1 NEWSLETTER June 2012 "Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy." From the Headmaster s desk Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy Dale Carnegie Most of the month was spent on the apprentices writing their mid-year exams and their respective reports will be sent out during July. The 2 nd term ended on Friday 22 June and school starts again on Monday 16 July. We trust that they all enjoy their well deserved break and come back ready to prepare for their trials. We are delighted to announce that some of our apprentices have secured race rides at the Vodacom Durban July this year. These include Donovan Dillon, Keagan de Melo and Nooresh Juglall who each picked up four rides we wish them all the best! The Academy thanks trainers Des Edges, James Goodman, Yogas Govender, Kumaran Naidoo, Dennis Drier, Doug Campbell and Duncan Howell for providing our top apprentices with this fantastic opportunity. Gold Circle has once again invited our 1 st year apprentices to assist before and after the main race at the Vodacom Durban July. This is a great opportunity for them and will also provide the Academy with fantastic exposure. Liesl King photographed Donovan Dillon work riding July runner, English Garden at Clairwood. I would like to congratulate the following apprentices on their riding achievements: Keagan de Melo for riding his 50 th win Bryan Claassen and Julius Mariba for riding their 10 th win Chantelle Olwage, Tristan Godden, Mathew Thackeray, Sutvhire Toolooa, Serino Carlisle, Brandon May, Callan Murray, Jhondray Doncaster, Ntokozo Gumede, Mervin Teetan, Shadlee Fortune and Diego de Gouveia for advancing to riding track work for trainers at the training centres in KwaZulu Natal All the apprentices that secured wins during June see results later on in this Newsletter

At 43kg and knee-high to a grass hopper, Ntokozo Gumede is built to be a jockey and with the help of the KZN Bookmakers Society and the South African Jockey Academy, this youngster from Umlazi Township, outside Durban, will be afforded every opportunity to make race-riding his career. The KZN Bookmakers Society was quick to embrace the opportunity to sponsor Ntokozo s first year of education and training at the Academy after being approached by the Academy s Marketing Manager, Charles Grey. Society CEO, Sean Coleman put the request to his Executive and they agreed to Ntokozo s sponsorship. Sean Coleman (KZNBS) presents Ntokozo with a cheque for R Ntokozo is joined by his grandfather Stanley Zungu and his sister, Mbali Mtshali With no previous background in racing, Ntokozo was a pupil at Ogweni Technical High School, when a friend suggested that, because of his size, he should apply to the SA Jockey Academy. Ntokozo was assisted in completing the application forms and was duly admitted to the Academy after meeting all the requirements. An orphan, Ntokozo lives with his grandfather, Stanley Zungu, during the holidays. 3
4 The KZN Bookmakers Society and its members have been avid supporters of horse welfare, with the Coastal Horsecare Unit as its main beneficiary, who this year celebrates its 10 th year of support. However, Coleman said the Society had co-incidentally been looking at other avenues for their CSI programme and when approached by Grey it was a no brainer, according to Coleman. We hope to set Ntokozo on a career path of sustainable empowerment. As an industry we want to create and develop a culture of We Care. 0,1% of our gross profit is set aside for sustainable corporate social investment and we have invited our members who are licensed bookmakers, to consider contributions in their own right at 0,1 % of gross gaming revenue. Our initial sponsorhip of Notkozo will be for an initial period of one year. We will monitor his development with great interest and wish him every success. We will be open to continue the sponsorship. Ntokozo, whose middle name is Toogood, says that he has been enjoying his time at the academy and hoped to follow in the footsteps of his hero Muzi Yeni. By Andrew Harrison East Coast Radio Jock Swop The Academy received an from East Coast Radio asking us if we would be interested in taking part in their Jock Swop initiative for their popular morning show called the Breakfast Stack. Our response was an immediate an absolute yes! The reason for the Jock Swop was that the Breakfast Stack presenter, Darren Maule was astounded to discover that Wez Cruikshanks, technical producer of the show, was frightened of horses and believed that jockeys were unnecessary for racing. Darren Challenged, Wez to do a jock swop. Wez was sent to the Academy to learn how to groom a horse, clean a stable and to ride a horse. 4 th year apprentice, Keagan de Melo was selected to join Darren at the East Coast Radio studio s to do Wez s job. Both Wez and Keagan thoroughly enjoyed their swopped responsibilities. Keagan had the opportunity to chat live on air to Darren and cross over to the Academy and provide Wez with some horse handling tips. Our head riding master, Mr Rhys van Wyk assisted by our 1 st year apprentices, provided Wez with riding instruction. By the end of the campaign, Wez was trotting around the indoor arena. After Wez s riding lesson, he agreed that a jockey was extremely necessary when racing a horse. The campaign was a great success providing the Academy with fantastic exposure to millions of listeners. 4

Justine wore two dresses designed by top Durban designer, Karen Monk-Klijnstra. Gill Simpkins did her make-up and local photographer, Adrian Shields took the pictures. 5
6 Justine has already appeared in various newspapers and will also grace the front page of M Magazine, the Musgrave Centre s official magazine. She has also appeared in the Gallops advertising campaign on Tellytrack for the Vodacom Durban July. This was a wonderful opportunity for Justine to realize her potential as a woman in racing. During the photo shoot she said I do can do this kind of thing every week. Justine the jockey Justine the cover girl The next apprentice selected to model for a media photo shoot was 1 st year apprentice Callan Murray. The Sunday Times published a feature on Gill Simpkins. The picture (below) including Callan was unfortunately not used but the experience was great! Some of them even tried out our race horse simulator this really amused the rest of their group. 7

Jeremy Downing Sports Conditioning Trainer Surge Accelerated Sports Performance surgeasp@vodamail.co.za Ending off with a smile A punter was at the horse races playing the ponies and all but losing his shirt. He noticed a Priest step out onto the track and blessed the forehead of one of the horses lining up for the 4th race. Lo and behold, that horse - a very long shot - won the race. Next race, as the horses lined up, the Priest stepped onto the track. Sure enough, he blessed one of the horses. The punter made a beeline for a betting window and placed a small bet on the horse. Again, even though it was another long shot, the horse won the race. 13
14 He collected his winnings, and anxiously waited to see which horse the Priest would bless next. He bet big on it, and it won. As the races continued the Priest kept blessing long shots, and each one ended up winning. The punter was elated. He made a quick dash to the ATM, withdrew all his savings, and waited for the Priest's blessing that would tell him which horse to bet on. True to his pattern, the Priest stepped onto the track for the last race and blessed the forehead of an old nag that was the longest shot of the day. This time the priest blessed the eyes, ears, and hooves of the old nag. The punter knew he had a winner and bet every cent he owned on the old nag. He watched dumbfounded as the old nag came in last. In a state of shock, he went to the track area where the Priest was. Confronting Him, he demanded, 'Father! What happened? All day long you blessed horses and they all won. Then in the last race, the horse you blessed lost by a mile. Now, thanks to you I've lost every cent of my savings! The Priest nodded wisely and with sympathy. 'Son,' he said, 'that's the problem with you Protestants; you can't tell the difference between a simple blessing and last rites.'
