Also, thanks you to all who helped staff the Tallwood booth. If you missed the Blasts and many s -- The Spring Classic is being played on the Rain Date 4/21/2018. The Sign-ups are in the Pro-Shop. 2 Membership Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time in support of TWCC at the Golf Show, from the planning team to the Show volunteers. Those who attended and volunteered gave great feedback and several new members applied directly through the Show membership incentives. New members - Please welcome ten new/returning members Evan Chipkin, Bill Gerardi, Bob Jenkins, Mike Long, Kevin McCooe, Mike McMorrow, David Rinn, Bill Tomlinson, John Viklientz and Bob Wolf. Renewal for 2018 To date, 214 regular full-time members have renewed for 2018 which is essentially the same number for the same period, If you have not yet renewed, please do so as soon as possible. The member count has a bearing on the Social and Tournament Committees budgetary planning. The form for 2018 membership renewal is available on the web site or you can complete your renewal on line. We are accepting applications for Young Adult (Junior), as well as Regular members. Please select your membership category and forward your payment to the address on the application. Recruiting incentive For 2018, any returning member who recruits a new member will receive a 25% rebate on the current year s dues, up to 100% (maximum of four new members). So, for each new member, the returning member will receive a rebate of 25% of the dues paid for the year. If you are referring a new member, please ensure that the new member fills in the referred-by line on the application/renewal form so the returning member can receive the rebate! All comments and suggestions are welcome. TMC_membership@yahoo.com If there are any questions, please me at Bob Wahlberg Membership Director TMC_membership@yahoo.com Treasurer How Your Club Operates Treasurer s Role The TMC Treasurer is responsible for the budget, income, spending, and financial recordkeeping of your Tallwood Men s Club. Early each calendar year, projected budgets are created & revised, based upon various levels of expected club membership, (ie: income). The budget becomes final in April, once the annual membership count is firm. Each TMC Board of Director has his own sub-budget to 2

3 manage during the year. The Social budget and the Tournament budget are by far the largest two subbudgets for your club. The club has some fixed expenses; such as insurance, website, and printing. However, over 90% of your $ (early) or $ (regular) for annual dues goes directly back to the members in the form of social event and tournament subsidies, your GHIN handicap, and yearend awards/trophies. The Treasurer balances the bank statement every month, and presents it to the TMC Board of Directors. The Treasurer s books are formally audited every year, and the audit results are also presented to the Board of Directors. Checks and cash that you send to the pro shop for tournament & social entry fees are held by the pro shop until the event has concluded. After the event, the pro shop gives your checks & cash to the Treasurer for deposit into the TMC checking account. CHECKS ARE ALWAYS STRONGLY PREFERRED, but cash may also be accepted if necessary. During 2018, the TMC will occasionally be testing electronic payment alternatives. Each year, over $100,000 flows in and out of the TMC checking account. At year-end, your club plans on about a $2,500 operating balance to carry-over into the start of the next year. In addition, the TMC has already set aside $2,000 for the 50 th Tallwood & TMC Anniversary celebration in Kim Aderman Treasurer Social Sadly, the weather has not been very cooperative so far this spring. The Spring Classic, scheduled for April 7 th, had to be postponed until the rain date of April 21 st due to course conditions. Here s hoping the weather improves for us to complete this fun social event to start our season. If you have not signed up to play, please contact the Pro-Shop immediately. Looking down the road, our next events are Scotch Ball I and the Member Guest. Planning is underway for both of these events and details will be released as soon as they are available. The Social Committee is looking forward to a fun and exciting year of events for the Tallwood Men s Club. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact either Co-Social Director. Earl Brown and Gary Greenwald Cosial 3

She loves to golf in her free time and hopes to pursue a career in the golf industry one day. We are very excited to introduce Rachel to our staff here at Tallwood. Rachel will be working in our Pro Shop with our ROCK STAR from last year, Abby Potticary. Make sure you come in say hi and introduce yourself to both Abby and Rachel. Hot Golf Topics The weather has blessed us with a slow start to spring, so what! There are many exciting and amazing opportunities to look forward to in the coming weeks and months. Here are some of my hot topics. - Wow, what a Masters. Sunday gave us some amazing moments and story lines. Saturday evening and Sunday morning the hot talks Views from our new golf shop were with Rory & Reed. Everyone was hoping for a rematch of the 2016 Ryder Cup s at Hazeltine. We saw history with Jordan s amazing Sunday charge. Rickie, kept us interested with a nice run of his own, capped off with a birdie on 18 to claim solo second (why can t he do that with the lead cough 0-12). -Augusta made an announcement this year that shook the golfing community and sports world. In 2019, Augusta National announced the first annual Augusta National Women s Amateur. This is a poetic addition to the National Drive, Chip and Putt and The Masters tournament. The opening two rounds would be held at Champions Retreat in Augusta, with the final round and low 30 players moving to Augusta National on Saturday. What an opportunity for the growth of our sport and for women s golf. - Congratulations to the Tallwood winners in our 1 st Masters Pool. 1 st Place goes to Joe Krist and tied for 3 rd -5 th place, Clay Hence, Donna Charrette and Tony Judenis. If you re curious you can ask them what the prizes were. We will have pools for all other majors this year. - Please be patient with the pro shop credits and results being posted online while we finish up the transition to our EZ Links point of sale system and Golf Genius Tournament software. -We have already seen many of you make orders and receive those products in a very timely manner. Remember, if we don t have a product you need we WILL get it fast. 5

