All riders competing today were subject to alcohol breath test analysis and a random number of riders were subject to urine testing. Kevin Forrester was fined the sum of $200 under the provisions of AR120(b) for failing to fulfil his engagement in Race 2 due to being late on course. Race 1 - Optus Shop Warrnambool Maiden - 1400 metres: The start of this race was delayed due to an injured clerk of the course horse blocking other horses from being able to leave the stabling area to enter the mounting yard. Sadlers River - late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 8.40am. Timor Gold - commenced awkwardly and shifted in. Passing the 400m shifted in and away from Cape Sounion and as a result became unbalanced. Led and was under pressure from the 500m before being eased down. Rider Melissa Julius reported that the gelding, which was having its first race start, raced greenly throughout and in her opinion was not suited by todays heavy track conditions. Rowdy Rousey - slow to begin before being hampered by Timor Gold that shifted in. Settled at the rear of the field, tactics and performance queried; rider Linda Meech stated that after beginning fairly and receiving a bump on jumping away, the filly was reluctant to stretch out for the majority of the event. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Sir Chatalot - Laid out rounding the home turn and in the straight. Cape Sounion - performed below market expectations (placed third, $1.90 favourite); rider Andrew Mallyon stated the gelding did not handle todays heavy track conditions. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample was taken for analysis. Race 2 - idetect Maiden Plate - 1700 metres: Babbage - slow to begin. Mecheemi - commenced awkwardly and lost ground. Gold Kroner - commenced awkwardly. Raced wide without cover. Celestial Jewel - shifted in on jumping away. Restrained in the early stages when attempting to obtain cover. Rider Ryan Maloney reported the mare hung in throughout and was under pressure from the 600m. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a throat abnormality and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
Champagne Nights - over-raced in the early stages. Rider Jordan Childs was of the opinion his mount did not handle todays heavy track conditions. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Option - got its head up in the early stages when being restrained to obtain cover. Passing the 400m had to be checked when tightened for room between Kalaru Girl that shifted out marginally, and Mecheemi that had obtained a neat run to the inside of Gold Kroner which shifted in slightly. As Stewards could not attribute blame to any one rider no action was taken. Bedroucho - passing the 1400m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Celestial Jewel that was being restrained to obtain cover. When questioned regarding the improved performance today, trainer Nathan Dunn explained he had freshened the gelding up after dropping it back in distance from 2100m to todays 1700m. Nathan Dunn added the gelding was suited by the heavy track conditions and responded to the change in gear, that being the addition of a visor to keep the horse focused. Euroman (GB) - raced four wide without cover. Youl Beatem - settled outside the leader and further forward; when questioned rider Patrick Moloney stated it was not the intention for the gelding to settle as far forward as he did, however after beginning well from the wide draw and with the step up in distance he was left with no other option. Kalaru Girl - left the course within the compulsory thirty minute threshold after the running of race. Trainer Mick Bell was fined $200 under the provisions of AR117(3) and directed to return the mare to the course. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Race 3 - Winning Edge Presentations SV 3YO Maiden Plate - 1700 metres: Bit Of A Lad - slow to begin (two lengths). Laid in under pressure in the straight. Cherokee (NZ) - restrained from the start. Choix Belle - shifted in on jumping and bumped Paradise Cove (USA). Passing the 1400m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Patriot Day that shifted in after being carried in by Chinese Dynasty (NZ). Approaching the 400m was hampered when tightened between Bit Of A Lad and Perceptionist, that shifted in when weakening. Paradise Cove (USA) - bumped at the start. Passing the 500m was inconvenienced and carried wide by Mille The Missile that shifted out. Raced four wide without cover. Tang Dynasty - over-raced in the early stages. Perceptionist - over-raced in the early and middle stages. Raced wide without cover.
