1 The Sandon School Newsletter 16 November 2017 JACK PETCHEY SPEAK OUT! CHALLENGE On Wednesday, 18 October, a selected group of year 10 students completed the Jack Petchey 'Speak Out!' Challenge workshop in the English department. Across the day, students participated in a range of interactive activities, led by a professional public speaker and actor, who helped students nourish their public speaking and presentation skills. At the end of the day, the students presented a short speech they had prepared in front of their peers. Congratulations to Samuel Griffiths, who was chosen to represent The Sandon School in the regional finals this Spring, and Terry Thurnell, our runner-up. Well done! Miss Cunniffe JACK SHOREY During half term year 9 student Jack Shorey went on a special ACF camp in Salisbury for a week learning about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Jack s Commander said Jack s application to attend the course was exceptional and he was the only cadet from the whole of Essex to get a place. He didn t know any of the other 160 cadets there and had to travel home independently by train. In addition to this, Jack was chosen to be Chelmsford s ACF wreath layer at the Remembrance parade at the war memorial in Chelmsford last Sunday. The photo on the right shows Jack in a helicopter simulator and the photo far right was taken on Sunday.
2 ENTERPRISE EVENT Year 9 took part in an Enterprise Event on 7/8 November. Students demonstrated excellent team work, communication, leadership and problem solving skills, all very relevant for the world of work! 9B1CHO won the Tuesday heat, and 9B2SJO won the Wednesday heat amid stiff competition, but there could only be one winner and 9B2SJO received the Year 9 Enterprise trophy - congratulations! I would like to thank all year 9 students for engaging so well in the activities, the staff for their support in arranging and participating the events and the Business and Economics sixth form students that assisted and judged the events. Below is a report on the event written by two our the year 9 students. Mrs Brittain YEAR 9 ENTERPRISE DAY Last Tuesday half of year 9 took part in an Enterprise Day. We were split into groups of seven and were given three tasks to be completed during the morning. Our first task was to design a poncho to suit all weather conditions. In our groups we had half an hour to create our poncho and write an advertisement for our poncho. After the time was up we had to present our poncho to the rest of the form where they voted for whose they thought was best. After that our next task was to come up with a solution on how to reuse and recycle unwanted tents from festivals. In our groups of seven we had another half an hour to find a solution to the problem and prepare our ideas. Some groups printed pictures, some acted out scenes and others wrote their ideas down. The presentations were then made to the rest of the form and the winner from that task was voted by the form. Our last task was to create a saleable product out of materials that we were given by our teacher. The materials included plastic cups, toothbrushes, crisp pots and other items. Again we had half an hour to create a product and prepare a speech to present to the form. When the time ended we showed our finished product to the form and they chose the winner. The winners from the three tasks had to present their idea or product to the rest of the year that were doing the enterprise task and sixth formers judged all of the groups and decided which one they preferred. During the morning we had sixth formers come in to assist us with our projects as well as other teachers. Thank you to all teachers and sixth formers that helped us throughout the day. Holly Thompson and Caitlin Smith YEAR 12 OTHELLO TRIP On Wednesday, 1 November, the A Level English Literature students set off to London to watch the National Youth Theatre s production of Othello. The performance took place in the Ambassadors Theatre, near Cambridge Circus in the City of Westminster. The objective was to consolidate our knowledge even further by actually witnessing Othello, which we are studying meticulously as part of our course, in a live setting. We travelled by coach and arrived with a little bit of time to spare. By 2.30 pm though, we were sat in an intimate theatre, pens in hand, adding notes to their copy of the play. I won t divulge the plot to you, but the concept concocted by the producers was to modernize the play, without deviating from Shakespeare s original text, thus making his words clearer to understand to the viewer. After around two hours of watching treachery, jealousy and despair, the play finished and we headed back to the coach, discussing the merits of the performance in detail, concluding an educational and informative day. The English Literature students would like to thank Miss Reeves and Miss McKenna for their supervision and for taking us on such an interesting and rewarding experience. Sacha Robinson, Year 12
