Morrisey & J. Morrisey for the late declaration of riders as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Race 1: Dillon Legal QTIS 2YO Maiden SW Plate - 900m 1st - High Degree 2nd - Just Lucky 3rd - Turbo Jet 4th - Costly Saga Correct weight was delayed to enable App R. Jamieson the rider of 3rd placegetter TURBO JET to view the patrol footage to ascertain whether she had grounds to lodge a protest against the winner HIGH DEGREE (App B. Appo). After viewing the film both App Jamieson and trainer L. Morton did not wish to proceed with the protest. TURBO JET shifted out at the start inconveniencing BALENDI (C. Small). LOVE WINNING (J. Morris) began awkwardly and shortly thereafter had to be steadied when tightened for room between HIGH DEGREE and JUST LUCKY (Matthew Palmer), both of which shifted ground. Approaching the 200m TURBO JET attempted to improve to the outside of HIGH DEGREE and in doing so bumped JUST LUCKY on a number of occasions. Shortly thereafter TURBO JET was disappointed for that run when HIGH DEGREE shifted out marginally resulting in TURBO JET having to be steadied and shift back to the inside of HIGH DEGREE to secure clear running over the concluding stages. JUST LUCKY raced wide throughout the event. J. Morris the rider of LOVE WINNING reported that the filly felt as if it was shin sore. The stable representative for trainer T. Bailey was advised that a veterinary clearance for LOVE WINNING would be required should the filly race again within a 6 week period. Race 2: Dillon Legal Maiden H'Cap - 1100m 1st - Like Brand New 2nd - Famous Grouse 3rd - Earhart 4th - Mockba HARK ANGEL (Matthew Palmer) began awkwardly and shifted in bumping EARHART (K. Yoshida). FRISCO JOE (App R. Jamieson) was crowded for room on jumping away between FAMOUS GROUSE
(App N. Masuda), which shifted out and BERNARSINI (J. Morris), which shifted in after beginning awkwardly. MOCKBA (L. Rolls) was slow to begin. Leaving the 1000m HARK ANGEL had to be steadied to avoid the heels of LIKE BRAND NEW, which shifted in when insufficiently clear. App McKenzie the rider of LIKE BRAND NEW was reprimanded for this incident. App M. McKenzie the rider of LIKE BRAND NEW pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in near the 900m when insufficiently clear of LA DINGALING (A. Merritt), which was taken in onto BERNARSINI, which had to be checked and lost ground when tightened for room between FRISCO JOE and LA DINGALING. App McKenzie's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of eight (8) meetings to commence midnight 27 January 2014 and to expire midnight 8 February 2014. J. Morris reported that after suffering interference near the 900m the saddle on BERNARSINI shifted backwards placing him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event. As a result BERNARSINI took no further competitive part in the race. A post race veterinary examination of BERNARSINI failed to reveal any abnormalities. Race 3: Assured Management Benchmark 75 H'Cap - 1200m 1st - Richmond Grove 2nd - One To Go 3rd - Nakanai 4th - Gundy Gal TEA TATTLE (App C. Schmidt) began awkwardly. RICHMOND GROVE (App M. McKenzie) began awkwardly and bumped ONE TO GO (App N. Masuda). Approaching and rounding the home turn TEA TATTLE was held up on the heels of GIFT OF THE DAY (App R. Jamieson). RICHMOND GROVE shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages. When questioned as to the tactics adopted on TEA TATTLE App C Schmidt stated that she had been instructed to position the gelding at the rear of the field as it had previously performed best when racing in this position. App Schmidt added that she had anticipated TEA TATTLE to improve into the race much better than it had today and as a result was disappointed in its overall performance. A post race veterinary examination of NAKANAI (L. Rolls) revealed the gelding had sustained a laceration to its near hind leg and had cast a near fore plate in running. Race 4: PKF Gold Coast Maiden SW Plate - 1400m 1st - Harbor Springs 2nd - Miss Fifi 3rd - Gods N' Warriors 4th - Schuster HENASAR (C. Small) shifted in at the start and made heavy contact with HOLIDAY (App R. Jamieson). At the same point HARBOR SPRINGS (App S. Fawke) began awkwardly, shifted out and made heavy contact with HOLIDAY. As a consequence both HARBOR SPRINGS and HOLIDAY lost ground at the start. GODS N' WARRIORS (L. Rolls) was slow to begin. Shortly after the start SCHUSTER (M. Hellyer) shifted out and inconvenienced LIMONCELLO (App C. Schmidt). Leaving the 300m HARBOR SPRINGS shifted in abruptly and when being corrected became unbalanced for a short distance. LIMONCELLO raced wide throughout the event. Upon return to scale L. Rolls reported that it had been his intention to ride GODS N' WARRIORS closer to the speed today however, after being slow to begin the gelding failed to muster the necessary speed in the early stages and as a consequence settled at the rear of the field. Race 5: Robina Town Centre Class 2 H'Cap - 1100m
