NEWSLETTER June 2009 Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul, the blueprints of your ultimate accomplishments. Napoleon Hill From the Headmaster s Desk Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy It is difficult to believe how quickly the time has gone by. With the end of June out of the way, we are now into the last half of the year. Ones attitude will determine how we deal with the time available. It s like the half glass of water and how one sees it as either being half full or half empty. For us here at the Academy we see the last six months as an opportunity to achieve more and to do greater and exciting things. We have a number of congratulations to extend; firstly we congratulate Karis Teetan who rode his 100 th winner on the 31 st May 2009 when he rode Captain s Gal for trainer Sean Tarry at the Turffontein track. Following hard on his heels is Derreck David who rode his 100th winner at Flamingo Park. He won on Mint Green for trainer David Niewenhuizen. We had no sooner had a braai to celebrate the first winning ride of Athandiwe Mgudlwa, when Ryan Curling rode his first winner when riding in the apprentices race that was run at Turffontein. Athandiwe Mgudlwa winning at Scottsviille 03/6/09 Ryan Curling winning at Turffontein 20/06/09 At the end of term Assembly we handed out a number of certificates for the achievements of apprentices during the second term. We congratulate those that were recipients of those certificates and we encourage them to continue to set their goals high. Those that were not

so successful need to accept the challenge to raise their standards and to challenge those that have set the bench mark. Sadly at the end of term assembly we said goodbye to Ms. Michelle Van Vuuren who left use to take up a new position. We really wish her every success and hope that she will be happy in her new endeavours. As we say goodbye we also welcome to the staff, Ms. Noma Myeza, to the front office. We also wished Ms. Halgreen a wonderful trip to Canada, and look forward to the photographs and stories on her return. Staff and Apprentices wishing Miss Michelle van Vuuren a fond farewell During the academic break the apprentices will be doing a number of exciting activities which we will share at the end of next month. The Gold Cap award has been awarded to Gareth Wright for the month of June. We congratulate him for this achievement and encourage the other apprentices to strive to achieve this award. Best wishes Graham Bailey Some important dates to remember DATE ACTIVITY Monday 20 July 3 rd Term starts Wednesday 23 September 3 rd Term ends Monday 5 October 4 th Term starts Friday 11 December 4 th Term ends Forthcoming Events DATE EVENT Friday 17 July SA Jockey Academy Race Meeting at Fairview in Port Elizabeth 2 7 August Racing South Africa Careers Expo 2009 at the Academy Saturday 22 August SA Jockey Academy Race Meeting at Turffontein in Gauteng riday 9 August SA Jockey Academy Night Race Meeting at Greyville in Durban 2

SAJA Race Meeting at Kenilworth We hosted our first race meeting at Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town on Saturday 20 th June. The event was a great success with 140 people attending a special function in the Peninsula Room. The weather was perfect, the racing was awesome and the atmosphere was electric. We have received many compliments from people who attended. Also a big thank you to the following: Gold Circle for all their assistance in making this event a success and for taking a hospitality table Basil Marcus Racing Stables, Mike Bass Racing, Sorrento Stud, Klawervlei Stud, Courier Transport and Tableview Coachworks for taking hospitality tables. Zita a jeweler situated in the Paddocks Shopping Centre in Milnerton for sponsoring a gents Lanco wristwatch for our lucky draw. Guilma Stander for selling the lucky draw tickets Liesl King for educating some of our guests on horseracing and taking them down to the Parade Ring. This was a first time experience for most of these guests. Charles Grey our Marketing Manager and Vincent and Lorna Curtis for organizing the event. Our next race meeting takes place at Fairview in Port Elizabeth on Friday the 17 th of July. Apprentice visit Chelsea Preparatory July Horseracing Day On the 23 June, 1 st Year Apprentices, Stallone Lee Naidoo, Jayson Dladla, Keagon de Melo, Julius Mariba and Tanya Gee attended a special July Horseracing Day at Chelsea Preparatory in Durban North. To compliment the horseracing theme our Apprentices dressed up in colourful jockey silks, breeches, racing boots, safety vests and riding crops. We arrived at the school at 7:45am and were welcomed by a very nice teacher who took us to the hall and we were seated on the stage like VIP guests. The learners (Grade 4 s) arrived dressed up in elegant clothing and hats as if they were attending the real Vodacom Durban July the smartest Grade 4 s I ve ever seen. They were very excited to see us as we were like their role models. Mr. Grey presented the Academy to the learners and asked Tanya to talk about the day in the life of an apprentice jockey she did a great job! Mr. Grey called up one of the boys from the audience who was only nine years old and asked him to stand next to Jayson who is 19 years old. The nine year old boy was taller that Jayson and this 4

