NEWSLETTER April 2010 It's easy to have faith in yourself and have discipline when you're a winner, when you're number one. What you got to have is faith and discipline when you're not a winner Vince Lombardi From the Headmaster s Desk Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy The month of April seems to have skipped by, which possibly attributes to the fact that the first years were on leave. My wife and I were also away over the Easter weekend and for a few days during the middle of April, to attend my daughter s graduation in Pretoria. During the first break we wonder if our first year apprentices will come back after experiencing the comforts of home. While we try our very best to make the Academy a home from home, we have to be realistic and understand, that this is in fact a school and a place of training and work. A presentation of Academic awards took place at the first assembly of the 2 nd term. I would like to congratulate all those apprentices who received awards and encourage the other students to achieve as well. The 2 nd term is going to be extremely busy; as you no doubt are aware it is the Racing Season in KwaZulu-Natal. Our apprentices feel pressurised because it is more difficult to secure rides and in addition to this, they have their midyear school exams. The matrics in particular need to work very hard, as they are writing an important exam which will contribute to their finals. The pressure is now on both the apprentices and the teachers to cover the syllabus and to ensure that we maintain our 100% pass rate. We congratulate all of the apprentices that have ridden winners this past month, in particular Justine King who rode her first winner on Oceans Away at Fairview in Port Elizabeth on the 26 th April. We thank trainer Mr. A.C. Greef for the opportunity. We also congratulate Jassurick Jordaan who rode his first treble at Greyville on the 30 th of April. His first win came when he picked up a chance ride from trainer Muis Roberts onboard Arctic Bear. He then rode Vin D Honneur for trainer Paul Lafferty and rounded off the evening winning on Mike s Choice for the Muis Roberts Stable. We notice with pride our first year apprentices progress in their riding skills. On this note we congratulate Donavan Dillon, Bryan Claassen and Gerrit Olwagen, who all started work riding at track.

In closing I would like to remind the apprentices of the relevance of the words of champion jockey, Douglas White. In his address to apprentices at the Academy on the 14 th July 1997, he mentioned ten very important points. One of the points was Motivation and Goals. He asked the apprentices, What do you want to be when you finish your apprenticeship? Do you want to be a battling jockey or a top jockey? You must decide now and work at it now. He used Muis Roberts in his example, Muis Roberts is a man of great character, who decided that he wanted to be at the top and then to stay there. Best wishes Graham Bailey Some important dates to remember DATE ACTIVITY Wednesday 11 June 2 nd term ends Monday 5 July 3 rd term starts Thursday 23 September 3 rd term ends Monday 4 October 4 th term starts Friday 3 December 4 th term ends 26 29 October Apprentice interviews for 2011 intake (throughout SA) Wednesday 15 December break up day Forthcoming Events DATE Saturday 15 May Sunday 23 May Saturday 5 June Friday 27 August Saturday 18 September Friday 9 October Tuesday 7 December EVENT SAJA Charity Race Day at Kenilworth, Cape Town First years are going to the races at Clairwood Academy Thoroughbred and harness racing demo at Royal Show SAJA Charity Race Day at Arlington, Port Elizabeth SAJA Charity Race Day at Turffontein, Johannesburg SAJA Charity Race Day at Greyville, Durban Annual Speech Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony Apprentices visit ushaka Marine World Our apprentices and staff paid a visit to Sea World at ushaka Marine World on Wednesday 21 April. Lesley Labuchagne, a volunteer at Sea World, met us on arrival and immediately escorted us to watch the dolphin show. As usual the show was fantastic. Niven Marday was selected by one of the dolphin trainers to participate in the show. We all cheered him on. 2

Lesley explaining to the apprentices on the pump system in the aquarium After the backstage experience, Lesley took us to her pride and joy, the Dangerous Creatures Exhibition, where we got the opportunity touch and feel various reptiles such as giant lizards, pythons and various other creepy crawlies. We all thoroughly enjoyed this experience and we had a good laugh at one another. Kelvin Khoo and Hennie Greyling holding a python Andile Mgcobo looks like he s just been bitten by a snake 3

After visiting Dangerous Creatures we visited the underground aquarium. This aquarium is the largest aquarium in the southern hemisphere and has a shipwreck theme. The dolphin trainers invited us to observe how they weigh, draw blood, urine and stool samples as well as how they administer medicine to dolphins. We ended of our visit to Sea World on a high note with the hilarious seal show. Hayley Tennant, one of the seal trainers provided us with an interesting talk on seal training and care. The seal show Hayley Tennant chatting to the apprentices about training and care of seals The Academy s visit to ushaka Marine World has become a highlight on our annual calendar.
