Letter from the President Dear Prospective Sponsor, The American Society of Civil Engineers at University of California, Los Angeles Student Chapter (ASCE at UCLA) is one of the strongest, largest, and most active student groups on campus at UCLA. Our chapter has over 300 members who are extremely passionate about our organization. We have seen significant membership growth over the past few years, with a 33% rise since 2015. For the past two years, our chapter has been recognized as the Engineering Society of UCLA s Best Large Chapter. We host a variety of professional development, mentorship, and social events, as well as participate in and lead community service outreach events in both local and widespread communities. However, ASCE's main draw for students is its challenging and competitive engineering projects. We just wrapped up a historic year for our student chapter, receiving both regional and national recognitions for our projects and chapter. At the Pacific Southwest Regional Conference (PSWC) held at University of California, Irvine, in early April, we placed 2 nd out of 18 schools. This result was the third consecutive year that we placed top 2 overall, reflecting the hard work of our project managers, directors, and members. Our Surveying team placed 1st, Concrete Canoe placed 2nd, and Concrete Sports and Steel Bridge placed 4 th at PSWC. In addition, our GeoWall and Seismic Design teams both placed 13 th at their respective national competitions. Our project leaders will look to build upon these incredible accomplishments during the upcoming year. Your gracious support will allow ASCE at UCLA to maintain and improve upon the level of excellence that has been established in previous years. Your tax-deductible donation allows us to purchase necessary materials and subsidize events. As a sponsor, you will receive exclusive access to some of the top young engineering students at one of the premier universities in the world. In addition, you will experience many other tangible benefits such as networking nights, recognition on our website, and other perks detailed at the end of this proposal. These events offer a great opportunity to recruit; I hope you decide to take advantage of this opportunity. On behalf of ASCE at UCLA, I want to thank you for taking the time to consider our proposal. Additionally, I would like to thank our sponsors in advance for providing the funding necessary to sustain the competitiveness of our projects and volume of programming to continuously develop engineering students on both a professional and social level. We are very excited to work with you this upcoming year, and hope that you feel the same way. Please feel free to contact me or any of our project managers with questions. All the best, Allison Woodworth, President ASCE at UCLA, 2017-2018 allisonwoodworth1@gmail.com 1

Letter from the Project Managers Dear Potential Sponsor, Thank you for taking the time to read through our proposal. We are excited to inform you of the vast benefits enjoyed by sponsors of the UCLA Concrete Canoe team! First, by partnering with UCLA Concrete Canoe, your organization gains incredible exposure to UCLA Engineering, other top engineering schools, the UCLA Community, and organizations and companies in the industry across the nation. Your organization's name and logo will be widely exhibited: the UCLA ASCE Chapter website (www.ascebruins.org), the UCLA Concrete Canoe website (www.bruinsconcretecanoe.org), quarterly ASCE newsletters, on the back of the t-shirts proudly sported by our team at competitions, and more. Your company could also receive a 10% discount on registration for one of two UCLA Civil Engineering career fairs held in the 2017-18 academic year. Ultimately, your company will have the opportunity to establish strong relationships with some of the most innovative, talented students of UCLA Engineering, as well as with other industry representatives. All donations are tax-deductible. Furthermore, every dollar, ounce of material, word of wisdom, or minute of your time is essential to our success. This past year, we placed second at Pacific Southwest Conference, one of the most competitive regional concrete canoe competitions in the nation. This effort was spearheaded by a group of resourceful and dedicated leaders, most of whom will return as part of the leadership team with their expertise in the upcoming year. With the impeccable transfer of knowledge from last year to this year s leadership, we have an exciting, competitive year ahead of us. In the upcoming year, our team has goals of returning to compete on the national stage and emerging with another top five national finish. Without the help of companies, organizations, and individuals like yourself, we would not be able to concretely achieve our rigorous goals. We are grateful to each and every one of our generous sponsors that help us along the way, and we look forward to potentially working with you in the upcoming year. As always, please contact either of us with any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this sponsorship proposal and any unaddressed topics of interest. Sincerely, Ada Chang Yash Kansal Project Manager, 2017-18 Assistant Project Manager, 2017-18 adachangel@gmail.com yashkansal97@ucla.edu 2