shocked and delighted the audience. The grade 4 s also asked us a whole lot of interesting questions which made us feel very important. Afterward we were invited to pose for pictures in the school garden with some of the learners. Mr. Grey then took us to the beach where he took some more pictures of us in our colourful riding gear. Tanya Gee, Julius Mariba, Jayson Dladla, Keagon de Melo & Stallone Lee Naidoo That was our amazing morning. Hope we can do it again sometime. To Chelsea - thank you for inviting us. We had a great time! Stallone Lee Naidoo 1 st Year Apprentice A Visit to ushaka Marine World Mr. Grey arranged a special visit to Sea World at ushaka Marine World for all the apprentice jockeys. We were all very excited about this experience. Some of our apprentices had never been to an aquarium and dolphin show before. When we arrived at Sea World we were escorted by one of the dolphin trainers to the backstage area of the dolphin stadium where they introduced us to some of the dolphins namely Gambit and Frodo and their new beautiful new baby Khetiwe. We really felt special as this behind the scenes tour is not open to the public. We then went on to watch the dolphin show which was spectacular. The presenter selected Jonathan Soll to go on stage and hug and kiss Gambit. Eddie Leeuw was also called up to participate in the show. They put Eddie in a boat and the dolphin swam by and splashed him. We all laughed. 5

Eddy Leeuw having fun with a dolphin Jonathan Soll giving Gambit a big kiss After the show we were taken to the largest underground aquarium in the southern hemisphere where a guide gave us an informative tour. All the apprentices had an amazing time and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at Sea World, ushaka Marine World for providing us with this informative and fantastic time. Dolphins are truly beautiful and amazing creatures! Stallone Lee Naidoo 1 st Year Apprentice Apprentices recognized and rewarded for their riding skills At our final assembly held in the second term, our headmaster, Mr. Graham Bailey presented various riding awards to our apprentices. 7 Apprentice birthdays celebrated during June Jayson Dladla Karis Teetan Niven Marday Donovan Howell Jonathan Soll Here s wishing you guys a very happy birthday and trust that you all had an awesome day!!! Phumelela Gold Apprentice Challenge (August 2008 July 2009) As we are drawing to an end of an exciting challenge for season 2008/2009, Karis Teetan leads by 6 points over Derreck David. This means only these two apprentices can win this years challenge. We had two Durban apprentices win the challenge races in Gauteng, the first was won by Juan Paul van der Merwe on Bernabeu for trainer M Houdalakis and the second challenge was won by Ryan Curling on Great News for trainer B Botes. This gave Ryan Curling his first winner since the academy granted him his apprentice license. There is one more challenge which will be held at Clairwood Racecourse on 27 th June 2009 this will be a very exciting race as the two apprentices fight it out for the winning trophy. The points are as follows: Pos PHASE ONE Points 1 Karis Teetan 63 2 Derreck David 57 3 Andile Mlaba 49 4 Donavan Mansour 43 5 Victor Morake 28 6 Jonathan Soll 22 7 Brandon Lerena (Qualified) 20 7 Melishini Pillay 20 8 Timothy Pretorius (Qualified) 19 9 Gavin Coetzee Juan Paul van der Merwe 16 By Robert Moore 7

Ending off with a smile A KwaZulu Natal horse breeder had a filly that won every race in which she was entered. But as she got older she became very temperamental. He soon found that when he raced her at Greyville in the evening, she would win handily, but when he raced her at Clairwood or Scottsville during the day she would come in dead last. He consulted the top veterinarians and horse psychologists to no avail. He finally had to give up because she had become... a real night mare. HA HA HA HA HEE HEE HEE HEE HAW HAW HAW HAW HE!!!
