INTAKE AND EXHAUST A Publication of Candlewood Valley Corvettes. Inc. August, 2011 Mid Life Crisis Race Team at the 24 Hours of LeMons, Stafford Springs; the Team and 2 Cars! Best quote of the event heard from one of MLC s tough-as-nails driver after completing an extended session in 100 degree heat Quick, take my helmet off! I m gonna barf Monthly meeting at 7:30, Aug 18 st, Thursday, at Bennett Automotive Service, 295 Danbury Road. Our Website; http://www.cvalleycorvettes.com/ 1

The President: A lot of people have been working hard behind the scenes to enable the CVCC# 30 Anniversary Show and Shine to be successful. It is important for all to continue to be diligent and to continue to promote the show within the car club and enthusiast communities. Promote the Ad book, sell some vendor space, distribute the show fliers etc Thanks to all for their work, especially to Mike Kindel. Please come to the August meeting on the 18th. Some of our regular members will not be able to be at the show so please do not hesitate to raise your hand to help in this event. Continue to save car magazines for the youngsters. Let s pay particular attention to the kids and possibly inspire them to become a Car Guy in the future. New club family member Bryan Getler has volunteered to fill in for Gary in the Secretary roll. There will be a vote on his nomination at this meeting. We welcome him and his wife Gayle to the club. For the first time we will be filming the Show with Charter Communications (local community TV station). If anyone has some particular point that they would like to emphasize at the event, please let me know. There will be interviews, coverage of the judging, the model car competition and coverage of the Corvette Art challenge by the youngsters as well as the presentation of the trophies. We can use this film during the year when the snow flies to review our efforts for the next show. The AAA article has been written so please keep your eyes peeled for its arrival at the end of this month in your mailbox. The Ad in the cruise news looks great! More to come at the meeting Bob Burkardt, President The Vice President: We recently enjoyed a great cruise to the American Pie restaurant located in Sherman, CT. The food and service were excellent. It is too bad that the picnic had to be dropped due to a low response rate from club members. I imagine this was due to summer travel and vacations by members. The Corvette Show and Shine will be here soon, so please attend the meeting on August 18, 2011, since it will be the last meeting before the Show. We need all members to help, in order for the Show to be a success. John Olivia 2

Stafford Springs, CT July 23-24, 2011 MLC (Mid-life Crisis) racing team just completed their weekend of racing. Not only did they do well as a whole, both cars completed the fifteen hour race without any major problems. Sure, there were minor problems like a broken tie-rod and a few scratches added to the cars but they performed admirably! Andy broke the record for changing a tie-rod end and doing an alignment! The teams comprised of Crew Chief Andy S, Chief welder/fixer/parts man/driver Renzo S, Refueling Chief Carl S. Drivers were (listed in no particular order other than ladies first, Debbie, Phil, Bob, Gary, Tony, Chuck, Mike, Renzo, and Harry. Naturally, Head Conductor Neil was the one who orchestrated everything, collected the fees, did the paperwork, bought supplies, etc, etc, etc. Immediately following the race, Neil presented awards to all who participated. Most appropriately, Tony stepped forward and presented a trophy to Neil, who initiated the whole idea for a Lemons Mid-Life Crisis Racing Team! They started the race on one of the hottest days of the years at noon. Temps were well into the high 90s, possibly over 100. Andy made sure everyone was aware of the dangers of dehydration. There were constant reminders to drink, drink, drink. (So I did, as required.) Any drivers that felt at all strange were told to come in and another driver would take his/her place so they could cool down. Drivers naturally were wearing a full fireproof suit. If you felt warm over the weekend, imagine what they felt like! Everyone was glad to see the sun go down and it was better, a little! Racing for the day was over at 10 PM. everyone was glad to call it a day! 10 hours of racing on a very hot, humid day was enough! Day 2 started at noon with off and on rain. Naturally all the drivers were nervous about skidding on wet asphalt! The pace was considerably slower. By around 2PM, the rain had stopped, the track was drying and we still had cloud cover, thankfully. By 3PM the sun was out and it was hot again but not as bad as Saturday. At 5 the race ended with a hapless car losing a front wheel completely off the car as it rolled by the checkered flag. The wheel rolled aimlessly into the infield, a perfect ending to an imperfect day but a great race! One of the most interesting aspects of the race is the complete variety of vehicles, Nissan, Saab, Honda, Camaro, Lancia, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Peugeot, Fiat, Volkswagen, BMW, Ford, Fiero, PT Cruiser, you name it, it was there! Beauties all! Awards were given. No, MLC didn t get any but they went home satisfied that they performed well, finishing 13 th and 14 th overall and 3 rd in their class! The overall winner won $1500.in nickels! Boxes and boxes of nickels! MLC Racing Team dedicated the race to one of the team s enthusiastic supporters, Bob Ross! He would have enjoyed it! He was missed! Roger Long 3
