Seniors What do I do Next? One s senior year of high school is a busy time during which a student finishes one chapter of his/her life and makes preparation to begin a new chapter. We often hear If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. There are steps every senior should follow in order to be ready for that next chapter. The list below may seem long and complicated, but it really isn t. And remember, the school counselor is there to help you along the way as a resource. We can t make decisions for you, but we can help you find the answers that will open the door to your future. Here are a few suggestions: Join us on Saturday night for an evening of fun as you help support seniors to further their education, Mrs. Green, fourth grade teacher and a member of the Sulphur Bluff Scholarship Board, announced. The eleventh annual scholarship dinner and auction will be held Saturday, September 25, 2010, at 6:00 p.m. in the Sulphur Bluff School new gymnasium. Tickets may be purchased at the door or from a member of the scholarship board. The scholarship banquet helps raise money to award deserving seniors scholarships to attend college. I am happy to know that I am on a committee that can help students further their education by attending a college, says Mrs. Green. Also the Sulphur Bluff Scholarship Foundation awards eighth graders with a motivational scholarship that is presented to deserving eighth grade students to motivate them to go to college when completing high school. This year s auction items include two sets of Dallas Cowboy Tickets, Texas Ranger Tickets plus parking, a thirty-gallon deer feeder, a Blue Ray DVD player, JB Weld assortment, two quilts, and an assortment of cakes, pies, and coffee creamers, as well as many other fabulous items. Games will also be played to win a fortytwo inch LCD Flat Screen and a fifteen inch HD Flat Screen. If you aren t already a Talent Search Participant, see the counselor for an application and more information on how to take advantage of these opportunities. 2. Decide on a career choice or narrow my choices to three career possibilities. (If you don t know how to choose, go by the counselor s office for help.) 3. Use the Career Cruising website to explore which college, university or tech school will best prepare you for your career choice. (Get username & password for career cruising from the counselor.) 4. Go to the college/university/school website to find a list of admission requirements. (What is the minimum ACT/SAT score required and which test do they prefer?) Check out the cost of attendance and if there is an admission deadline. Can I afford to live on campus or will I commute? 5. Now that you know which test you should take and what the minimum score requirement is for that school, go on-line to register for the ACT or SAT. You will find a list of test dates and registration deadlines on the websites: ( http:// sat.collegeboard.com/register and http://www.actstudent.org/regist/ dates.html) and in the counselor s office and posted in the High School. The cost of the ACT is $48 and the SAT is $47. (unless you have a fee waiver) You may use the computers in the Counselor s office to register. 6. Use the practice materials available for preparing for the tests. There are practice tests on each of the test websites, and there are practice CDs available for the Talent Search participants. Find out all you can about the tests ahead of time. 7. Apply for scholarships. You will get lists of available scholarships from the counselor by e-mail. There are others that will be announced during morning announcements. Get applications from the counselor. (or on-line) If you need help completing the applications, ask the counselor for help. Most of the area scholarships are offered in the spring. It is the student s responsibility to meet deadlines, and to return the completed application. If you have questions about how or where to return the application, see your counselor. FYI: The seniors will attend one or more college fairs during the school year. Sulphur Bluff ISD sponsors a local career fair each year at our school. There will be a financial aid workshop offered in the spring. Every senior has the opportunity for individual counseling sessions.

FCCLA Members Ignite the Flame FCCLA members flames are ignited! They have practiced and developed leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills that they will need in the future to acquire jobs and pursue their careers. Last Friday members participated at an FCCLA leadership training at Paris Junior College, led by three of the regional and state officers. They joined other area schools FCCLA chapters. The team took Leadership Enhancement Opportunity Tests to help them evaluate their knowledge of the organization s creed, mission and purposes, parliamentary procedure, job interviewing, consumer math, consumerism, and etiquette. Those earning bronze medals were Bruce Marrero, Amanda Fowler, Desi Greer and Stephanie Hogue in parliamentary procedure; Dustin Lawson in consumer math; Ester Marquez in job interview; Kaci Powers in creed, mission, purposes. Halie Waid earned a silver medal for creed, mission, purposes. They also participated in breakout sessions where they learned how to help with chapter projects and activities. Workshops included Teens in the Drivers Seat, Tech Prep, and Training for Success to gain valuable information. Mrs. Sharon Pierce, state FCCLA advisor from Austin, attended the meeting and also presented a workshop. FFA Fun Day-There was a big turnout for FFA s Fun Day this week. Students from 3rd grade on up joined in the fun and had time for a little work as they helped to clean up the FFA s adopted stretch of highway on highway 69 and took time out to learn about tractor safety, as well. FFA Fun Day Page 6
Lady Bears Take the Tigers to Five Last Friday night, Sulphur Bluff volleyball faced the Clarksville Tigers in their 2nd district match up play. In the first game, the Bears took the lead and never looked back with Virginia Rodriguez, Jamie Goldsmith and Stephanie Hogue scoring most of the points. The final in game one was 25 to 22. In game two, the Bears found themselves in a seesaw battle that they fell short of 23 to 25. Goldsmith was the leading scorer in that game. In game three, Rodriguez took control of the game scoring seven points to lead the Bears to a 25 to 23 victory and a 2 to 1 lead in the match; however, it was not enough for the Bears. In game four and five, the Tigers were too much for the Bears, winning game four 14 to 25 and game five 1 to 15. I was a little disappointed we fell short in the end, but I am very proud of the girls for battling all game long., Coach Toon said. Next week, the Bears will face Avery and Cumby on the road. The B Team did really well. too They all served very consistently. We had some great attacks by Greer and Calhoun. We had strong defense by all the players. The A Team Battled hard in game 3 just could not get the win the tonight. Good serving all around the team tonight. We had great defense from Hurley, Brown and Alvarez. They played their positions well tonight. We had attacks from Calhoun, Hurley and Evans. These girls played the net well. Harred picked up some good passing later in the game. JH Baseball Team Remains Undefeated Sulphur Bluff-10, Avery-0 The Bears played really well at the plate and on the mound. The Bears ended up with 11 hits total and that s all Justin needed for the win. Justin struck out 14 of the 16 batters that he faced giving him a no hitter for the game. Leading the way at the plate was Dakota Emerson had 2 singles and Justin Goldsmith had 2 doubles and a single. Thomas Coberley, Hudson Northcutt, Cody Vance, Kaleb Brown, Jaden Goldsmith, and Hunter Powers each had a single. The Bears are 4-0 and travel to Roxton next Thursday, Game time 4:00.
