FISH BITES The Marlins open a brief three-game homestand against the Mets toinght at 7:10 p.m. Miami, trying to break out of a skid that has seen the club go 3-17 since August 28, will send right-hander Dan Straily (9-9, 4.24) to the mound tonight. Straily is 0-1, 4.02 in three career starts against the Mets, but 0-0 with a 1.74 ERA in two starts this season, both at Marlins Park. The Metropolitans will counter with right-hander Matt Harvey (5-5, 6.14), who is 2-3, 3.56 in 10 career starts against the Fish. The Marlins are coming off an extended 10-game road trip on which they went 2-8 against the Braves (1-3), Phillies (0-3), and Brewers (1-2). The Brewers series was originally scheduled to open this homestand, but was moved to Milwaukee due to Hurricane Irma. Following this series, Miami has an off-day on Thursday and heads out for its final road trip of the season, stopping in Arizona (Sept. 22-24) and Colorado (Sept. 25-27), before returning home to close out the 2017 season with a four-game set against the Braves (Sept. 28-Oct. 1). YESTERDAY AT MILWAUKEE The Marlins lost the rubber match of a three-game set against Milwaukee at Miller Park, 10-3. The Brewers opened the scoring with an eight-run fourth inning. Miami, playing as the home team, responded with three in its half of the frame. The rally came on four consecutive hits by Marcell (double), Justin (single), Derek (RBI single), and Ichiro (two-run double). VS. THE METS The Fish are 9-7 vs. the Mets this season, 4-3 at home. All-time, Miami is 196-215 vs. the Mets, 101-102 as the home team, which includes a 2-1 record at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Puerto Rico in 2010 and a 27-27 mark at Marlins Park. The Marlins have not had a winning season vs. the Mets since 2013 (11-8). STRONG FIRST IMPRESSION Dan Straily is making his 31st start of the season tonight. In his last start, on September 13 at Philadelphia, he struck out five batters, bringing his season total to 150 strikeouts. According to Stats LLC, he is just the fifth pitcher in Club history to reach 30 starts and 150 strikeouts in his first season with the team. The others were Javier Vazquez in 2011 (32/162), Alex Fernandez in 1997 (32/183), Kevin Brown in 1996 (32/159), and Al Leiter in 1996 (33/200). Straily is just 12 strikeouts shy of tying his career high of 162, set last season with Cincinnati. HOT STREAKS This series features the two hottest hitters in the National League over the last three-plus weeks. Since August 25, Asdrubal Cabrera leads the Senior Circuit with a.417 (30x72) batting average, while Dee ranks second in that time at.383 (36x94). ALL OR NOTHING The Marlins have hit 175 home runs on the season, fourth-most in team history (208 HR in 2008, 201 in 2007, 182 in 2006), and are 62-43 when hitting at least one home run, including Saturday night's win at Milwaukee. When the club does not homer, the team has gone just 7-37. The Marlins are 10th in the NL in home runs on the season, but have hit just 11 home runs thus far in September, the fewest in the Majors. According to Stats LLC, the.431 difference between Miami's winning percentage when homering (.590) and not homering (.159) is the fifth-largest in the Majors this season, behind Colorado (.509 -.713 with/.204 without), the Yankees (.473 -.655/.182), the Dodgers (.471 -.771/.300), and Detroit (.453 -.559/.106). This is the second-largest difference in club history for Miami, trailing only a.447 gap in 2004. MIAMI 5-0 Dee has 54 stolen bases, second in the Majors behind Billy Hamilton (58). has reached 50 stolen bases for the second time with the Marlins, the third in his career, joining Luis Castillo (1999-2000), Juan Pierre (2003, 2005) & Hanley Ramirez (2006-07) as the only Marlins with multiple 50-stolen bases seasons. The 54 stolen bases are 7th-most in a season in franchise history. With reaching 50 stolen bases, along with Giancarlo at 54 home runs, it is just the third time in MLB history, according to Elias, that a team had one player reach 50 home runs, with another reaching 50 stolen bases. The 1995 Indians had Albert Belle (50 HR) and Kenny Lofton (54 SB), and the 2000 Cubs had