Savanna's River City Reader Page 5 ~Julia Atherton~ D113 Julia or better known to the Big Meadows family as Judy was born and raised in Lanark, IL. Her birthday is April 25, 1930. Judy attended Lanark schools. She later studied a year at Shimer College in Mt. Carroll and then she and her husband went to Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She taught for awhile in Paw Paw, IL. Her husband was James Atherton and they raised two children; Kurt and Kathy. When their son was 2 yrs old, they uprooted and moved to California, where she was a homemaker and served in various organizations as a room mother for her children s school activities for many years, was a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader and served as president of her Methodist women s group. Approximately 22 years ago, she and her husband returned to the Midwest, along with her children to live. Judy has four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, all whom live in this area. Some interests of Judy s have been her love of cooking and collecting cook books to find new recipes. She especially liked making Italian, Mexican and Chinese cuisine, which are some of her favorites. Another love of hers was playing the piano and she was quite a good seamstress; having sewn most of her clothing and her children s clothes and even made her daughter and granddaughter s wedding dresses. She also liked crocheting. Her favorite color was orange and she had a lot of orange hues in her home. Roses are one of her favorite flowers. Thank-you to Judy s daughter, Kathy, for her input into Judy s life. What Kathy has to say about Big Meadows is: It is a fantastic place to be and I m so glad my mother is there.
