Mission Statement The mission of the Blue Springs South Volleyball Program is to teach its members life lessons and values through the discipline and rigors of becoming a better volleyball player and teammate. Our vision is to provide opportunities for student-athletes to develop their skills and experience the great game of volleyball. We aim to do this by providing them an organized, structured, and unique team experience, with each individual member molded to the goal of making the team as excellent as possible. To, Parent/Player In our program, bench time is playing time. If you still have concerns regarding playing time. Typical volleyball roster of 12 = 50% of team is not on the court at any given time. Football roster of 53 = 79% of team is not on the field at any given time. Basketball roster of 15 = 67% of team is not on the court at any given time. Let me relay a few tidbits about a guy named Josh Pastner who is the head men s basketball coach at the University of Memphis. Pastner was part of the 1997 NCAA National Championship University of Arizona Wildcats basketball team. Pastner never started a game, never saw one second of playing time in the championships, played a total of 98 minutes over the course of a college career, and yet was given a full scholarship his final three years as a walk on by the Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson. Pastner was named co-captain of the 1999 Wildcats team and Pastner played in 42 games as a Wildcat. He finished his career with an average of 0.9 points per game, but the Wildcats were 42-0 in the games in which he appeared. Despite his lack of playing time, Pastner s presence in the Arizona program was of great value to the success and chemistry of the team. He performed many of the behind-the-scenes tasks that helped the team win the 1997 NCAA Championship and two Pac-10 titles (1998, 2000). Pastner helped evaluate game video and scout opponents, and he was a willing ball retriever and encourager for many of the Wildcats players who wanted extra practice in the gym. I am not suggesting behind-the-scenes work is your future. I do suggest you do the best with the hand you ve been dealt and expect good things to happen. Stay focused, work hard over the long haul, and continue to bring value to the team. You might be amazed how far that can take you. Ask Mister 0.9 points per game Josh Pastner. Ganas Desire, urge; from the Spanish verb ganar, to win or gain. The term was popularized among English speakers by the LA mathematics teacher Jaime Escalante as played by Edward James Olmos in the movie Stand and Deliver. You re going to work harder here than you ve ever worked anywhere else. And the only thing I ask from you is ganas. Desire. If you don t have the ganas, I will give it to you, because I m an expert. (from Stand and Deliver) *The more you sweat in practice, the less you bleed in battle. -Author Unknown
Equipment Athletes will be issued uniform tops and possibly other equipment as well. Players are responsible to return these items at the conclusion of the season or fines will be assessed by the school. Athletes are expected to care for uniforms and replace at cost value when equipment is lost or damaged. All uniforms are to be washed in COLD only and SHOULD NOT be placed in the dryer, ONLY AIR DRY any spandex materials. This season the player will be responsible to provide their own shoes, knee-pads, ankle braces, and black compression shorts. If for any reason the player can not obtain these items, please talk to a coach. The coaching staff does expect the team to dress uniformly (same socks/etc). Pre-Game Meals (TBA) 9 th grade team will most likely eat as a team before home and away matches in the FC cafeteria. We want the girls to stay at school, eat as a team, work on homework and avoid getting in their cars to drive around town on game days. Organization of the team meals and payments will be made through the booster club. This season the JV/V players will not always eat as a team after school but will on occasion. On away game days there will be an assigned time for the athletes to report to school on both home and away game days. An athlete who is late for this assigned time may be assigned extra running or other consequences including but not limited to lack of playing time for the night s match. After the Games All athletes are expected to ride the bus home from Varsity, JV, and freshmen matches. Only pre-excused players with extreme circumstances will be allowed to check out. Players will be dismissed by the coaching staff from the gym after everything is off of the bus and put away appropriately. Players will not be dismissed from home matches until dismissed by the coaching staff as a group and after all equipment has been put away. At both home and away matches, the varsity and JV players will be expected to go directly to the locker-room after the varsity match and not visit with friends or family until dismissed by the staff. JV players are expected to sit together as a team for the varsity match. Varsity players will also sit together as a team for a portion of the JV match. In the event that it is absolutely necessary for an athlete to ride home with either their parent or another student-athletes parent then prior approval is necessary from high school administration as well as the team s coach. Please see school s athletic hand book for further clarification on administrative approval.
Booster Club This is a public school program but for us to compete at a high level we need assistance beyond that which the district can provide. All parents of players placed on a volleyball team at Blue Springs South are expected to contribute to the booster club. The booster club exists for the purpose of 1) supporting the volleyball program, and 2) as an organization tool to assist parents with managing their parental and team responsibilities. Parental responsibilities related to having a daughter be a part of the volleyball program at Blue Springs South include but are not limited to; line judging, feeding your child on game days, food for tournaments, team gifts, banquette plans, Dig Pink, and other team activities.
Practice Expectations 1. Report to all practices on time. Practice will begin at 2:30 sharply every day unless otherwise noted. 2. Practice clothes: Only BSS Shirts a. Black/Navy/Royal shorts only unless permission from coach. b. Wear Knee pads on knees at all times. 3. No Jewelry for in-season practices! 4. No cell phones: JV/V team will lock away all personal belongings in the locker room daily. No cell phone use (texting/tweeting/social networking) during team activities. 5. Each player should have their own LARGE water bottle, we will only take 60-90 second water breaks and standing in line at the water fountain isn t an option. We want to maximize reps and touches in practice. Players are responsible for their own water-bottles. Parents, please encourage your daughters to get their own water on game days. 6. If a player is absent from school and/or leaves school early due to illness please let the coach know if possible. The coaches email contact is accessible on the coaches bio pages of the team website. www.bluespringssouthvolleyball.com
Team Rule Never put yourself, your team, or the program in an unfavorable position.
Jaguar Volleyball Attendance Policy Excused absence from practice Absence from practice for a serious illness, death in the family, or other coach-approved reason will be excused. It is the player s responsibility to let the coach know about the absence and make up the missed work. The player will be expected to make up the physical exercise and skills practice from the practice missed. Unexcused Absence from Practice Any unexcused absence from practice will result in the player running two miles, plus any other conditioning missed. The team is counting on all players to be at practice everyday. When you are absent, the team suffers. 1 st offense: Possibility of missing one match. 2 nd offense: Two game suspension (determined by coach). 3 rd offense: Dismissal from the team (determined by coach). College Visits Missing practice or matches for a college visit is considered an unexcused absence. If an athlete is making a college visit in regards to a college Volleyball opportunity (official visit), then absences will typically take place during Friday practices and with coaches approval well in advance of the absence.