Project History & Description History of Concrete Canoe & UCLA s Early Involvement Since the 19th century, concrete watercrafts have been designed, built, and utilized, although the first recognized concrete canoe competition occurred in the 1970s as a challenge between rivals. What started off as healthy rivalry between the civil engineering departments of two universities has evolved over time into a multi-faceted national competition notoriously known to challenge contending teams with one task: to engineer, according to standards, a concrete canoe that can float. Every year, teams incorporate innovation, sustainability, and efficiency into their design, construction, and management processes. Teams are judged on, and receive points for, four equally-weighted categories in both the regional and national competitions: final product, oral presentation, design paper, and races. Upon a top finish at the regional competition, teams are invited to the national competition, where they compete against other top teams from regions across nation in an attempt to emerge as the concrete canoe national champions. UCLA Concrete Canoe first took up the challenge in 1990 with P.D.S. 90, an acronym for Please Don t Sink. Indeed, this concrete canoe did not sink, and the UCLA Concrete Canoe team has since floated towards national recognition. Since 1990, UCLA Concrete Canoe has competed at the national level seven times. In the past three years, the team has consistently placed in the top two at the regional competitions and has competed at ASCE S annual National Concrete Canoe Competition twice, with top five finishes each time. Design Report The design report contains information about the design of the concrete canoe, ranging from its concrete mix properties to its hull shape and aesthetic features. Moreover, it details the analyses performed and the innovations implemented by the team. The resulting document compiles the conception of the concrete canoe, the schedule followed to complete the project, the management style employed to ensure proper communication, and the quality control methods utilized by the team. 3

Project History & Description Oral Presentation In this part of the competition, project leadership introduces the canoe and its fabrication process. These presentations feature any extraordinary accomplishments made in the project s yearlong journey. Teams have the opportunity to speak to any unique innovations in their construction, analysis, and testing. Final Product During the competition, final product display gives students the opportunity to look at other teams canoes and displays, while judges do the same. The canoe rests on stands for display; beside it, a display table shows all the raw concrete mix materials and reinforcements that comprise the canoe, and a cutaway section of the canoe shows the construction process and configuration of concrete and reinforcement layers. These displays allow teams to learn innovative and sustainable methods from each other. This past year, UCLA Concrete Canoe s theme was Alice in Wonderland. Hence, the display table channeled a tea party setup, and the stands resembled mushrooms from the forest. Races During the arguably most exciting day of the competition, paddlers finally race the concrete canoe, which the team has already proudly presented to judges in the design paper, final product display, and oral presentation, against other canoes in a test of functionality. Each canoe must first pass a timed swamp test wherein it is completely submerged in water and must break the surface of the water with its buoyancy. Race points are awarded based on the performance in the races. The first races are men s and women s endurance races, which are a series of time trials. Next comes men s and women s sprints, which feature one 180-degree turn each. The last races are the co-ed sprints, which are worth the most points and feature three 180-degree turns. After these preliminary races, the top ten teams for each sprint race participate in the final races. 4

Projected Budget & How to Get Involved Projected Budget For 2017-2018, the breakdown of the projected budget is summarized in the table to the right. Costs for several aspects of the project, including mold construction and final display, will be minimized through the rehabilitation of the previous year s concrete canoe mold, pre-tensioning apparatus system, and general construction supplies to ultimately promote cost efficiency and environmental friendliness. Still, costly purchases for other aspects of the project must be made for the project to reach completion and to improve upon past performance. Every year, we have expenses for a multitude of project materials, such as wood, screws, tape, sandpaper, expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, paint, epoxy, concrete mix materials, and more. This year, in addition to purchasing more mix materials for increased testing and accuracy in our concrete strength results, we plan to obtain new paddles, kneepads for paddlers, and full-face cartridge respirators. All these purchases will support the prosperity of the project and the students involved. For more detailed budgetary or project schedule information, please contact the project managers at bruins.concretecanoe@gmail.com or at their personal emails, listed on page 2. 2017-2018 PROJECTED BUDGET SUMMARY Mix Materials & Testing $1,080.00 Mold Construction $204.00 Canoe Construction $172.00 Recruitment $595.00 Safety Supplies $620.00 Paddling $1,140.00 Final Display $510.00 Transportation & Lodging $3,010.00 Safety Supplies 8% Final Display 7% Mold Construction 3% TOTAL $7,331.00 2018 BUDGET BREAKDOWN Canoe Construction 2% Mix Materials & Testing 15% Paddling 16% Transportation & Lodging 41% Recruitment 8% How To Get Involved Given the multidisciplinary nature of the Concrete Canoe project, there are many ways to become involved. If you would like to provide monetary support for the project, sponsorship packages and information lie in the following pages, and the Projected Budget for the 2017-18 academic year lies above for your review. We re grateful for any and all donations that we receive! Workshops or information on the topics of AutoCAD, scheduling, concrete mix design, and prestressed concrete would also help us succeed.
