2 Audition Requirements In order to be eligible for auditions, dancers must: register and attend Summer Intensive (July 16-20) register online for Company Auditions (July 21) The following dates are mandatory for all dancers auditioning for Company: Summer Intensive July 16-20 Register at rootsacademy.net/summerintensive Auditions Saturday, July 21 Register at rootsacademy.net/company rising 2nd-5th grade 9:00-10:00 am rising 6th-8th grade 10:00-11:00 am rising 9th-12th grade 11:00-12:00 pm The following dates are mandatory for all dancers selected after auditions: Parent Meetings Sunday, July 29 Schedule TBA (reserve all day) Boot Camp & Choreography July 30 - Aug 4 Schedule TBA (reserve all week) Audition Dress Code Summer Intensive Regular dance apparel can be worn during the intensive, any color. Dancers must look professional with hair pulled up and out of face. Auditions All black is required for auditions. Attire must be form fitting for clean lines and visibility. Hair must be pulled up neatly. Dancers need to wear the appropriate shoes. Audition Results Audition results for Performance and Company teams will be emailed out 1-2 days after auditions. Solo and trio selections will also be emailed out at that time. Attendance at the parent meeting will serve as an official acceptance of your position.

3 Competition Company General Information Competition & Performance Companies ROOTS Competition Companies are for dancers (2nd-12th) who desire a challenging and competitive team experience. These members are the most driven and talented dancers at ROOTS and are passionate, hard-working, and committed. Company members are expected to maintain a positive image through their behavior and attitude both inside and outside of the studio, and are expected to fully commit their time and energy to dance at ROOTS. Competition Company members will compete at 3-4 dance competitions during the season, attend 1-2 dance conventions, perform at certain events around the community, and rehearse weekly. Competition Company members are required to take a set amount of hours during the week. ROOTS Competition is highly selective. Companies are leveled ultimately by skill level and overall technique. Age is considered. ESTIMATED Weekly Time Commitment = 8+ hours per week Performance Company ROOTS Performance Companies are for dancers (2nd-12th) who desire more performance opportunities and growth within a close-knit community of dancers. These dancers are passionate, hard-working, and ready to learn. Company members are expected to maintain a positive image through their behavior and attitude both inside and outside of the studio, and are expected to fully commit their time and energy to dance at ROOTS. Performance Company members will attend 1-2 dance conventions, perform at events around the community, and rehearse weekly. Performance Company members are required to a set amount of hours during the week. ROOTS Performance companies are leveled by both age and ability. ESTIMATED Weekly Time Commitment = 4 hours per week

4 Skills List Performance Companies In preparation for auditions, dancers can work on the following technical objectives*: Mini (avg. age = 8 and under) Right and left splits Right and left leaps Single pirouette Leg extensions Chaine, soutenu turns Junior (avg. age = 9-11) Sissone jump Bird jump Double stag jump Double Pirouette Leap in seconde Teen (avg. age = 12-14) Calypso Double pirouettes (passe, pencil, coupe, turned out passe, etc) Senior (avg. age = 15-18) A la seconde turns (4 into a double) *These skills are recommended for the age, but not required. Performance member selection will be based on overall technique, attitude, and age. These skills will also be covered in their Company classes.

5 Skills List Competition Companies In preparation for auditions, dancers can work on the following technical objectives*: Mini (avg. age = 8 and under) Flat left & right splits Middle split Right & left leg extensions (grabbing with both hands with a straight back) Battement kicks (forced arch and releve) Right & left leaps Chaine & soutenu turns Sissone/Firebird Bird Jump Double stag jump Ability to learn and retain choreography quickly Ability to take correction and work hard toward a goal Complex movement in the styles of jazz, lyrical, contemporary and hip hop Junior (avg. age = 9-11) Turning leaps (calypso, turning bird jump, turning double stag, etc.) Leap in seconde Double pirouette Teen (avg. age = 12-14) Triple pirouette A la seconde turns Fouette sequences Swivel / switch sissone Changing spot turns and reverse turns Senior (avg. age = 15-18) Complex turn combinations Quad pirouette Specialty skills (not required) we like to see: Back Extensions, Leg Spins Unique Leaps & Tricks Aerials, Tumbling *These skills are recommended for the age, but not required. Competition member selection will be based on overall technique, attitude, and age.

6 Solos & Trios Optional Opportunities Selected Company dancers (Competition and/or Performance) will have the opportunity to compete/perform a solo or trio. Solo and trio dancers will be selected at auditions and throughout the dance season. Not all Company dancers will be offered a solo or trio. If you are interested in a solo or trio, please note interest on your audition application. Solos and trios are encouraged to compete at additional competitions/conventions throughout the season. Solos & Trios require a one-time Choreography Fee, one-time Costume Fee, and weekly rehearsal fees (varies depending on choreographer/teacher). Rehearsal Fee varies per instructor varies per instructor Parties & Events There will be planned events hosted at ROOTS for Company dancers as a reward for their hard work, dedication, and time commitment. Previous events have included: Bowling, Pool Party, Photo Shoots, Christmas Banquet, Lock-Ins, Family Reveal, and more. Events will be announced with enough time to plan, and parents will be called upon to chaperone and/or assist with planning. Class Assistants ROOTS Company members are eligible to become a Teacher Assistant for lower level classes. If you are interested, please contact the Dance Office. Additional Conventions/Competitions Throughout the season, ROOTS will offer optional convention opportunities to Company dancers. These additional conventions will be encouraged, but not required. Lockers in Dancer Lounge ROOTS offers priority locker rental to Company members in the Dancer Lounge.

