Midland (19-16) at Corpus Christi (19-16) Sunday, May 13, 2018 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 2:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 11-6 Home 8-10 Road 5-2-2 Series 1-1 Sweeps W 1 Streak 2-3 Last 5 4-6 Last 10 7-RUN FIRST FUELS CC: Carmen Benedetti went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs while Ryan Hartman blanked Midland over the final four frames Saturday night, as the Hooks rolled to a 9-3 triumph at Whataburger Field. The Hooks did most of their damage in the first inning, sending 11 men to the plate against Corey Walter. With the bases full and no outs, Benedetti sent a tworun double into right. Randy Cesar was next and made it 3-0 with an RBI single into right. Following a hit batsman, Nick Tanielu cracked a grounder through the right side, chasing home Benedetti. Cesar scored the fifth run on a passed ball and Tanielu made 6-0, scampering home on a double play. Myles Straw, who singled to start the frame, capped the barrage with an RBI infield hit. Hooks starter Brock Dykxhoorn responded by retiring the first nine men he faced. Midland got to Dykxhoorn in the fourth, scoring twice on a free pass and a pair of doubles. Richie Martin homered in the fifth. Dykxhoorn exited the game four batters later with two on and two out. After walking the first man, Hartman stranded the bases loaded by inducing a fly ball. Alex De Goti restored the Hooks to a five-run advantage by sending a base hit into left field, scoring Tanielu from first base. Benedetti s second double came in the sixth and plated Josh Rojas for a 9-3 bulge. Hartman dispatched 13 of the final 16 hitters he faced to earn the victory. PAGE 2 SERIES STALWARTS: OF Carmen Benedetti, OF Josh Rojas, and IF Nick Tanielu each recorded 3 knocks last night, pacing the Hooks 13-hit attack. Benedetti, 6-for-13 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs in the series, is batting.389 with a 1.032 OPS in 9 games vs. Midland. Rojas has 6 hits in 14 at-bats over the last 3 games, scoring 5 runs while driving in another 4. In 6 assignments vs. Midland, he is hitting.458 with a 1.310 OPS. Tanielu, making his 3rd consecutive start this afternoon, is 6-for-8 with 4 runs to open the homestand. SPEEDY STRAW: OF Myles Straw led a double steal in the first inning last night, giving him at least 1 stolen base in each of the last 5 games. Straw, who leads Minor League Baseball with 21 thefts, is now 8-for-15 with 4 runs scored and 4 steals in the first 3 games of this series. The 23-year-old is on pace to rack up 84 steals this year, which would shatter Corpus Christi s single-season standard of 54, achieved by Delino DeShields, Jr. in 2014. Corpus Christi has recorded a Minor League best 53 stolen bases this year. BULLISH BATS: Corpus Christi matched it s largest output in a single frame by scoring 7 times in the first inning last night. The Hooks have scored 8 runs or more in 12 of 35 (34%) contests this season. The club enters play with the most runs (200), best batting average (.288) and on-base percentage (.366) in the Texas League. BACK & FORTH: The Hooks, who shoot for the series victory this afternoon, have on 6 of the 11 meetings with the Rock- Hounds this year. The season series has been hotly contested with Corpus Christi outscoring Midland 59-51. Both clubs are fighting to catch up to the first-place San Antonio Missions (25-10), who have won 11 in a row. The RockHounds (19-16) and Hooks (19-16) trail the Missions by 6.0 games. Last year, Midland and Corpus Christi tied for 2nd place in the Texas League South standings at 67-71. The RockHounds, by virtue of winning 17 of the 30 meetings with the Hooks, advanced to the postseason, and ultimately claimed their 4th consecutive Texas League title. The final 2 contests between Corpus Christi and Midland were cancelled due to Hurricane Harvey. MUCH MORE DEMOCRATIC: RHP Brock Dykxhoorn and LHP Ryan Hartman used their defense last night, coaxing 9 groundouts and 6 flyouts against a mere 7 strikeouts. Hooks hurlers racked up 31 Ks over the first 2 games in the series. Corpus Christi pitchers punched out a season-high 16 Thursday night. The pitching staff is breezing 9.4 batters per game, and currently rank 2nd in the Texas League with 330 strikeouts. San Antonio leads the pack at 355. LHP Framber Valdez struck out 9 RockHounds in 5.0 frames Friday night, matching Josh James for most Ks by a Corpus Christi pitcher in a single outing. Valdez is tied for 5th in the Texas League with 38 strikeouts.