3 PARENTPAY - MULTIPLE ITEMS SHOWING ON CATERING ACCOUNTS It has come to our attention that multiple catering items are showing on some students ParentPay accounts. Finance Department SIXTH FORM TASTER DAY - TUESDAY 21 NOVEMBER 2017 Our Year 11 students will be attending Sixth Form and/or College Taster sessions in school next TUESDAY 21 NOVEMBER. Year 11 students have had the opportunity to opt for a series of either A Level taster sessions, or college sessions. This day is designed to help our Year 11 students make informed choices about their post-16 education and/or training choices. Year 11 students will receive their timetables for the day at the start of next week. They are NOT expected to wear school uniform on the day but will be expected to conform to the Sixth Form Dress Code, details of which will be provided to Year 11s with their timetables. To facilitate the Sixth Form taster sessions, Year 12 and 13 students are NOT expected in school but will be given guidance from their subject teachers about independent work to undertake at home. The first game was against St Martin s who are always well organised and technically sound. This was demonstrated straight away with some nice passing to the wing and an easy run in for a try. With total control of the first half St Martin s ran in two more tries with Sandon seeing little of the ball. The second half was a much more even contest with Sandon executing their game plan well and scoring first then defending well until late into the game when St Martin s ran in a late try to end the match as winners with a score of Sandon s next match against Baddow was a new fixture with Baddow being promoted from division 2 after the last tournament. It was soon obvious why they were promoted. Strong direct runners and ball retention meant Sandon had no ball to attack with and were constantly on the back foot. Inexperience started to show and the team, eager to fight back, rushed out of the line to tackle, leaving holes that the Baddow backs exploited with ease. The final score was The last game was a re-run of the first tournament and saw Sandon take on Moulsham. The previous game was an extremely even contest. However, with Sandon low in confidence and finding it hard to position themselves in attack and struggling in defence Moulsham were able to control the game from start to finish, winning Moving forwards, set-backs are part of sport and playing in top division is always a challenge. The team can and will bounce back stronger with greater resolve as long as the commitment remains. Only hard work stands between them and success. (continued overleaf)
5 YEAR 8 RUGBY TOURNAMENT BRENTWOOD RFC The year 8 team were in good shape despite missing three players from the previous tournament. An injury the day before to hooker and captain Max Goldsworthy also meant a new line-up in the front row. The first game was against Anglo European. Sandon lined up ready, or so I thought. Anglo passed the ball twice, got on the outside and ran in for a try. Now they had given Anglo 5 points, Sandon decided that was enough and blasted Anglo with excellent straight, hard running in the forwards disrupting the defensive lines and then passing wide allowing Finley Logan to score his first try. This was followed by a bruising dash in the forwards with great ball retention and recycling. Joe Sandle eventually going over the line to score Sandon s second try. A third scored by Joe Dawe soon followed with Sandon remaining in control until a late break and Anglo s second try. The final score to Sandon and a hard fought game deservedly won. The second game of the tournament was against St Martin s and quickly Sandon were in the lead. Joe Dawe continuing his excellent try tally this year scoring a hat trick, along with tries from Nathan Dunston on the wing and Max Brown and Kade Silverman in the forwards. It was in the second half of the match Kade injured his shoulder and could no longer play. This was a huge loss as his impact in the first half was massive. However, knowing that there were no subs everyone stepped up and played like never before, Sandon finishing the match The third and final match was against William de Ferrers. With two very quick backs this was going to be a hard game. From the start WDF ran in a try that was soon followed by a second. However, with that shock Sandon again raised their game and were defensively brilliant. The backs drifting across keeping WDF s fast runners at bay. Sandon then got control of the ball and although it was an extremely physical encounter Sandon were winning and gaining ground. Nathan Dunston off his wing and looking for work charged over the line to start the fight back. He was soon followed by Monty Payne to level the score. WDF were now going backwards with every tackle and pass. Sam Gowen applied great pressure on the opposition s try line tackling the player and dislodging the ball allowing James Day, who was arriving in support, to drive on the ball and score. Now the forward pressure was building, holes opened up and Joe Dawe scored his first of four tries as well as one for Harry Parker. An interception allowed WDF to grab a late try but Sandon were clear winners Congratulations Year 8 Tournament Winners for a second time this year and an even better performance. Well done and thank you to all the parents for their support.
