Head Teacher s Message The end of a very busy first half term at Carnforth High School. I hope students use the half term break to rest and relax after all their hard work. Endeavour grade cards have been sent out with all students this week and you should receive an electronic version during the first week back of the new half term. It is important that students take time to reflect on the positives from their grade cards and identify areas to develop over the rest of the year. Important Dates 6th November: GCSE/A-Level Awards Evening 13th November: Year 8 Parents Evening 27th November: Year 8 Options Evening 27th November: Sixth Form Recruitment Evening 7th December: Year 8 Options Deadline School News Endeavour 1: The first Grade Cards of this academic year have been sent home. Following an assessment period, subject teachers have given pupils the following grades: * Current Grade = the GCSE grade that the pupil is currently at * Projected Grade = the GCSE grade that the pupil should achieve by the end of the Key Stage. (Key stage 3 ends in July of Year 8, Key Stage 4 ends when GCSE/ BTEC examinations are taken.) The Grade Card will also display your child s aspirational target grade for each subject, as well as an Effort grade. Please familiarise yourself with the effort grade descriptors below: E1 - Outstanding I have excellent concentration and I m rarely off task. I am resilient and I am keen to tackle new and challenging work. I regularly take opportunities to extend my knowledge and I take responsibility for my own learning. I am enthusiastic and readily and actively participate throughout the lesson. E2 Good I apply myself well in lessons and work at a good pace. I readily tackle challenging work and try new approaches. I am well motivated and seek to produce my best work. I am enthusiastic and regularly participate in the lesson. E3 Satisfactory I apply myself well in lessons and work at a satisfactory pace. I can tackle challenging work and try new approaches when I need to. I am motivated and seek to produce my best work. I participate in lessons, but sometimes I need prompting. E4 Inadequate I am easily distracted and off task too often in lessons. I give up too easily. I lack motivation and often do not produce my best work. I do not regularly engage in lessons. All year groups have been reminded during assembly this week that E1 and E2 grades will only be awarded to those pupils who regularly and consistently display high standards of concentration, motivation and engagement. They will produce detailed homework and show exemplary behaviour for learning during lessons.

Sixth Form Recruitment Evening: On Tuesday 27th of November, we will be holding a sixth form recruitment evening to all students in Year 11. This will be there opportunity to come and meet with staff to learn more about the different subjects on offer at Carnforth High School. There will also be information on the resources we have available to students as well as the enrichment activities we can offer. All Year 11 students who met our entrance criteria with their endeavour 1 grade card were given a letter at the end of last term informing them of this. We hope to see you on the evening to show you what we have on offer for the next step in your child s education. Year 8 Options Evening: On Tuesday 27th of November, we will also be holding our Year 8 options evening. This is a very important evening which we hope all students and parents will attend. There will be a presentation on how our options process works at Carnforth High School as well as support on how to help your child select their options. All heads of subjects will be available on the evening to either discuss what their subject looks like as an option or to discuss the move to GCSE in core subjects: English, Maths and Science. There will be more information about this evening sent out over the next few weeks. Writers Club: Write Here, Write Now will be starting after half term. Every Wednesday after school, in E2, students from Year 9 and above can come along and explore their creative writing side with poetry, prose or play-writing. There will also be special literary guests at some of the sessions so why not get involved. Knitting Club: This club runs every Thursday and is open to anyone who wants to learn to knit. Just come down to the intervention room over Thursday lunchtime to learn this craft and maybe knit something as a Christmas gift for your family. Hair Salon Volunteers: We are looking for models to help our Year 12 and 13 learners to complete their practical assessments for the VTCT course. All services are free to staff, parents and learners aged 16 and above, however if you would like a colour application, then a skin test is required 24 hours prior and a donation of at least 5 to cover the cost of the product. If you would like to volunteer then please contact Mrs Fletcher on efletcher@carnforthhigh.co.uk Bags 2 School Scheme: Thank you to all parents and students who helped by donating old clothes and fabric to our Bags 2 School program. The bags were collected this week and we have raised 251.20 which will be invested into the PE department. Keeleigh Kennedy from 9Ru won the raffle of the 20 VUE cinema voucher. Sporting Achievement: Abi Johnstone has been selected to attend open training sessions for the Under 14 football squad Westmorland County Football Association. This is a great achievement for Abi who plays in goal for Grange United.

PE Results: It has been an incredibly busy final week of the half term, with 13 extra curricular fixtures in total. There is one still occur this week as the Year 8's take on a Central Lancaster High and a Vale of Lune team in a "curtain raiser" held at the Vale of Lune rugby club this Saturday. The games kick off from 1pm and our school will provide a guard of honour for the Vale of Lune 1st team for their 3pm game - the boys would welcome your support! We begin our sports report with the Year 7 emerging schools rugby festival held at Blackburn RUFC on Friday 12th October. This was the year groups first taste of tournament rugby and the boys adapted well to playing schools from all over the county. They recorded 3 wins against Darwen Vale, Hyndburn and Bowland and were defeated by a narrow margin against Ormskirk and St Augustines. The player of the tournament was Tom Fox who scored a hat-trick of tries against Bowland. The week beginning the 15th of October began with two more rugby fixtures. On Monday, the Year 7 rugby team travelled to Lancaster Grammar and were defeated by a good margin. However, Mr Daglish was particularly pleased with the player's "never give up" attitude. The Year 8 rugby team welcomed QES on the same day, they were beaten 30-20 in a very competitive game. On Tuesday 16th, the Year 7 had their 2nd rugby game of the week against Central. The team impressed with a 15-0 victory. The game saw the emergence of Matty Knowles for his first ever rugby match. Matt never missed a tackle, as a result, he has been awarded the boys sporting geek of the week for W/B 30th October. Wednesday saw both the boys and girls in action with years 7, 8 and 9 rugby players travelling to Dallam and the Years 7-11 girl's netball teams playing against Lancaster Girls Grammar. The Year 7 and 9 rugby teams were held to two draws, with the Year 8 teams winning convincingly. The results for the netball games were: Year 7 Lost 5-8 (Player of Match- Lauren Bell) Year 8 Lost 0-27 (Player of Match - Freya Walker) Year 9 Lost 0-21 (Player of Match - Shabnam Mall) Year 10 Lost 3-25 (Player of Match - Rosie Metcalfe) Year 11 Won 15-13 (Player of Match - Layla Rogerson) The final rugby games of the week were played against QES at home on Thursday. The year 10/11 team defeated a resilient QES 35-25. The year 9 team felt the effects of 2 two high impact games in a row as they were defeated 25-10, despite leading two tries to one at half time. Well done to all those who took part in either fixtures or training this half term.
