SE MN H.O.G. CLUB #2443 ROCHESTER HARLEY DAVIDSON 7180 Highway 14 East Rochester, MN 55904 507-288-9050 Greetings, Southeastern Minnesota Harley Owners Group #2443 February 2013 Newsletter Directors Notes Since this is my first message ( I haven't figured out what to name it), I thought I would tell you a little about myself and my family. I'll keep it short! We moved to Rochester 20 years ago from St Louis Park for my wife's job. Sue is a State Farm agent and the club secretary. Her office is on North Broadway. We have 2 children (adults), Matt and Erin, 23 years old. They are twins (that's why they are the same age!). They graduated from Century in 2008. Erin earned a nursing degree and now lives and works in Austin, Texas. Matt is graduating from UMD with a finance degree. Both were athletes, playing traveling sports as youth and continuing thru high school. So although I have had motorcycles since I was 15, I didn't really start to ride seriously until they were out of high school. It is amazing how much spare time you find after they get out of the house! My last bike was a '96 Royal Star Tour Classic. I put 10,000 miles on it in 10 years. I have 37,000 on my '08 Ultra and Judy says its time for a new one! I have had careers in the restaurant, mortgage, retail and real estate title businesses. I am currently an independent health coach with Take Shape For Life and just completed my insurance licensing tests so I can help out at Sues office. We are both looking forward to being more involved in the club and we hope to see you at the meetings and events. Mike February 2013 For more info & links : www.semnhog.com Page 1

Dale Nelson Webmaster Around the Bend With the weather that is approaching this weekend, don t think TOO many will be out riding! Have seen a few in the last few days though, and can only hope they are watching for all the typical hazards on the road at this time of year-black ice, sand/salt on the roads, PLOWS, critters etc, etc, etc. I would like to talk a little about everyone s favorite topic----insurance! State law says we gotta have it. Opponents of motorcycles/riders say we cost the state too much because we don t have or don t have enough insurance. I ll leave it up to you to decide what you do. MOST standard policies cover the basics, which are liability and property damage. In other words, they cover what you hit and who you hit-not YOU! Unless you get or have a bike insurance policy that covers you-bodily injury-and your bike-collision/comprehensive, you will need to make sure any health insurance policy you have, thru work or some other source will cover an injury to you February 2013 For more info & links : www.semnhog.com Page 3

while riding your bike. We will talk Collision and comprehensive later. A special note here is that ALL mc policies in MN. DO cover the passenger for injuries etc. There is a loophole for employer sponsored health insurance benefits. This loophole is called The Source Of Injury Exclusion Clause. In a nutshell, this gives the employer the RIGHT to deny coverage for an injury that happens while engaged in or doing something they consider risky recreational behavior. This could be racing, skydiving, skiing, motorcycling take your pick. This is part of a bill called HIPPA that came about in 1966. Long story short, check with your insurance co BEFORE you actually need to use it. I did! How about collision and comp. It s a good idea to make a list of and take pictures of all the extras and accessories you have on your bike. After an incident, some of the extras may be gone, destroyed-whatever. Better to have a record of what was there than to be guessing and trying to remember. Also, check to see if your bike-or car for that matter-is covered for a stated value or the blue book or whatever guide they use. I don t know anything about trailers, so it would be a good idea to check on those too. I have a friend who had a car accident that was not their fault last fall. The insurance company only covered the book value even tho there was still money owed on the car. It can happen. Last topic ok, quit yer clapping-goin any where this winter? Daytona s coming, Texas will be warming up, Phoenix is getting nicer and California is----california!! Before you go, take a look inside your HOG atlas and see if there are any special laws or equipment needed. Legal in MN. may not be legal in??? If you are renting a bike, you can either take the insurance the rental outfit offers or check with your insurance co. to see if your bike insurance will carry over to a rental much like car insurance will. And remember: LET S BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!! PS: Hope the guy in the picture listed HIS accessories!! February 2013 For more info & links : www.semnhog.com Page 4
