AMA CHARTER CLUB #397 NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS SEPTEMBER, 2016 Hi all, it s time to start thinking of our winter projects. Where does time go; summer is just about gone. Although fall has some good flying days, it leads to my least favorite season WINTER. I still don t like it!!! By the time you read this, we may have the gravel under our new start stands. Our friends at the Forest Preserve will do the work!! As I write this, I don t know if the new pilot s stations will be put in at the same time; we ll find out. I have asked that the grass at the field be cut lower so we can taxi out to the runway without difficulty further into the week. The ground crew has informed us that their lawnmower will be repaired so the field will be cut at one level. We have had kind of a slow training season, and it is coming to an end. We will be providing training on Tuesday and Thursday until the end of the month. After that, we will do training during the afternoon on the same days. This will continue until it gets too cold. I asked all of you at the last meeting to let the Board know what you would like to see at the Christmas auction!!! Please do this at our September meeting. Also, we would like to know what winter activities you would like to see at our meetings: build projects, how to s, radio programming or whatever you might like. Remember, we now have indoor flying at Naperville Yard on Monday and Wednesday from 12:00 till 3:00 PM. Cost is $8.00. Come and join us. Call first at Naperville Yard 1-630-245-1100 to make sure the field is available. Lastly, let us all remember what happened 15 years ago to our country, and how it changed all our lives. And to all who lost their lives. We need to thank all of our Service members who keep us free and safe. God Bless America! Fly Safe, PRES Tommy

Fun Fly Committee A Busy August Weekend Just before this weekend started Tommy picked up the wood for the new model work stations. By the time you read this in early September the tables may already be built. Westmont Cruisin Night August 11 th,, see report below. On Saturday, August 13 th, which was National Model Aviation day, the club participated with a display on the Naperville River Walk. Bruce Haynes, Dave Carlson, Al Spencer, and Jeff Gittelman displayed helicopters, quadcopters, a biplane, a jet, and prop warbirds. A lot of people stopped by and although the 6+ banjos and guitars behind us made quite a racket we had a good time and educated a number of people about our favorite hobby. In conjunction with the display, we held a try to fly event at the field. Thanks to Tom Camp, Mick Pfeifer, Larry Dudkowski, Dave Engel and Jim Farina for putting on that event. Then on Sunday August 14 th we held Qualification Sunday. It was sunny (hot) with very little wind. Qualifying that day were Tom Camp, Scott Lundin, Dave Engel, Hank Bourassa, John Andrews and Mick Pfeifer as Experts, Jim Farina as Novice, Harold Finch as Advanced, and Mark Froelich Beginner & Novice. Some modifications were made to the Pilot Proficiency Checklist the new version is included with this newsletter. Fly Safe! Jeff Gittelman Westmont Cruisin Nights Review August 11 th. Originally scheduled for July 21 st, the display and demo was postponed 3 weeks due to an Excessive Heat Warning. August 11 th turned out to be much the same but without the E-H-W. And then Mommy Nature threw in some dark threatening skies and high winds late in the afternoon. Not more than a sprinkle was felt, and the event got off to a slow start. Members from Palos R/C Flying Club, Prop Masters R/C Aero Club, and Woodland Aero Modelers were in attendance. EAA 461 was unable to attend at the last minute. By early evening the skies cleared, the winds died, the street was full of cars and teaming with spectators. Several pilots took to the skies and soon declared air superiority over the Manning Lot in downtown Westmont. Notable spectators included Westmont Chief of Police Tom Mulhearn, and Village Manager Stephen May. Joe Gavenda (Palos) did some aerial photography with a multi-rotor. Dave Carlson (Prop Masters) demonstrated small helicopters such as his Blade. Hank Bourassa (Prop Masters) showed the spectators his ability to do 3-D with a heli. And Tony Mataitis (Woodland) flopped around in 3-D fashion with his large foamie, including how to land without a battery pack! Herb Kilian (Palos) showed the real thing with his full scale 60ft wingspan glider. When he wasn t explaining cross-country flying, he was letting kids sit in the cockpit and work the controls. Steve McCarty (Palos) had a Piper Pawnee on display which was perfect to explain getting Herb s glider into the air. The most sophisticated and expensive glider ever built was displayed in model form. Joe Felonk (Palos) brought his turbine powered Space Shuttle. Meanwhile, Jim Fox and Bill Brzostowski (both Woodland) were assisting future pilots on the two flight simulators. The event concluded in the twilight with another sensational 3-D helicopter performance by Hank Bourassa. As last year, he brought his LED enhanced heli and did a routine in the darkness choreographed to high energy stadium rock music Get Ready for This.

