But we had a good field and I got to play with two new members and that's what it's all about. Great job by Social and winning a ham made it all the better. Hopefully the weather will start turning to Spring-like conditions, get some grass growing and dig out the shorts instead of the parkas as we get into the start of our tournaments, leading off with the Mother's Day event this month. Remember to sign up for Match Play 1, it's another great way to meet new members and catch up with players you haven't played with in a while. Also good early results from the 10 minute starting times as our walking foursome played in four hours teeing off at 8:40 last week. See you at the 19th hole... The Tallwood Tradition 2 April 2013 Tournament Schedule: Thanks to the marvelous early spring we ve had, seems like the season s first majors will be upon us before we ve even had a chance to hit a small bucket. But the 21 st of April is the Mother s Day, the first opportunity to earn Golfer-of-the-Year points in what will no doubt be a season long exercise in the futility of trying to wrest that trophy from Tom Brett s hands. Please remember that since Mother s Day prizes are in the form of restaurant gift cards, your tournament punch card cannot be used that day. May brings three more GOTY events. The Match Play Classic is the weekend of the 4 th and 5th the flyer is below. Remember, if you can t find a partner just contact the pro shop and they will find one for you. Don t miss out on what many members feel is the best event of the year. The following weekend of the 11 th and 12 th is Pro s Trophy qualifying you can opt to attempt to qualify either day (but not both!) The low 31 net scores from the weekend will join defending champion Rob Bartha in a season long head to head match play event played at full handicap. The winner and runner-up will be honored at the year-end celebration with trophies selected by our esteemed PGA professional, John Nowobilski. This event is essentially the TMC s match play club championship, so I urge y all to try to qualify. Please remember, though, that you are making a commitment to arrange and play as many as five matches over the course of the season. The third May major is the Memorial Tournament, a flighted low gross/low net event played in honor of all our deceased Tallwood brethren. As in all our trophy events, trophies will be earned by overall gross and net winners, but GOTY points will be awarded in each flight. Of Note: As of this writing, there are spots available for only five more teams in the Governor s Cup. The sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse, so hustle on up there before it s too late. Taking USGA recommendations into account and also consulting with the pro shop staff as to what would be a reasonably uncomplicated procedure, we ve decided on a method for matching cards to determine winners in GOTY and trophy events other than the club championship. That method will be as follows, and will be applied whenever matching of cards occurs, regardless of type of start (i.e. shotgun, first tee, first and tenth tees). For multiple day events the second days scores will be used; if an event should be reduced to nine holes, the procedure will commence with Step 2. Step 1: Lower back nine total score, using gross score for gross, gross score minus half handicap for net. For example, if a 10 handicapper and an 11 handicapper were matching cards for low net and each shot a gross score of 42 on the back nine, the 11 handicapper would win. (42-5=37 for the 10; 42-5.5=36.5 for the 11). Step 2: Sudden death, hole-by-hole starting at the first hole, using gross scores for gross and net scores for net, handicap strokes applied as they fall on the card. For example, if a 10 handicapper were matching vs. an 18 handicapper and they both made 6 on the first hole (the #5 handicap hole) and both made 4 on the second hole (the #17 handicap hole), the first hole would be tied with net 5 s and the 18 handicapper s net 3 vs. the 10 handicapper s net 4 on the second hole would make the 18 handicapper the winner.

The Tallwood Tradition 3 April 2013 Step 3: In the unlikely scenario that two players have exactly the same scores for all 18 holes and in the case of net also have identical handicaps, the winner will be decided by a coin toss. If we ever get to step 3, I will have won Powerball multiple times and it wasn t OJ s DNA!! Please remember that matching cards will only occur to determine trophy winners or, in the case of the Mother s and Father s Day tournaments, winners of larger-denomination gift cards. In other cases, if there is a tie for a position that would yield GOTY points, all players tied at that number will receive the points. Ken Comerford, Tournament Chairman Social The Spring Classic was held on Saturday, April 6 th. 100 golfers participated in our first Social tournament. It was a brisk spring day of golf. It was nice to see returning members as well as meet our new members. A special thanks to Captains Dave O Brien and Gary Greenwald for organizing the event and to Zac for helping raise $211 for Caddy s Day. The next Social Tournaments are Scotch Ball I on June 1 and our premier event, the Member-Guest on June 15. Please pencil in those dates in now. Greg Berger and Scott Marshall, Co-Social Chairmen Handicap The most important point to remember when determining an accurate and meaningful handicap is: Enter every score you shoot!! This means 18 hole scores, 9 hole scores and even partial 18 and 9 hole scores when a round is cut short. This year the Handicap Committee will be checking to make sure all scores are entered into the GHIN System. Although we cannot check all rounds played (please try to enter week day, league and other scores not Tallwood Men s Club related), we will be checking to ensure Men s Club weekend scores have been entered. The procedure we will follow for weekend tournament scores is: the first time a score is not entered we will enter it and notify you and/or your group that your score was not entered and we did so. The second occurrence will also result in the handicap committee also entering your score, but in this case, we will also include the addition of the lowest score you have in your recent scoring history. This example is identifying a low score omitted, but we can also do the reverse and add a higher score should the omitted score be higher than normal. The point to remember is: Enter all your scores!! In future editions of the News Letter we will be addressing Equitable Stroke Control, Nine Hole scoring input, partial round scoring input and unfinished hole scoring. If there are any other topics you would like addressed or answered, please let us know. Jim Bidwell Handicap Director

The Tallwood Tradition 4 April 2013 Spring Membership Meeting At the spring membership meeting, three proposed changes to the Tallwood Men s Club constitution were considered by the members present. The first change proposed was the removal of the communications director from the board of directors and the assignment of the communications duties to the secretary. The discussion included the past rationale for creating the communications position. The rationale for dropping the position includes the change in workload and the assumption that the secretary can handle the workload or get assistance. This was passed with a voice vote of members present. The next change proposed was the removal of the requirement for the communications committee to post tournament scores on the Tallwood Men s Club website. This proposal will clean up the constitution, as the pro-shop staff is posting these results. There was little discussion other than clarifications. This was passed with a voice vote of members present. The final change proposed to the membership was to allow 16 and 17 year old males to become regular members of the Tallwood Mens s Club. Further language in the proposal noted that members would be required to be 18 years old to serve on the board of directors of the club. There was a great deal of discussion and many points of view were presented. After the discussion was brought to a close, there was a motion to approve and it was seconded. This was passed with a vote of 19 aye, 13 nay. The board recognized many good points during the discussion and will continue to review options to promote junior golf with different membership options for younger players. David O Brien Secretary
