3 HISTORY OF GNCTR The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race, also known as GNCTR, is the longest running national engineering competition in Canada. The first race took place in Red Deer, Alberta in 1975 and was co-hosted by the University of Alberta and University of Calgary. Every year since, the competition has been held in a different city in Canada, typically switching between East and West universities. GNCTR brings together over 450 engineering students from various disciplines and institutions across Canada. Students are tasked with building a toboggan equipped with a complete concrete running surface that weighs a maximum of 300 lbs. and can safely carry 5 passengers. Reaching speeds of over 60 km/h, toboggans must have fully functional braking and steering systems. Teams are judged in multiple categories ranging from technical design to team spirit. 4 CITY OF EDMONTON The race will be held in Edmonton, Alberta from January 30th to February 3rd, Edmonton is home to the University of Alberta, a founding member of GNCTR. Since the competition s inception, the U of A has and continues to play a central role in the race s success and development; most recently winning the GNCTR 2014 competition and hosting GNCTR As Alberta s capital city, Edmonton affords students a variety of professional opportunities which span a wide range of construction and engineering activity, including the Stantec Tower; soon to be Western Canada s tallest tower. Two members of the Organizing Committee have even been lucky enough to be a part of this iconic downtown project! ORGANIZING COMMITTEE The 2019 GNCTR Organizing committee is comprised of University of Alberta Alumni that have all previously competed in this event. Together there is over 20 years of competitor experience. Professionally, committee members have experience in concrete construction, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and more. GNCTR played a central role in developing the skills and relationships that influenced and helped guide committee members into rewarding careers; something that will continue to impact them for the rest of their lives. 4
