OFFICE LOCATION: N/A PHONE: OFFICE HOURS: As needed FAX NUMBER: N/A PREREQUISITES: PHED 107 or permission of instructor COURSE DESCRIPTION/OVERVIEW: This course will provide an introduction to the tango and additional patterns from foxtrot, waltz, cha-cha, rumba, and Eastern swing. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate dance fundamentals applicable to music, rhythm, dance frame, dance positions, dance floor alignments, leading and following. 2. State the history of the Tango. 3. Identify the dance and/or dance patterns from music played and/or dance demonstrations. 4. Demonstrate individually and with a partner advanced patterns taught in Foxtrot, Waltz, Cha Cha, Rumba, Eastern Swing and beginning patterns in Tango. REQUIRED READINGS Come Dance With Us, Ballroom Dance Manual, Vol. I by Carol Baker and Celeste T.Richardson, Copyright Handout Supplements will be given to students by instructor. COURSE INFORMATION 1. Students with injuries or pre-existing conditions that may affect performance must inform the instructor. 2. All communication will be through GMU . (1)
2 EVALUATION Requirements 1.. Dance Summary ( 5 %)- Students will visit at least one ballroom dance site and create a one-page self-critique of the dances in which they participated using the foot/body positions, timing, and lead/follow aspects as the basis for the critique. Suggested dance sites that may be used are: - Dance Factory, 954 N.Monroe St., Arlington, VA 22201, Phone (703) Hollywood Ballroom, 2126 Industrial Parkway, Silver Spring, MD 20904, Phone (301) In Step School Of Dance, 9440 Mathy Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030, Phone (703) Dance Performance (60%) Students will be evaluated on the dance skill performance of the dances learned. Performance evaluations will be based on foot/body positions, timing, and lead/follow -Student will demonstrate individually his or her part in one pattern in all dances taught. -Students will be paired to demonstrate couples dancing in all patterns taught in two dances. -The pairing of partners and assignment of the two dances for partner dancing will be done by a draw. 3. Laboratory Exercises (10%) Students will be evaluated during each class in terms of participation, following directions, and demonstrations. 4. Final Exam (25%) written test on dance fundamentals, history and characteristics of dances. Grading: Requirements Summary: Points Grading Scale Final Exam - 25 A = Dance Performance - 60 B = Dance Summary - 5 C = Class Participation- 10 D = Total 100 F = 0-59 This course is designed to improve health, wellness and quality of life.