Fun Fly Committee The purpose of the event was to introduce to, and shed a positive light on model aviation. Judging by the response, we ve achieved that goal. Thanks to all for attending. Dennis Miendersma, Palos R/C Flying Club National Model Aviation Day August 13 th. Static Demo at the Naperville River Walk

Fun Fly Committee Try and Fly at the Field

Fun Fly Committee Additional New Start-up Benches If you ve been out to the field, we re sure that you ve noticed the three new Start-up benches that have been added. Construction crew Finished Benches Listed below are the blast emails sent out in August regarding a new indoor flying site in Naperville Quest for an Indoor R/C Flying Site Listed below is a string of Blast emails sent out regarding our efforts to arrange for an indoor flying site: Prop Masters R/C Aero Club has arranged with Players Indoor Sports Center for indoor flying of small electric planes and quadcoptors. Players has three indoor fields measuring 100 x 200 - check out their website at www.playersindoor.com. They are located at 1740 West Quincy Avenue, Naperville IL 60540. The details on which days the facility will be available are still to be worked out, but it will be on one or two weekdays (Mon-Tue-Wed-Thu) and from 12:00PM to 3:00PM. If we are able to generate sufficient regular interest the price will be $8.00 per pilot for the three hours. In order to introduce you to Players, management is offering an introductory day to fly for $5.00 on Friday 8/26 from 12:00PM to 3:00PM. You must register on their website in order to fly this cannot be done in person. Click on the box About. From the menu select Waiver and complete the form using Activity with $-0- registration, and special event. If you have any questions please contact Jeff Gittelman at jgittelman@yahoo.com or Tom Camp at camptom@wowway.com. We hope to see you on August 26th!!!! Jeff Gittelman & Tom Camp

Fun Fly Committee REVISED 8-26-2016!!!! INDOOR RADIO CONTROL FLYING IN NAPERVILLE!!! Today we had our first indoor event at Players Indoor Sports. It s a nice facility and the staff is very helpful. But we found that the size of the netting led to many planes hanging up after hitting the net. Also the 24 ceiling net was a problem for some 3D maneuvers. Therefore Prop Masters met with Naperville Yard, 1607 Legacy Circle, Naperville IL 60564 [630-245-1100] to seek an alternate arrangement. You ll find their 45+ foot ceiling, a great deal of natural lighting, and different netting very attractive. They will provide us with a 150 x 105 field. Their website is www.napervilleyard.com. We will continue flying on Monday and Wednesdays from 12:00PM-3:00PM for $8.00 per pilot beginning August 29th. You will need to sign a liability waiver when you come to fly, and initially you should call in the morning on the day you want to fly to confirm if the field will available. We regret any inconvenience this venue change causes but believe you will really enjoy the Naperville Yard. If you have any questions please contact Jeff Gittelman at jgittelman@yahoo.com or Tom Camp at camptom@wowway.com. We hope to see you on August 29th!!!! Jeff & Tom

Fun Fly Committee Fast-N-Slow This month s Fun-Fly will be the FAST-N-SLOW. The event will be held on Sunday October 2 nd with a Rain Date of October 9th. The event will be postponed if the weather forecast is for rain, North/South winds greater than 10 mph or East/West winds greater than 15 mph. Please sign in when you arrive. Competition will start as soon as pilots are ready, approximately 10:00am, with practice before and open flying afterwards. Here s how it works. The object of this event is to have the greatest speed differential between how fast and how slow your model will fly. You will first make one level pass across the field boundaries followed by a second pass in the same direction. The first pass will be the FAST pass; the second pass will be the SLOW pass. The model will be timed and the MPG computed from a time/mph chart. The winner will be the largest speed differential between the fast and the slow speed. The second largest, second place and so on for each of the pilot classes. Here are the rules. Each pilot must make both passes in the same direction, either East to West or West to East. The model must make a LEVEL pass, neither climbing nor diving as it crosses the start and stop markers. No maneuvers are allowed, especially during the slow pass. The nose of the aircraft must remain parallel to the ground. No 3-D or High Alpha maneuvers are allowed. Flaps, flaperons and/or retracts may be used during the slow pass. Points: Finish points will be awarded for each pilot class for the first through fifth finishers. Ten attendance and 10 participation point will be awarded. In addition, an additional 10 points will be awarded for pilots achieving a spot landing in center circle on runway or 5 points at the X at either end of the runway.
