Taylor Stadium College Park, Md. March 7-9, 2008 Originally Released: March 6, 2008 Maryland plays host to the Panthers of Pittsburgh, who come in with a record of 9-7. The Terps are off to an 18-1 start, the best in school history. Maryland is currently on a 15 game-winning streak, the longest in program history. Over the weekend Maryland won the Maryland Invitational, its third of four tournaments this year. The Terps defeated Seton Hall, 3-2, on Saturday before beating Columbia and Fordham, 2-0 and 13-12, respectively. The Terps are ranked s ranked 23rd in both the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and the USA Today/NFCA Top 25. Maryland moved up two spots in the USA Today/NFCA poll. In their last outing, the Terps swept James Madison, 3-0 and 7-4, on Wednesday afternoon in College Park, Md. Junior Sarah Dooley pitched a one-hit shutout in the fi rst game, while a season high six-run fi rst inning powered the Terps to a win in the night-cap. Senior Sarde Stewart leads the ACC in batting with an average of.385. She also leads the ACC with 20 runs batted in and a slugging percentage of.673. The Terps pitching staff is second in the ACC with an earned runs average of 1.37. At the beginning of the week, Terp pitchers held the third and fi fth best ERAs in the league. Jenny Belak leads the team with nine stolen bases to bring her career total to 45. Her next steal will break the school record. With her seven wins this season, Meredith Nelles has moved into fi fth all-time in career wins with 35. Nelles and Dooley are tied for second in the ACC this season with seven wins apiece. Stewart Grabs ACC Co-Player of the Week Sarde Stewart was named ACC Co-Player of the Week along with Florida State s Brittany Osmon for the week ending March 9. It is the second consecutive week Maryland players have been selected with Meredith Nelles and Kerry Hickey taking home ACC Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively, for the week ending March 2. Stewart went 8-for-16 in five games last week, also recording at least one hit in every game, as Maryland improved its record to 18-1. A starter at first base, she recorded two hits and two RBIs against James Madison in her first game of the week, then registered one hit in successive games against JMU, Seton Hall, and Columbia, before exploding to lead the Terps to a 13-12 win over Fordham on Sunday to win the Maryland Invitational. In that game, the Fontana, Calif., senior went 3-for-4 at the plate, blasting two home runs, and hitting the game-winning walk-off single to give Maryland its 15th win in a row. In her five games during the week, Stewart recorded nine RBIs and scored five runs to lead a powerful Terps offense. Moving up the Ranks... With 3 stolen bases over the weekend, Jenny Belak needs just one more to break the school record for steals in a career. In addition, she is currently in the top 10 in four more categories.
