2018 Edition of Sheddies Chatter. Been a busy month this month. We were lucky enough to get a week away on holiday and I had a great time meeting members of the Morrinsville Menzshed, as well as talking to member Norm Fasher about his unusual invention. The downside is, I haven t spent much time at The Shed and I m getting withdrawal symptoms, so I hope to remedy that very soon. Happy Shedding. Roger Curl, Editor Ph: 027 264 1932 editor@mensshednorthshore.org.nz Around The Shed Progress is being made on several fronts including the building of the new deck outside the lunch room and the clean-up, flooring and installation of further racking under the tennis club. The insulating and lining the Electronics Workshop is progressing well thanks to Frank and Russell and their helpers. The new CCTV system is being installed and production is continuing on many projects in the wood working shop. The waste extraction ducting system recently became blocked due possibly to a thicknesser being set too deeply and with damp wood. To alleviate the possibility of further blockages, members will be encouraged to set the thicknessers to cut only a few millimetres at a time. Community Projects - Can You Help? Menzshed Morrinsville With an hour or so to kill in Morrinsville recently, (It s a long story!) I thought I d see if I could check out the Morrinsville Menzshed. It s located on Thames St, the main road into Morrinsville. I poked my head into the front door and was greeted by Pete Smith, the secretary. I had no sooner introduced myself and I was whisked into the lunchroom for a cup of tea with the guys, and after 5 minutes, I felt as if I had known them for ages. We swapped stories and compared our sheds and interests. The Morrinsville Shed is well equipped and has 32 members. They have several projects on the go including repairing pallets for a local block making company, repairing furniture and doing community projects. They recently made a Santa sleigh with Santa s workshop at the back. It had an area for kids dressed as elves to work while smoke was emitted from the workshop machinery. One of the guys was making a logo for the local Rotary Club from an old sand casting pattern, while others were repairing furniture. They are about to concrete an area at the back so they can add an engineering section. The Shed is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays and they are hoping to soon be able to open on Saturdays. If you re ever down that way, pop in and say hi, I know you ll be made most welcome. Roger Curl, Editor 4
What I do - Norm Fasher For some time now, member Norm Fasher has been developing a new type of musical instrument. It is basically a large trumpet type mouthpiece connected to a series of tubes and valves to produce a very unique sound. After much experimentation, Norm has developed prototypes, parts of which he has printed on his own 3D printer. Norm created the 3D models on his computer using 3D modelling software. He invited me to his house where he demonstrated his invention and showed me the patterns he is creating so he can mould parts for it. Norm has previously played in brass bands and taught classes. Many thanks to Norm for taking the time to show me his invention. It ll be interesting to hear the final result. Watch this space! Tools for Schools A group of Rotarians recently put their weight behind the Tools for Schools project, turning up to load another container of school furniture and Tools for Schools. 16 woodworking tool kits and 12 mechanical tool kits (enough to set up about 4 colleges) were assembled and sent along with various power tools, electric motors and other bits and pieces most of which were donated by various Men s Sheds around NZ. The container will be on its way to the Rotary Club of Taveuni (Fiji) next week. Thanks everyone for the generous donations of stuff, time and space; take the rest of the week off!
