Promoting SOUTH AFRICAN BLOODSTOCK to the world With export restrictions still in place, the majority of South Africa s top performers remained on home soil during the 2015/16 season and treated South African horseracing fans to some high class racing action. The performance of the Ideal World filly, Smart Call, in the 2016 J&B Met arguably ranked amongst the best ever recorded in Cape Town s premier racing event, not least the manner in which she beat Horse Of The Year, Legal Eagle (Grey s Inn). Her subsequent six month long journey to reach the Breeders Cup was always going to be fraught with difficulty and so it proved when she suffered a minor setback in training in the UK and plans to travel to the USA were shelved. European racegoers will hopefully have the pleasure of seeing her in action in Perhaps Forries Waltz (Grey s Inn), who races in the yellow and blue colours of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum, was the most impressive of the South African exports when landing the Gr.2 Al Rashidiya in Dubai. In doing so, he took his record to five wins from six starts in the 1800m event and showed a fine return on investment from his original Sales price of R at Bloodstock South Africa s National Two Year Old Sale in Horse Of Fortune (Stronghold), continues to improve for South African ex-pat trainer, Tony Millard, recording his career best effort when winning the local Gr.3 Ladies Purse and taking his career earnings to over HK$7 million, some 90 times his original Sales price of R paid at the Cape Premier Yearling Sales conducted by Cape Thoroughbred Sales in From a very small sample of SAF bred horses in HK, Millard s Secret Command and Mint Master also earned consistently well for their owners during the year under review. Across the South China Sea in Singapore, another ex-pat trainer, Patrick Shaw, got the best out Singapore Turf Club of two SAF bred geldings, Time Odyssey (Jet Master) and Mighty Emperor (Kahal), the last named a half brother to Horse Of Fortune. But, it was the runner-up effort of Time Odyssey in the Gr.1 Singapore Gold Cup that took his earnings to a very healthy S$ Time Odyssey is the younger half brother of Tellina, another export that enjoyed prominence in Germany this year when second in the Gr.3 German St Leger. From a Sales perspective, South Africa continues Flax - Purchased: US$ Earnings: US$ to be a great value destination for international investors producing tough, hard-knocking thoroughbreds and importantly the opportunity to buy the best bloodstock available. Bloodstock South Africa and Cape Thoroughbred Sales hold auctions throughout the year and cater for all pockets (see major sales dates on page 4). A foreign buyers incentive scheme is also offered at all major sales. Q: Where should I race my horses? The major provinces cater for horseracing from nine racecourses across the country. Due to the geographic and climatic diversity within South Africa, there are four distinct racing seasons: Cape Town from November to February, Johannesburg from September to December and February to April and Durban from May to August for the racing season s finale. Many trainers move their strings between the various centres to take advantage of the higher quality racing and better prize money offered during these seasons. Q: What are the Tax implications of being a foreign based owner? 1. VAT In order to qualify for a VAT refund, the following applies: Horse must not be raced (unused) Exported within 90 days of purchase Importer is then given another 90 days to lodge a claim 2. Income Tax For the serious investor, the registration of a Company is the best method of managing tax issues. Q: How do I apply for colours? The National Horseracing Authority will consider your application to be an owner, whether as an individual colour holder, in a partnership or syndicate, or under your Company name. South African stakes relative to costs are comparable to many of the major racing jurisdictions internationally.
