Tuscaloosa Ballroom Dance Club enewsletter December 2017 Sleigh Ride Dance Saturday, December 9, 2017 7:00-10:00 pm Taylorville United Methodist Church (640 Bear Creek Road; 35405) Music by The Chekmates ADMISSION: Standard Members: $8 per person Sustaining, Bronze, Silver, Gold, & Platinum Members: Prepaid! Students: $5 per person Guests: $12 per person Members and guests must be at least 18 years of age. ATTIRE: Holiday Casual

Sleigh Ride Dance: Saturday, December 9 Beginning with the Sleigh Ride Dance on December 9, TBDC s dances return to Saturday nights. The Chekmates will provide dance music, 7-10 pm at Taylorville United Methodist Church. Dress for the evening is holiday casual. Yes, ugly holiday sweaters are invited! (This will be our last dance at TUMC; TBDC moves to McAbee Center in January.) The Chekmates. With great pleasure, TBDC welcomes the return of The Chekmates to Tuscaloosa! Tony Marino formed The Chekmates in 1957, and the band became known as Birmingham s best variety band. The Chekmates played for a number of TBDC dances during our club s early years. Though the band members have changed over the decades, the core sound has remained the same. When Tony Marino retired in 2014, his son, Anthony, became the band s leader, and The Chekmates continues to play for ballroom dances, wedding receptions, and various corporate events. They offer a fine mix of dance music that includes standard ballroom favorites, oldies, jazz, and more recent tunes. Do you need a quick review of dances steps before the dance? TBDC extends a special invitation to our Holiday Dance to those who have been enrolled in our fall dance classes. If you would like to review any of the basic dance steps before the dance begins, please come to Taylorville United Methodist Church just past 6 pm on the 9 th. Go to the end of the gym where the white lattice barricades are located and look for Scott and Nita Hestevold. They will have music and will review, by request, any of the basic dance patterns. The Tuscaloosa Ballroom Holiday Hand Bell Choir. During first break, under the direction of Regina Noland, there will be a rare appearance by the Tuscaloosa Ballroom Holiday Hand Bell Choir, playing several of your favorite holiday tunes. This is a performance that you don t want to miss: someone you know will be performing in the choir! A Salute to Veterans Dance DJ Jimmy (Kunz) provided the music for TBDC s Salute to Veterans Dance on November 17. Unfortunately, only forty-four dancers (including two veterans) were present to enjoy the inspiring Presentation of the Colors by the Hillcrest High School AJROTC Color Guard. TBDC extends thanks to Hillcrest AJROTC Cadets Sarah Falls, Tara Franks, Caitlyn Lewis, and Jacquelyn Samuel. For coordinating the ceremony, a special word of thanks also goes to AJROTC director Colonel (Retired) James E. Lackey, assistant director 1 st Sergeant (Retired) Walter Davis, and TBDC board member Regina Noland. Following the Presentation of the Colors, TBDC recognized veterans Dave Lewis (Navy) and Ray Pollard (Army) along with parents and grandparents of those currently serving in the armed forces. Throughout the evening, dancers enjoyed photographs, memorabilia, and other veteran items on the Memory Table. The Christmas Parade, Monday, December 4: Dancers are needed! Weather permitting, TBDC will have an entry in Tuscaloosa s 42nd Annual West Alabama Christmas Parade on Monday evening, December 4. Our VP Ken Lee has mounted TBDC banners on his bright blue truck, which he will park on 13 th Street at 4 pm on the 4 th. If you would like to help decorate the truck, please join us at 4 pm. And, if you would like to waltz down University Boulevard (and enjoy a sprightly holiday swing during parade pauses), please send email to Tuscaloosa.Ballroom.Dance.Club@gmail.com for details. If weather forces cancellation of our participation, then on the afternoon of the 4th, TBDC will post a notice on its Facebook page.

TBDC Introductory Ballroom Dance Lessons: January 9 March 27 TBDC s twelve-week introductory ballroom dance course will begin at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, January 9 in the gym at Taylorville United Methodist Church. Dances to be taught: Waltz, Hustle, Rumba, Swing, Cha Cha, Foxtrot. Note: To reach one s desired level of comfort, it is not uncommon for a ballroom dancer to take the full introductory series more than once. For further information: contact Regina Noland (regina001@aol.com or 758-4567). About Victoria DaCosta. Victoria is a former ballroom-dance competitor, who won several state championships. She has been a professional dance instructor for the past twenty-two years, teaching for studios in Minnesota, North Carolina, and Alabama. She has taught at Let s Dance for more than thirteen years. TBDC Intermediate Couples Ballroom Dance Lessons: register now! Note: These classes will be taught at the intermediate level and are for those who have completed TBDC s introductory series (or the equivalent). Those who enroll for this class should be smooth and confident executing at least three basic patterns for each of these dances: waltz, foxtrot, rumba, cha cha and swing. Dances to be taught: Intermediate Waltz, Intermediate Foxtrot, Intermediate Rumba, Intermediate Cha Cha, Introductory Triple-Time Swing, plus a sixth dance (e.g. West Coast Swing? Mambo?