7 Performances Required Opportunities At ROOTS Academy, performance is a core value. Recital Participation (ALL shows) is required for all company members. In addition, Companies have performed at events such as: Mix 92.9 Kids Day (October) Franklin Main Street Festival (April) Gaylord Opryland s A Country Christmas (December) Kids Arts Festival (June) American Girl Nanea Doll Launch (August) Hungry for Hope Conference Franklin Christmas Parade (December) As performance opportunities arise, we will do our best to notify families in a timely matter. We encourage our Company families to be flexible, as performance opportunities can sometimes occur at the last minute. Conventions & Competitions Exact Competitions and Convention dates will be communicated closer to audition dates. Companies will attend local competitions AND travel to competitions for the 2018-2019 dance season. In the past, Companies have attended competitions & conventions such as: Dance Makers Convention & Competition - Nashville - Fall Excel in Motion Convention & Competition - Murfreesboro - Spring Nexstar Competition - Murfreesboro - Spring Starpower Competition - Murfreesboro - Spring Applause Competition - Murfreesboro - Spring Recital Opening Number & Finale ALL Company members are required to learn and perform Opening Number at ALL ROOTS Dance Recital shows. Company members may also be required to learn and perform Finale Number at ALL ROOTS Dance Recital shows. Company members may NOT opt out of either routine. (Opening Number & Final may require additional costume fees.)

8 Code of Conduct Dancer Behavior Policies Company Members are the leaders and role models of ROOTS Dance Academy. They represent ROOTS to the highest level in terms of character, discipline, and behavior. They always aim to maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Company members are prompt. Dancers should arrive to classes, performances, and rehearsals EARLY to warm-up, stretch, and review. Company members understand that discipline is a core value of ROOTS Academy. Company members are gracious. They ALWAYS thank their mentors, choreographers, and instructors after class, no matter who it is. Company members are welcoming to subs, guests, and new teachers. They respect whoever is teaching them. Company members look professional at all times with proper dance apparel, shoes, and hair. Company members take advantage of every opportunity for growth and continued dance education, whether that be additional conventions, workshops, or master classes. Company members function with a team mindset. Teammates hold each other accountable, support each other, and treat each other with absolute kindness. Company members will do their best to maintain a positive spirit, leaving all negativity at the door. Company members DO NOT discriminate based on ability, age, gender, color, ethnicity, culture, traditions, or family life. We celebrate all differences. Company members DO NOT gossip. We do not speak ill of mentors, other teachers, the studio, teammates, or other dancers. Negativity and gossip will NOT be tolerated and will be addressed. Parent Expectations We strive to create a culture of trust and honesty. At ROOTS, admin and mentors are striving to create a safe and nurturing environment for dancers to learn and grow. We expect Company parents to model respect for the decisions made by the Director, Managers, Coordinators and Mentors. Volunteer. Company parents are expected to volunteer for recital and other events. Positive Conflict Resolution. When conflict or situations arise that require further direction, we expect parents to request a meeting with the involved party directly. If insufficient resolve continues, we expect the situation to be brought to the admin team where an open and honest conversation will be facilitated in a professional and understanding manner. Social Media Facebook Groups Parents or dancers who create Facebook groups must add a ROOTS Faculty member as an admin for that group. Instagram, Twitter and Other Platforms Dancers are encouraged to associate themselves with ROOTS when posting. If ROOTS is tagged or mentioned on a post, it must portray integrity, professionalism, and a positive image. Dancers will be asked to remove any post that does not reflect ROOTS in a positive light. ROOTS should not be held liable for any repercussions a dancer s post may generate. No social media account or group should be created using the ROOTS name or branding without authorization from the ROOTS Marketing Manager. Group Messages Dancers are expected to reflect positive attitudes inside and outside of the studio. Any negativity, gossip, or ill behavior will be addressed immediately. Dancers understand that anything they send or post is permanent and always has the potential to be shared. Dancers must be cautious at all times with their responses and participation.

9 Estimated Financial Commitment Choreography Fees Each Company will learn their routine(s) from a choreographer. Choreography Fees are paid to ROOTS and will be due around the time of choreography. Each Company routine will require a Choreography Fee. Costume Fees Costume Fees pay for the costume(s) for each routine. Please note that dancers who participate in additional electives and Recital classes will have Costume Fees for those additional Recital routines. Monthly Tuition Monthly tuition is calculated based on the number of hours a dancer is in class each week, including Saturdays. Company members are required to take a set amount of hours per week. Company Participation Fee This fee will cover certain Company events, Opening Number choreography, extra rehearsals, and administrative support. Convention Fees Convention Fees vary depending on location and organization, and will cover the entire weekend of classes for dancers. They do NOT cover travel expenses, food, or lodging. Administrative fees will be added due to staff/faculty costs (registration, facilitation). Competition Entry Fees Competitions require Entry Fees in order to compete. These fees vary depending on location/organization and is required per dancer, per routine. These fees do NOT cover travel expenses, food, or lodging.