Sammy Sosa (50 HR) and Eric Young (54 SB). GLOVE LOVE The Marlins currently owns a.988 fielding percentage, tops in the Majors, committing just 65 errors, fewest in the Majors, in 5,471 total chances. The.988 fielding percentage would be a new single-season best for Miami, as the team s current best mark is.987, done twice: 2003, 2015. The Marlins record for fewest errors in a season is 77, in 2015. The Fish have committed just four errors in their past 18 games, with two coming in one game. 54 Giancarlo has hit 54 home runs, the most homers in the Majors since José Bautista hit 54 in 2010. s 54 homers are the most in the NL since Ryan Howard hit 58 in 2006, which also was the last time a MLB player hit more than 54 home runs. GAME BREAK Of Giancarlo s 54 home runs, 26 have given the Marlins the lead. The 26 go-ahead home runs extend his Major League lead and his Marlins single-season record (Sheffield 2nd with 17 in 1996) and are tied with Jim Rice (1978) for the second-most in MLB since at least 1974. The most go-ahead homers in the last 44 seasons was 30, by Mark McGwire in 1998. DAN STRAILY HT 6'1" WT 220 BATS RIGHT THROWS RIGHT MLB DEBUT AUGUST 3, 2012 VS. TORONTO (W/OAK) BIRTHPLACE REDLANDS, CA BORN DECEMBER 1, 1988 OPENING DAY AGE 28 CONTRACT STATUS SIGNED THROUGH 2017 ACQUIRED FROM CINCINNATI IN A FOUR-PLAYER TRADE ON JANUARY 19, 2017 Straily gets the call for Miami tonight in the opener of this brief three-game homestand against the New York Mets. This is just his third start of the season against the Mets, the previous two also coming here at Marlins Park (April 16, June 27). Has combined for a 1.74 ERA (10.1 ip/2 er) in those outings, with a.139 (5x36) average against, but has issued six walks against nine strikeouts. On the road, he is 5-6, 5.19 in 15 starts this season, compared to 4-3, 3.27 in 15 home starts. The Fish have won three of his last five starts, after losing in his first seven starts of the second half. Over his final five starts of the first half, he was 3-0, 1.99 (31.2/7), and the team went 5-0 (team was 8-2 over his final 10 starts of first half). In his start on July 19 vs. Philadelphia, he issued three walks. Snapped a streak of nine consecutive starts with one or zero walks, which tied Justin Nicolino (2016) for the second-longest such streak within one season in Club history, trailing Ricky Nolasco, who did so in his final 12 starts of 2008 (overall streak reached 13). In his start on June 16 at Atlanta, he struck out eight without walking a batter. He is the only Marlins pitcher to accomplish that feat this season, doing it twice (also, April 22 at San Diego). He is also the first Marlins pitcher to have eight-plus strikeouts and no walks more than once in a season since José Fernández did it four times last year. Only five pitchers (six times) have done it three-or-more times in a season: Anibal Sanchez (4 in 2011), Fernández (4 in 2016; 3 in 2014), Kevin Brown (4 in 1996), Javier Vazquez (3 in 2011), and Ricky Nolasco (3 in 2008). In his start on May 31 vs. Philadelphia, tossed 113 pitches over 6.2 innings, 81 of which were strikes. It was the highest strike count of his career, and his best strike percentage (71.7) in his 25 career games with 100-plus pitches. Was forced to leave start vs. Houston on May 15 for precautionary reasons after being struck on the right forearm by a line drive off the bat of Evan Gattis leading off the fifth inning. Remained in the game to retire the side and dropped down a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the frame before departing. Took loss in first start of season, April 5 at Washington, surrendering five runs on six hits (one home run) and two walks over 3.1 innings. The 3.1 innings tied secondshortest start of career (third time), behind a 2.2-inning affair on August 29, 2016 at Angels. Earned first win with Miami in Opening Night start at Marlins Park on April 11 against Atlanta. Allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits (one home run) and two walks with five strikeouts over 5.0 innings. On April 16 vs. Mets, didn t allow a hit over 5.1-inning outing, marking longest no-hit appearance of career.
