COB VETTE NEWS Since 1981 Volume 37 Issue 07 July 2018 Notes from the President As I write this article our Annual car Show was canceled for June 27. A rescheduled date will be chosen in the near future. Of course we will be promoting the show with a revised flyer as well as on our website and Facebook page. Thank you John Heffernan for arranging the Memorial Day Parade for COB club members. I believe we had 32 cars in attendance. I also would like to thank the club members who attended the meet and greet and dinners for the Museum in Motion Explore Buffalo hosted locally by members Lou & Roseanna Merzacco. Lou appreciated the turnout by the members. It was a big hit with the 75 attendees that traveled to WNY, many for the first time. Several said they will return for the next MIM in 2020. Mark your calendars for a few events in July including the 4th of July Parade on Grand Island, the NCCC convention in New Orleans, the Rochester Corvette Car Show, and Vettes at the Beach in Syracuse. In addition, there are several cruise nights in WNY including a new one on Thursday night at the Anchor Bar located on Maple Road and Sweet Home Road in Amherst. Hope to see you soon at an upcoming event. What s Happening This Month See page three. The new Newsletter Editor My name is Larry Dudeck and I am pleased to be the new editor of the club newsletter. I must admit my first look at the process left me a bit overwhelmed. But after spending time with Dennis Buckley, I realized all the hard work and effort has already been done by him for me. The past efforts of Dennis made the transition practically effortless. Dennis, I thank you. That being said, the newsletter is, first and foremost, your newsletter. Without your articles and photos, it wouldn t be much of a newsletter. So keep those photos and letters coming. Please remember photos without some accompanying text are nowhere as interesting as they could be. As usual, your info is needed by the 27 th of the month prior to publication. Prospective Member Article What s a decade? We were COB members until the late spring of 2008. We sold our C4 Red convertible. By Christmas of that year, I was working in North Carolina usually coming home on Thursday and leaving on Monday. With that pace, the time literally flew by, no pun intended. No time for any clubs. Flip to Fall of 2017, with only a distant thought of owning a Corvette something amazing happened. An ad popped up on my smart phone and there it was a beautiful C5 Yellow Corvette. I didn t know that it was a Z 06 until I actually saw the Vette. I just fell in love with the notch back roof kind of reminiscent of the 60 s hardtop/convertible Vettes. After looking around, under, and through the Vette, I took it for a 1 ½ hour test drive. OMG was I sold! It is a very impressive vehicle. I couldn t wait to tell Karen about this unusual find. There s history, as with any Vette. Suffice to say, a collector had it. We purchased our Vette in November but due to our Buffalo weather, we were not able to bring/drive her home until mid-january. This is the time of year we leave for several months to Florida. There was a break in the weather and we were able to drive our Vette home, without snow/salt. A few days later, we jumped into our RV and headed south. What an interesting winter season. The first thing we did when we purchased our Vette was to contact Skip and Maureen. We asked if we could be prospective members with COB and he said that he would be happy to sponsor us. We attended the annual Christmas party and met up with many friends and fellow COB members. They say it s about the car but we know and believe that it s the members that are the life of any club. This is especially true of COB. Even though we have been away for 10 years, it seems like yesterday that we were enjoying wonderful fellowship with COB members. There are many new members since 2008, but we were made to feel part of the COB family the moment we walked in to the Christmas Party and then again at our COB January meeting. Truly we felt that we never left, definitely not 10 years! Members from 2008 remembered our C4 and the events we attended. Several members expressed the fun they had at our house after a COB event held at the Woodlawn Volunteer Fire hall. A decade, 10 years.as they say it s only a number and with being a part of COB that number will always be number 1. Keep on keeping on, 7

WILLIAMSVILLE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE Once again COB participated in the Williamsville Memorial Day Parade. This is always a fun event for the Club. We had 32 corvettes parading in rows of three with the first two rows being Red White and Blue. COB is a major unit in the parade and a crowd pleaser. After the parade COB joined in the fun at the After Party held for parade participants hosted by the Lamm American Legion Post and the Amherst VFW. 15

Cars & Coffee @ Paula s Donuts We had a great turn out for the Cars and Coffee at Paula s doughnuts at Southgate plaza with 16 corvettes to enjoy the morning. Thank you to all who came out. Now who in our club will do the next cars and coffee at a coffee shop near them? Mike Buccilli 22

Real hot C4 The Targa top, looking at what has become the head liner. I have a 1985 C4 with the Targa top. I m generally pleased with the car but there is one area that I m not. That is just how hot the cabin can get on a hot, sunny day. The glass top is a very dark gray, almost black in color. But still, on a bright, sunny day, the top passes enough sun light to make the interior uncomfortably warm. This is especially noticeable when stopped a traffic light. And if parked, the cabin will feel like an oven if the car sits for any length of time. I decided to do something about the problem. I thought if I attached to the inner surface of the top one those reflective shields (that we normally put against the windshield to reflect sun light) it would keep the cabin much cooler. So I bought one of the folding windscreen sun shields and went to work. I first removed the top and thoroughly cleaned the inner surface. I then cut the reflective shield to the shape of the inner top surface and held it in place with 12 pieces of 1 long Velcro tape. Finally, I finished the cut edge with black electrical tape. I put the top back on and tried it. I was amazed just how much cooler the cabin is. An extra benefit is a bit of noise reduction due to the foam backing of the reflective material. From the outside, the change is practically invisible; the reflective material isn t seen unless you get very close. The cost to do this was $3.50 for the shield, $1.50 for a piece of hook and loop Velcro and about one hour of time. Larry Dudeck 23