1st - Nicky Nocky 2nd - Rile 3rd - Extra 4th - Threescoreandten Connections advised that from the wide barrier BLAKEY BOY, which usually leads, would be ridden in a midfield position if circumstances permit. As a consequence BLAKEY BOY raced 3 wide throughout the event. NICKY NOCKY (M. Hellyer) shifted in at the start and bumped LUCK FROM ABOVE (P. Timbery). THREESCOREANDTEN (App B. Richardson) was slow to begin. Passing the 100m RILE (P. Holmes) shifted out under pressure inconveniencing THREESCOREANDTEN. THREESCOREANDTEN raced wide throughout the event. P. Holmes reported that RILE did not feel comfortable racing on today's track conditions. Race 6: 1800 Onhold Class 3 H'Cap - 1800m 1st - Tenderloin 2nd - Melatte 3rd - Westbrook 4th - Zips A Daisy TENDERLOIN (J. Morris) and POPSTAR PETE (P. Holmes) were both slow to begin. STROMBO (App S. Fawke) and IN TAIPEI (App B. Richardson) both raced wide in the early stages of the event. PAPA'S GOTHIC (M. Hellyer) overraced in the early and middle stages and passing the 900m shifted wider and raced wide from that point onwards. ZIPS A DAISY (L. Rolls) was held up approaching the home turn on the heels of the weakening IN TAIPEI. DANEARES (C. Whiteley) shifted out near the 200m inconveniencing PAPA'S GOTHIC. Leaving the 200m ZIPS A DAISY was obliged to alter course to the inside of NEURUM ROAD (App C. Schmidt) to secure clear running. CALCULATION (App M. McKenzie) raced wide for the majority of the event. When questioned as to the disappointing performance of CALCULATION App M. McKenzie noted that the gelding had raced wide throughout however, was still disappointed with its failure to finish the race off. App McKenzie added that CALCULATION was under pressure leaving the 600m and he was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the disappointing performance. A post race veterinary examination of CALCULATION failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith was also at a loss to explain the disappointing performance and undertook to advise stewards should anything come to light in the days subsequent that may explain the gelding's performance. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on ZIPS A DAISY jockey L. Rolls stated that he had intended taking up a forward position as per the mare's last start. Jockey Rolls added that after beginning only fairly ZIPS A DAISY failed to muster the necessary speed to take up a forward position and subsequently raced further back in the field than anticipated. His explanation was accepted. Race 7: Baslyn Beel Fillies & Mares Class 1 WR 1kg H'Cap - 1400m 1st - Northern Zoom 2nd - Wasabi Punch 3rd - Tulla Express 4th - Grawlix LOVES RETURN (App M. McKenzie), which was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly and lost considerable ground. NORTHERN ZOOM (J. Morris) overraced in the early stages of the event. Leaving the 500m NORTHERN ZOOM shifted out to improve and bumped FIRE WHEN READY (L. Rolls). Upon straightening HOT CHILLI MILLY (K. Wharton) had to be eased when placed in restricted room between BEST OF MY LOVE (L. Cheshire) and FIRE WHEN READY. GREEN CASHMERE (App B. Appo) and WASABI PUNCH (App B. Richardson) both raced wide throughout the event.
A post race veterinary examination of HOT CHILLI MILLY, which proved disappointing, failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer R. McCall undertook to have an endoscopic examination performed on HOT CHILLI MILLY the results of which he would provide to stewards. Race 8: Outback Jacks Top Cut Australia Day Cup C, G & E Class 1 H'Cap - 1400m 1st - Evocative 2nd - Breeze On By 3rd - Caznot 4th - Jundah Jack The start was delayed when COWORTH PARK (J. Morris) proved difficult to load. EVOCATIVE (App M. McKenzie) became fractious in the barriers as the start was effected and subsequently began awkwardly losing considerable ground. JUNDAH JACK (L. Rolls) began awkwardly. CAZNOT (Bradley Appo) overraced in the early stages and for a considerable distance passing the 1000m had to be steadied from the heels of I DO CARE (App B. Appo). Leaving the 1000m BREEZE ON BY (App S. Fawke) had to be steadied from the heels of LITTLE NATHAN (F. Jervis) and shifted out forcing DINA'S DRAGON (P. Holmes) wider on the track. DINA'S DRAGON and BREEZE ON BY were then obliged to race wide for the remainder of the race. Approaching the 800m BEEZIP (M. Hellyer) improved onto the heels of LITTLE NATHAN and had to be steadied. JUNDAH JACK which was following had to be steadied as a consequence. Leaving the 600m BEEZIP again had to be steadied from the heels of LITTLE NATHAN. Approaching the 200m Bradley Appo the rider of CAZNOT momentarily lost the use of his whip when it was knocked from his grasp by App S. Fawke (BREEZE ON BY) and as a consequence jockey Appo was only able to use the whip sparingly thereby placing him at a disadvantage over the concluding stages. Bradley Appo was fined the sum of $200.00 for failing to ride CAZNOT right out to the end of the race under the provisions of AR137(b). In assessing penalty stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that jockey Appo's failure to ride CAZNOT out to the end of the race affected its finishing position. Matthew Palmer reported that it was his intention to settle closer to the speed however, BLACK NINJA was unable to muster the necessary speed in the early stages and as a result raced further back in the field than anticipated.
