December Newsletter McKinley Monarchs Superb Teachers, Empowering Students to Live a Rewarding Life 16949 S. Cottage Grove South Holland, Il 60473 W: www.sd150.org T: 708-339-8500 Principal s Page Dear McKinley Families: We are in the middle of our Holiday Season. Many festive activities are occurring inside our school and throughout the community. On December 2nd, Mr. Chiong, our Art Teacher, and I took some students with us to decorate a tree at Veterans Memorial Park for South Holland s Annual Winter Wonderland. Our tree decorating dates are December 2 and December 9. On December 8 at 7:00pm our extraordinary choir and fabulous band will entertain us with some great singing and music. We encourage all to come and enjoy this wonderful program. Our beginning band performed at Barnes and Noble Book Store last month. The concert band and choir will also perform at Greenwood Elementary on December 16. As we end our last fall holiday, we begin to celebrate another winter holiday season. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or any other winter holiday, I wish you a merry time with friends and family. Honor Roll Last month 302 students received their honor roll certificate, for maintaining a 3.0 GPA or above the first quarter. Many parents and relatives of the students came out to support them and congratulate them. PARCC Assessment Our school district tied for second with the number of students who met and exceeded on the PARCC test, in comparison with thirty-three other schools with the same number of students. McKinley teachers and staff have continuously been preparing for the PARCC Assessment Test during institute days, and before and after school. Over one-hundred students are benefiting from our extended day program. Mrs. Cook, Ms. Staley, Mr. Hannagan, Mrs. Sockwell, Mrs. Orr, Mrs. Hotchkin, Mrs. Carter-West, Mrs. Gonnella, and Mr. Krugman are the teachers for the program.

Assistant Principal Greetings McKinley Family! Funny how time flies when you re having fun! It seems hard to believe, but we are actually almost half-way through the school year! In fact, Quarter 2 ends on January 11, 2016, the week we return from Winter Break! We are not just working diligently to prepare our children to be successful in all areas, but we are having a blast doing it! Please ask your child about the fun, exciting, and educational things going on in their classrooms. Our halls are filled with impressive projects on habitats, politics, and science fair ideas! Although we believe our children have earned a much needed winter break, we want their minds to stay active and attentive as we are only half-way through the school year. In other words, It s not over! During this break, please make sure that your child finds time to read a book; AR points are still a significant component of their reading grade. They can also log into Zearn.com or Khan Academy just to keep those skills sharp! If they travel, find a teachable moment, as experiences are the greatest teachers! Thank you for sharing your best with us! Happy Holidays McKinley Family! In the Community participated in South Holland Community s 2nd Annual Winter Wonderfest event. A few of McKinley s students and staff along with Principal Jerome Ferrell attended the tree decorating activity on Thursday, December 2, 2016. The students used ornaments designed in art class to decorate the tree. ~Ms. Perkins Assistant Principal