Flag Time - led, tactics queried; rider Craig Williams stated he was instructed to ride further back however after jumping well and mustering good early pace, he elected to use this to his advantage to go where he thought was the better part of the track. Millie The Missile - performed below market expectations; rider Damian Lane was of the opinion his mount didnt handle todays heavy track conditions. Race 4 - Bottle-O Warrnambool BM70 Handicap - 1400 metres: Pacodali (IRE) - reared as the start was effected and lost ground (three lengths). Over-raced in the early stages. Held up between the 600m and the 400m before shifting in to obtain clear running. Our Elliott (NZ) - slow to begin. Wannon Warrior - settled outside the leader and was eased down in the straight, performance queried; rider Andrew Mallyon was of the opinion his mount was at the end of its preparation. Race 5 - Decron Maiden Hurdle - 3200 metres: Correct weight was delayed to ascertain whether Cable Bay (NZ) had raced inside the pegs near the 1400m. It was established that the gelding had jumped marker pegs, and as no advantage was gained correct weight was declared. McNulty - trainer Mick Bell was severely reprimanded for presenting the gelding late on course. Jumped the third obstacle awkwardly. Arties Gold - slow to begin. Severely checked by the fallen Abebe (NZ) after the tenth hurdle and was brought down and this incident will be referred to the Jumps Review Panel. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Cable Bay (NZ) - over-raced through the early and middle stages. Jumped the fourth obstacle awkwardly. Passing the 1400m, when trailing the leader, jumped marker pegs and became unbalanced. Rider Darryl Horner Jnr reported the gelding, which was pulling hard, laid in and contacted two marker pegs. Something To Share - jumped the second hurdle awkwardly. Approaching and after jumping the last hurdle raced in restricted room between Cable Bay (NZ) and Black Tie (NZ). Bring Back - jumped the sixth obstacle awkwardly. Made a faulty jump at the eighth obstacle and fell and as a result suffered a serious racing injury and was subsequently humanely euthanised and the incident will be referred to the Jumps Review Panel. Pentomatic (NZ) - after jumping the seventh obstacle was eased out of the event. Rider Steven Pateman stated the gelding jumped poorly throughout, didnt feel right in its action and may have choked down. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be sore behind and will require Abebe (NZ) - made a faulty jump at the tenth hurdle, knuckled on landing and fell. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities and the gelding will be referred to the Jumps Review Panel for assessment. Martong - after clearing the tenth obstacle was severely checked by fallen runners and taken wide on the course. Berning Desire - eased down over the concluding stages. Rider Jamie Mott stated that the gelding travelled well throughout the event however failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure. Honey Steels Gold - after negotiating the second obstacle had to be checked off the heels of Arch Fire (USA). Jumped the eighth obstacle awkwardly. Renew (IRE) - approaching the tenth obstacle shifted out abruptly. Tremec - knuckled on landing after negotiating the tenth obstacle unbalancing rider Arron Lynch. Jumped the last hurdle awkwardly. Angelology (NZ) - settled at the rear; when questioned, rider Steven Pateman stated he was instructed to ride the gelding back in the field to enable it to settle before putting his mount into the race which is consistent in the way the gelding has been ridden recently. Private Baldrick - slow to begin. Toffatin - commenced awkwardly. Raced keenly in the middle stages. Simply Splashing - restrained from the start. Delightful Cat - over-raced in the early stages. Havadash - near the 1100m bumped and taken in off its course by Delightful Cat that was over-racing. Held up from the 400m until the 250m. Zimzala - raced fiercely through the early stages and passing the 1000m, when continuing to race fiercely, shifted in marginally before being checked off the heels of Delightful Cat which was being restrained when over racing. The colt then shifted in abruptly severely checking Zolani that in turn shifted in severely checking Almas Rossa and The Rich Fisher. The stable of trainer Mr Mick Price were advised that a warning will be placed on the colts record for its racing manners. The Rich Fisher - near the 1000m checked to avoid the heels of Almas Rossa that shifted in after meeting with interference. Almas Rossa - approaching the 1000m was severely checked to avoid the heels of Zolani that met with interference. Zolani - approaching the 1000m was severely checked by Zimzala that shifted in abruptly when racing fiercely. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Race 8 - Midfield Group Wangoom Handicap (Listed) - 1200 metres: Jungle Edge - after being loaded in its starting stall lunged at the gates and broke through the front; underwent a veterinary examination that revealed a minor abrasion to the lower gum and was passed suitable to race. Raced wide without cover throughout. When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding rider Kevin Forrester stated after breaking through the barriers his mount was agitated. Kevin Forrester added the gelding travelled beautifully throughout the event was beaten for speed in the early stages by Tried and Tired so he therefore elected to race wide and provide his mount with every opportunity. Kevin Forrester explained the connections removed the visor for the first time today as the gelding over raced last start in the All Aged Stakes at Randwick on April 15 th. Holly McKechnie had her licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight May 3 rd and to expire at midnight May 14 th, a total of thirteen race meetings (three metropolitan, ten provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account the carelessness was in the mid-range.
