LAST GAME Georgetown defeated the Jacksonville Dolphins this past Sunday, 73-57. The team was led by their junior frontcourt of Jessie Govan and Marcus Derrickson. Govan posted a double-double with 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and four blocks while Derrickson also posted 20 points along with eight rebounds. Jagan Mosely recorded nine points and three assists in his sophomore debut while Jonathan Mulmore began his senior campaign by scoring five points and dishing out seven assists. Georgetown went into halftime with a 36-20 lead. The Dolphins looked to come out aggressive in the second half and erase their 16-point deficit, but a 15-4 run sparked by Govan and Derrickson countered back. Georgetown s largest lead (24) came late in the second half and the Blue & Gray shot 45.6 percent from the field for the game. DE-FENSE Georgetown held Jacksonville to 32.7% from the field (18-55 FGA) overall. In the first half, Jacksonville shot 23.3% from the field (7-30 FGA). WATCH FOR JESSIE Jessie Govan is one of 20 NCAA Division I centers on the watch list for the 2018 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced on October 20. Named after Hall of Famer, three-time NCAA champion, six-time NBA champion and six-nba MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the yearly award recognizes the top center in Division I men s college basketball. A national committee consisting of top college basketball personnel selected the 20 preseason candidates. The Abdul-Jabbar Award Committee will narrow down its candidates to 10 by mid-february, with the five finalists announced in March. The winner of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award will be crowned at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show on Friday, April 6 in Los Angeles, Calif. FRESHMAN FUNDAMENTALS Georgetown s four freshmen (Blair, Pickett, Sodom, Walker) participated in the BIG EAST s Freshman Fundamentals program in September. It was a two day forum featuring interactive panel discussions and a visit to Madison Square Garden and the 9/11 Memorial. The program is designed to assist men s basketball student-athletes in their transition from high school to the elite level of BIG EAST basketball. IN THE NBA When the National Basketball Association season started, several former Georgetown men s basketball players were on rosters for the season. Former Hoya All-American Otto Porter Jr., who was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year in 2013 and was the No. 3 pick of the Washington Wizards in that year s NBA Draft, began his fifth season as a professional in DC. Another former All-American, Greg Monroe, began his third season with the Milwaukee Bucks and just recently got traded to Phoenix. He started his career with the Detroit Pistons. Former BIG EAST Player of the Year and All-American Jeff Green currently plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Green was originally drafted by the Boston Celtics and played in Seattle before the team moved to Oklahoma City, where he played with the Thunder through 2011. Ewing comes back to Georgetown after serving for 15 years as an assistant head coach in the NBA. He served as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards (2002-03), Houston Rockets (2003-06) and Orlando Magic (2007-12) and most recently as the associate head coach for the Charlotte Hornets. Ewing is recognized as the greatest men s basketball player to ever don the Blue & Gray. He was selected as one of the top 50 players in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. Ewing was a three-time consensus First Team All-America selection (1983, 1984, 1985) on the Hilltop, leading the Hoyas to three NCAA Championship Game appearances and the 1984 National Championship title. He was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1984 NCAA Championships. His play propelled Georgetown into one of the most respected basketball programs in the country. During his illustrious career, Ewing had the opportunity to play for, and coach, alongside some of the great coaches in basketball, including Pat Riley (New York Knicks), Jeff Van Gundy (Knicks, Houston Rockets), Stan Van Gundy (Orlando Magic), Tom Thibodeau (Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves) and Steve Clifford (Charlotte). He was the first pick in the 1985 NBA Draft and went on to earn NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 1986 with the New York Knicks after averaging 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Ewing scored 24,815 points during his 17-year NBA career to go along with 11,607 rebounds. Ewing spent 15 years with the Knicks and made 10-consecutive NBA All-Star appearances. Ewing averaged 21.0 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.45 blocks in 1,183 career games and was a member of the NBA s 50th Anniversary Team.
