Sunday Night Dance Class by Dance Class Chair Chuck DiSessa The class members of the San Diego Smooth Dancers started another year of classes in grand fashion. Several familiar and some new faces graced the floor of the Champion Ballroom Academy as Carrie Kloss began instruction on January 8th in the American Tango at 5:00 pm followed by the Cha-Cha at 6:00 pm. Teaching from the new Silver Syllabus for American Ballroom dancing, Carrie led the class with a rich blend of both challenging and slightly familiar choreography. The pace was brisk, and the moves were delightful. Carrie wasted little time introducing the new moves and reviewing the technique to allow better execution by the class members. Time went by quickly, and everyone seemed to be earnestly applying themselves to do the moves well. At 6:00 pm, Carrie presented another challenge for the class. The new Cha-Cha moves included many syncopations that few had ever seen. Additional choreography had men doing back-spot turns with two variations to come out of them into an open or cross-over break. The creative material that Carrie introduced had a positive effect on the class, evidenced by the gushing enthusiasm of class members when discussing the choreography during the break. We are fortunate to have such top flight instructors, giving us their very best to satisfy our interest, as well as aid our growth and progress, in ballroom dancing. It s part of our purpose of existence as a dance organization. So please, do yourselves a favor by clearing out your Sunday night schedule in order to attend our dance classes. The club needs your support to remain viable, and, in return, you ll get a lot more out of it than you expected. Starting next month, Phillip Gott returns to lead our classes with instruction in the Bolero at 5:00 pm and the Samba at 6:00 pm. The Bolero is often well attended and Phillip s choreography is nothing short of brilliant. Many of us expressed how much we enjoyed his classes last year, and are excited to work with him again this year. In the second class, Phillip will be teaching a social Samba (as he refers to it), and encourages everyone to attend. His technique often reflects his deep experience for many years as a professional Latin competitor. These techniques make it easier for class members to do the choreography, and also enable them to look better as they dance it. Come on down beginning March 4th, the day after our March coronation, and experience how delightful his classes can be. On another note, Cathy O Harra is the newest member of the dance class committee, and will be highly visible before classes at the registration desk. Be sure to welcome her if you have not already done so. In addition, Russell Jenkins has volunteered to help out with technical details whenever he is needed. [Russell, by the way, is the DJ every Wednesday evening for Mary Manzella s social dance held at the Dance For 2 studio.] Thank you Russell and Cathy for your willing hearts and giving spirit. You are role models who work in the best interests of the San Diego Smooth Dancers, Inc. It s attitudes like this that will keep our club active and viable for the near future. In closing, once again, many thanks to all of you who faithfully support our classes. You give your best, we give our best, and together we continue to grow as a dance family. Stay healthy, and keep on dancin!! p a g e 3 of 6 pages