6 FITTING DAYS COMING SOON!!!! Book of the Month Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game By Doctor Gio Valiante Mike Stachura (Collaborator) Favorite Quote - In the context of golf, fear is a misplaced and wasted mind activity, but as worthless as it may be, left unchecked it will be crippling to your chances at success. Fear is a termite or a bark beetle or an ascaris worm. It lives inside the host, devouring it from the inside by living on what the host provides. Gruesome, insidious, perhaps, but it's a very effective means of shutting down a system and making it incapable of functioning. That's what happens to the golfer affected by fear. His whole process for shot-making can be turned on its head. Fitting times fill us very fast so make sure you call the shop today to sign up for your time to get fit like the pros, here at Tallwood. Other companies still to come. Taylormade - Weds May 2 nd from 2-6 PM 30 minute fitting times Titleist Friday May 4 th from 2-6PM 30 minute fitting times Srixon/Cleveland/XXIO Friday May 11 th 2-5PM 30 minute fitting times Callaway Thursday May 17 th 2-6PM 30 minute fitting times Ping- Friday May 18 th 2-5PM 30 minute fitting times 6 Our NEW Vokey SM7 Fit KIT The Golf Shop is very excited to introduce our new Wedge Fit Kit. We have every grind and loft to properly fit you into the right wedges and improve your short game and your scoring clubs. Do yourself a favor and stop in or call us today to schedule a wedge fitting. - Just a reminder Match Play 1 is coming up very fast. Please get the application and payment in for your Team ASAP! You will find the application below. - The historic state capital city of Hartford, Connecticut, will play host to the 104th PGA Annual Meeting at the Connecticut Convention Center, Oct , The 2020 PGA Annual Meeting will focus on the PGA Member and growing the game of golf. Delegates will gather at the Convention Center to plan the path for the Association's future and conduct a scheduled election for the offices of PGA President, Vice President, Secretary and Honorary President. Approximately, PGA of America officers, board members, delegates, staff and special guests are expected to attend. Current PGA Vice President and Connecticut PGA Section Member Suzy Whaley, of Cromwell, is in line to preside over the 2020 PGA Annual Meeting. She is the first woman and first Connecticut PGA Section Member to ever serve as an Officer of the PGA of America.

7 Last chance Titleist ProV1/X buy 3 get the 4 th Free w/ personalization ends is this week!!! - I got out to play my first 9 holes in CT this past Saturday in the 1 st group with Joe Dura, Brendan Lewis and Will Jones. We had an absolute blast. Well, as much fun as we could have in the speedy 1.5 hours we played the front in. Notes from the round Brendan Lewis (the man who is responsible for me joining Tallwood) had a stellar front side 38, after opening with a 7 on #1. Don t talk around the greens when Will Jones (aka Mr. I only wear orange) is in your group, he putts so fast I found myself talking while he was putting a couple times but apparently it doesn t bother him. Lastly, Joe during jumps out of the cart, blasts it down the middle and jumps back in the cart so fast that I may have only saw 2 swings of his all day. What a great time getting out there. I hope more of you get to play with these 3 gentleman and I really hope I get to play with more with you this year. Zac Stennett PGA Professional 7

8 April News from the Lesson Tee Instruction Let 2018 be the year to get out of your comfort zone! Sit quietly and reflect on your strengths and weaknesses from Too often we go to the driving range and hit shots we feel comfortable hitting, but this doesn t allow us to grow as players. Decide to stretch yourself this season. I don t mean reinvent your swing. Choose one area of your game to explore. Start small and build positive momentum. Learn something new For example, maybe you struggle with uneven lies. Consider two common lies you find during a round at Tallwood downhill and uphill lies. The key with both situations is to set your body up parallel with the slope be one with the terrain Jedi Golfers! Downhill Lies Your weight should be on your target side (left side for right-handed players) and your shoulders should be parallel to the slope. Position the ball more toward your high foot. The more severe the slope, the farther back you should play the ball. Take less club than normal because the slope effectively subtracts loft from your club. If you would normally use a 7 iron from this distance, choose an 8 or 9 iron. When your body is parallel to the slope, it is easier to hit a solid shot. When your body is not parallel to the slope, your swing will tend to follow the line of your shoulders you will swing up on the ball and hit it thin. 8

9 Uphill Lies Your weight should be on your rear foot and your shoulders should be parallel to the slope. Position the ball more toward your high foot. The more severe the slope, the more forward you should position the ball. Take more club than normal because the slope effectively adds loft to your club. For example, if you would normally use a 7 iron from this distance, choose a 6 or 5 iron. When your body is parallel to the slope, it is easier to hit a solid shot. When your body is not parallel to the slope, your swing will tend to follow the line of your shoulders you will swing into the slope producing a fat shot. If you are like me, you are probably thinking How am I supposed to remember all of this?! And no, I don t want you referring to your men s club newsletter during a round of golf you might get one of those slow play letters in the mail! Regardless of whether your lie is uphill or downhill, remember only two things: (1) your weight favors the lower foot and (2) ball position favors the higher foot. Ahhhh, that s easier!!!
