Existing Conditions History of angle crashes Crashes resulting in fatalities Flagler County and residents requesting safety improvements Proposed Roundabout Improves safety Maintains traffic flow on U.S. 1 Provides better operation and safety performance 8
What is a Modern Roundabout? Accommodates vehicles of all sizes (including trucks and buses) Yields to circulating traffic at entry Raised center island controls traffic flow Reduces speed There is no parking within the circular intersection 9
Traffic Operations at the Roundabout Year 2040 10
Benefits of a Roundabout: Reduction in severe angle crashes 90% reduction in fatalities 68% reduction in injuries Slower speed allows increased reaction time Reduces delay and improves traffic flow Cost efficient no additional right of way will be required 11
Vehicle Conflict Point Comparison Safety Benefits Traffic Signal 32 conflict points 16 crossing points Roundabout 8 conflict points No crossing points 12
How do Bicyclists use a Roundabout? Proceed as a motorist by continuing with traffic through the roundabout. When bicyclists continue with traffic, the same laws apply to them that apply to motor vehicles; yielding to currently circulating traffic. 13
