Upcoming Competitions: Saturday, April 1, 2017 Saturday, October 7 th Lexington, 11:45 am Maysville, 8:30 pm Saturday, October 21 st Newark (early afternoon) Saturday, October 28 th OMEA State Finals at Hilliard Darby

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF BANDS Most returning band parents are probably already wellversed in band competition rules and terminology. For those new to band contests, you may be interested in a brief overview of how things work. Each competition will have bands in a variety of classifications (C, B, A and AA), based on school enrollment. Lancaster falls into the largest classification, Class AA. Each band has a 15 minute block of time to set up, warm up, perform their show (actual show lengths must be between 7 and 11 minutes), and exit the field. Evaluating the band performances are 2 Music judges, 2 Visual judges (1 Visual Effect and 1 Visual Performance), 2 General Effect judges, 1 judge, and 2 Auxiliary judges. The ratings of the two Music judges, two Visual judges, and the two General Effect judges evaluation are used to determine the final rating of the band. In addition, the percussion judge and both music judges rate the percussion section and combine their scores. These seven ratings are then converted to a final rating. Bands who earn the top rating of Superior are eligible to participate in State Finals in late October or early November. Each adjudicator (the official name for judge) also gives the band a numerical score. These scores combine to provide an overall score out of 300. Rankings in each class (1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place) are given at most contests based on this overall numerical score. The Band of Gold has had a great start to the season. At the Licking Heights Pageant of Bands, we received 1st Place in Class AA and Best. The following week, at our home contest, the band received a "Superior" rating, qualifying us for participation at OMEA State Finals. This will be the 37th consecutive appearance by the Band of Gold. We are very proud of all of our band members! While healthy competition is a great motivator for making improvements, the main reason we compete is to be evaluated by experts in our field. This feedback, given in written form and on a recording, helps the band to make continuous improvement in many areas. As the season progresses, please continue to utilize the many means of communication in order to stay informed regarding upcoming events. On behalf of the entire band staff, I want to thank you for your continued support of the Lancaster Band program. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming performances! Ben Factor FROM THE BAND BOOSTER PRESIDENT Congratulations to the Band of Gold and the directors on their Superior rating at our Invitational on Saturday, September 16th and for qualifying for OMEA State Competition. Everyone has worked so hard and they proved it on Saturday. I cannot wait for the next competition day. I want to thank everyone who volunteered for our 37th Annual Band of Gold Invitational. It was great to see so many students, alumni students, parents, alumni parents, and friends involved. It takes a lot of volunteers to make this a successful event. I want to say a huge thank you to Lori Peters for being our Invitational Chairperson and heading up this great event. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered at the concession booth this season. We have had volunteers for three home games and the Invitational. We still have two more home football games and the Ewing/Sherman game this fall. We will need plenty of volunteers for the concession booth. Please contact Tera Valentine (t_valentine@lancaster.k12.oh.us) to volunteer or look at her signup genius to volunteer also. Senior Night will be October 20th. Please consider helping out in the concession booth if you do not have a Senior student so Senior parents do not have to volunteer that evening. October brings the Fairfield County Fair. We will need volunteers for the fair booth and lots of yummy desserts donated. Please contact Dean and Debbie Cook (cookdd@hotmail.com) with any questions or to volunteer at the fair booth. Please come and support the Band of Gold at their performance on Thursday during the band show at the fair. Good luck to the Band of Gold at the rest of their competitions this season. We are all so proud of you! Beth Wing Band Booster President

BAND BOOSTER MEETING The next band booster meeting is Monday, October 2, 2017 at 7:30pm in the band room at. FUNDRAISING The candy bars are being ordered! Please watch social media for announcements on distribution dates. As in years past, you need to pay for the candy bars at the time of pickup. Students will earn $0.50 for each candy bar they sell for their personal accounts. Please note this will be the only fundraiser this year for their personal accounts. The money earned by students can be used to offset their costs for uniform maintenance, pay-to-participate fee, and band camp. Please remember to use the Amazon Smile program. Follow the link below and the band will earn a small reward with each purchase. This works seamlessly with your existing Amazon account if you already have one. http://smile.amazon.com/ch/31-6077693 Mark Molnar Dana Travis Fundraising Co-Chairs BAND OF GOLD INVITATIONAL I want to send a special Thank You to all the people that volunteered their time in some capacity to make the Band of Gold Invitational a success! No job is too small, and all hands were greatly appreciated!!! I hope to see you and more next year for more music and fun! Lori Peters Invitational Chair FAIRFIELD COUNTY FAIR October 8-14, 2017 Fall is in the air and it is time again for the Fairfield County fair. That means we are in desperate need of volunteers to work the booth and donate bake goods. There are some changes this year that have been brought to our attention by the county health department. All baked goods must have a list of ingredients and your name attached. We can only accept cream and pumpkin pies that are store bought. All other pies and baked goods can be made at home. The pie cart will be available to drop off your baked goods at the middle entrance on Fair Avenue. It will be there every day from early in the morning. The ticket takers can assist you. Our biggest day for baked goods is Wednesday due to our senior citizens lunch special. We are also in great need of volunteers to work the booth. We have several open slots on every day still to fill. It takes a lot of volunteers to man the booth and it is one of our biggest fund raisers for the year. We appreciate any time that you can give us and will be happy to work around your schedules. We can be reached by phone at 740-653- 2749 or 740-785-8313. You can also email us at cookdd@hotmail.com. Thanks, Dean and Debbie Cook Fair Booth Chairs
